    The Fulness of the Time

The way had been prepared. The time was right. But when thefulness of the time was come, Godsent forth his son...to redeem themthat were under the law, that wemight receive the adoption of sons(Galatians 4:4-5).

God prepared the way for thefirst advent or addition of Christ tothe human family even as today theway is being prepared for His sec-ond coming.

Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son,that thy Son also may glorify thee.

    John 17:1

    ...TheFullnessof the

    Time...

Was Israel alert to the time?As a nation, Israel desired the ad-vent of the Messiah, but theirhearts and lives were separatedfrom God. They did not understandthe character or mission of thepromised Deliverer. He would notcome as a conqueror to break theyoke of the Roman power. The Sav-iour would come to deliver thepeople of Israel from the bondage ofsin. Alertness was important asthey studied the prophecies andfollowed the steps necessary inpreparing for the coming One.

Would Israel be alert andprepared to accept the coming De-liverer?

What was wrong? Had theynot been told about the coming ofthe Deliverer?

Yes, they had been told longbefore. In fact, Adam and Eve(1 plus 1 equals 2) were told aboutthe Saviours coming in Eden afterthey had sinned.

    1. I will put enmity between theeand the woman, means I will senda Deliverer.

    2. Between thy seed and her seed, means that there will be a strugglebetween Satans followers and Godsfollowers.

    3. It shall bruise thy head, meansChrist would crush the serpentshead, or overcome Satan.

    4. And thou shalt bruise his heel, means Christ will ever carry themarks of His sacrifice, the bruise.(See Habakkuk 3:4.)

When Adam and Eve (1 plus 1equals 2) first heard the promisethey expected it to be quickly ful-filled. The first baby (Cain) wasborn into the home of Adam andEve (2 plus 1 equals 3). They hopedhe would be the Deliverer. He wasnot! Another child (3 plus 1 equals4) was born to Adam and Eve whomthey named Abel. More and morebabies came to live in the home ofAdam and Eve. None of these ba-bies were the Deliverer!

ZeroBut made himself of no reputation,

and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.

    Philippians 2:7

The word zero has many syn-onyms. Some are: nothing, naught, empty, and cipher.Christ came to this world at thevery crisis, when Satan seemedabout to triumph....* Satan (Luci-fer) in heaven had said, I will exaltmy throne above the stars of God...Iwill be like the Most High (Isaiah14:13-14). But Christ being in theform of God, thought it not robbery,to be equal with God. But madehimself of no reputation [as nothing]and took upon him the form of aservant and was made in the like-ness of men. Because Christ be-came nothing He gives you value, for without Him you are nothing-ness. The soul is of infinite value. Its worth can be estimated only bythe price paid to ransom it. Calvary!Calvary! Calvary! will explain thetrue value of the soul.**

In arithmetic when zero (0)stands by itself, it expresses noth-ing, but increases or diminishes***the value of other figures, accordingto their position. In whole numbers, when placed at the right**** handof a figure, it increases its value tenfold (10), but in decimal fractions, placed at the left**** hand of afigure, it diminishes*** the value ofthat figure ten fold (.01). So it iswith you, as you accept Christssacrifice your value increases manyfold. If you reject the sacrifice youbecome a cipher. Christ is whatgives you value.

We are told: ...Many a onewho otherwise would be but a ci-pher in the world, perhaps only ahelpless burden, will be able to saywith the apostle Paul, I can do allthings through Christ whichstrengtheneth me (Philippians4:13).*****

    John 14:30

Zero means empty or nothing. Inmathematics zero acts as a placeholder, and does not change the valueof the number when added. When thefullness of the time was come, Jesusmade Himself as nothing and tookupon him the form of a servant, andwas made in the likeness of men (Phil-ippians 2:7). He came to witness aboutthe Father. He could not make theFather greater than He already was,but came to reveal how great He was. When Satan came to tempt Christ hefound nothing (no sin) in Him. ...Theprince of this world cometh, and hathnothing in me (John 14:30). With Hispowerful help, self will be completelysubdued and it will become as naughtand will be a witness for Him! Thinkon these thoughts as you do the follow-ing problems.

