1. Using the worksheets 1 and 2 below, complete the following activity:
• Cut out the different areas of responsibility
• Glue/stick them into the level of government responsible for that area 2. Complete Worksheet 3 (from Hop into Parliament Activity Book) 3. Research one of the levels of Government and write a brochure on its
roles in Australia, include pictures. 4. Each student writes down a law they want to see changed. As a class
determine which level of government would have to be petitioned for each law.
5. Identify the Member for your school’s electorate, and / or students’
residential electorates, for each level of government.

There are three levels of governments in Australia; each has different powers and responsibilities although sometimes these overlap.

FEDERAL FEDERAL FEDERAL FEDERAL The Federal Government is responsible for running the country as a whole, and for matters that concern Australia as a nation rather than as individuals. It was formed in 1901 at Australia’s Federation. Head of Government:

State & Territory Governments are responsible for matters which are best dealt with at that level. Being a territory, the Northern Territory has different powers (more limited) to the States.

The states and territories are divided into city and shire councils who look after the particular needs of their city or local community. Local government members are called councillors. Head of Government: Lord Mayor or Shire President