Remember when a zero is placedto the right of a single digit number, itincreases the value of that numbertenfold. For example, one with a zeroto the right of it equals 10. It can re-mind us of how we only have valuewhen we, who are nothing (0), line upon the right side of the Lord (1).

Witnessing for Christor Selfishly Keeping for Ourselves

And then the family movedaway from our town, and yearspassed before I saw the sweetsinger again. Somehow her hopes tobecome an outstanding artist havenot materialized, though the wayhas been opened for her to studywith teachers who are among thebest in North America. She is dis-appointed, and just a little bitterabout her failure.

I wondercan it be that shehas wrapped her talent in the nap-kin of selfish ambition and buried itdeep beneath selfish pride, so thatit is bringing no satisfaction to her,no blessing to witnessing to othersthrough song?

One of the most popular con-cert artists many years ago droppedinto a little Italian restaurant. Si-gnor! cried the waiter, almost intears, I have saved my tips to hearyou, and the manager, he would notlet me off. I am sad, my friend, sovery sad, because I may not hearyou sing.

You shall hear it now, saidthe famous singer with a smile, andstanding there in that humbleplace, without accompaniment, he

No, I think not. Marieshrugged indifferently as she re-fused the request of her hostess tosing for the several friends who hadchanced to drop in to spend theevening. If I sing here and thereand everywhere, my voice will be-come common and wont be properlyappreciated, she explained.

We sincerely admired hermusical ability and urged her togive us just one song, but she wasfirmwe wouldnt call her stub-born, of courseand her decisionstood.

Her brother used all his per-suasive powers, but in vain. Youreselfish! he finally declared frankly.Just plain selfish!

So we gathered around thepiano and had a community sing, which may not have been much asto technique, but which was goodexercise and good fun. Marie wasaudience. She was saving hervoice for a real occasion.

sang. When he had finished, he hadonly witnessed to the waiter, themanager, two taxi drivers, and anItalian importer.

One who has known him longsays, he has a great gift, and hegives it freely. All through his life,he has spilled song as wastefully asif it were water splashing in thesun. And the fountain, far fromdrying up, has increased in volumeand beauty.

As a four-year-old he sat be-side his mother at the parlor organand discovered that he could sing, and that singing was a joy. As hegrew into boyhood, the family andthe neighbors remarked upon thechilds voice, but there was nomoney for lessons. At twelve hesang a solo at the annual musicfestival at Trinton, New Jersey. Theaudience was blessed by his song.

An opportunity came for himto sing in church one Sabbath, andhe and the organist became fastfriends. She knew the mysteries ofnotes and helped him in the eve-nings. But soon his voice began tochange; he dropped all thought ofsinging and devoted himself togrowing up.

Then came the World Wardays. He was in the air service, andas he learned to fly, his voice came

back. He tested it out, and lo, thesoprano of his boyhood had com-pletely vanished, but in its placethere was a golden tenor!

To his great disappointmenthe was not permitted to go over-seas, and suddenly he found him-self on the ground again and out ofthe service. A job was an imperativenecessity, and he found one in anice plant. But while he worked hesang, and sang, and sang witness-ing to those around him! Also hesaved every cent possible, andwhen he had what he thought wasenough, he went to New York tostudy music.

It was then that he discoveredto his dismay that good voice teach-ers in the big city charge a lot ofmoney for a half-hour lesson, andhis savings were soon gone. But hefound another jobthis time in aninsurance officeand married theorganist who had helped him in thelong ago. Once more she broughtinto his life inspiration and encour-agement.

A large New York church an-nounced an audition for a newtenor soloist, and this man took thetest. He was forty-seventh on thelist, and many followed him, but hegot the placewhich added twenty-five dollars in cash to his weeklyincome.

  • Addition I Student Page 27

Then calls began to come forhis service in many different placessome high, some low. For some hereceived payment, for some he didnot, but he never refused. Finallythe New York Symphony Orchestraoffered him an engagement, and onthe great stage of Carnegie Hall hegave a concert that overwhelmedhis audience. He was just twenty-two!

Several years of study in Eu-rope followed, and before he re-turned home, he was a master tenorand was singing incessantly with orwithout contracts. Taxi drivers andwaiters heard his voice in restau-rants and cafes for nothing. Hospi-tals welcomed him for the concertshe loved to givewithout a cent ofremuneration. He enjoyed witness-ing to others with the gift God hadgiven him.

When he made his debut atthe Metropolitan in New York in1933, he received thirty-seven cur-tain calls, and stopped the perfor-mance for fifty minutes until theapplause could be subdued.

For several years, from amongthe thousands of his fan lettersMr. Crooks picked a special oneevery few weeks. He had never seenNancy Council, but she alwayswrote suggestions and criticismswhich were extraordinarily helpful.

And he always sent a note in reply.

When he went to Berkeley,California, to sing in a concert, hevisited his pen friend, and foundthat she was an invalid, strapped toa board. She could not attend theconcert, for her doctor had forbid-den it. This great singer telephonedto a piano dealer to send a grandpiano to Nancys home at once. Hiswife accompanied him, and he sangfor her his entire program.

The time came for his appear-ance downtown, but when his man-ager at last located him, he did notinterrupt the concert by the bedsideof Nancy Council. Instead he re-turned to the hall and announcedthat Richard Crooks, the greatesttenor in the world, was singing to asick child. When he arrived at last, two hours late, the patient crowdstood up and cheered him.

Are you being generous wit-nessing with the talents God hasgiven you? Or are you wrappingthem in the napkin of selfish ambi-tion and hiding them where theywill be a blessing to no onenoteven yourself? Think it over!

Christ is the Giver of gifts andtalents. He gave all His talentswhen He came to earth and finallygave His life for you! Are you wit-nessing for Him today?

The number one in the Biblereminds us of beginning, and of theDivine unity. Hear [or be alert],O Israel: The Lord our God is oneLord (Deuteronomy 6:4). God desiresunity with His people and unity infamilies. He planned to send His Soninto a family on earth so the family ofearth could learn how to be one withthe family in heaven.

The cause of division and dis-cord in families and in the church isseparation from Christ. To come nearto Christ is to come near to one an-other. The secret of true unity in thechurch and in the family is not diplo-macy, not management, not a superhu-man effort to overcome difficultiesthough there will be much of this todobut union with Christ.

We start with God (One). The first verse in the Bible says, Inthe beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).The Scriptures go on to say: Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and hisrighteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33).

Mans ways and thoughts are opposite of Gods ways and thoughts. Godsays to seek Him and man says take care of number one. Often man is num-ber one, in his own eyes and his great aim seems to be independent of God.Therefore, the first lesson to be learned is our dependence upon God.

And Adam lived a hundred andthirty years, and begat a son in hisown likeness, after his image; and

    called his name Seth.Genesis 5:3

Cain became jealous of Abel, his brother, and slew him. How sadall of heaven must have been, towitness the first death of one ofGods children.

God gave another son to thefirst family. For God, said she, hath appointed me another seedinstead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

And to Seth, to him also therewas born a son; and he called hisname Enos: then began men to callupon the name of the Lord (Genesis4:25-26).

Seth had children, who hadchildren, who had more children. The descendants of Seth had sepa-rated themselves from the wickeddescendants of Cain. They cher-ished the knowledge of Gods will, while the ungodly race of Cain hadno respect for God and His sacredcommandments.* Seth and hisfamily were alert to the promises ofGod. John 17:3

How can you help bring unityto your home? The home is yourfirst school, and it is here that thefoundation should be laid for a lifeof service. Its principles are to betaught not merely in theory. Theyare to shape the whole training.

Very early the lesson of help-fulness should be taught the child. As soon as strength and reasoningpower are sufficiently developed, heshould be given duties to perform inthe home. He should be encouragedin trying to help father and mother, encouraged to deny and to controlhimself, to put others happinessand convenience before his own, towatch for opportunities to cheer andassist brothers and sisters and play-mates, and to show kindness to theaged, the sick, and the unfortunate. The more fully the spirit of trueministry pervades the home, themore fully it will be developed inthe lives of the children. They willlearn to find joy in service and sac-rifice for the good of others....

Above any other agency, ser-vice for Christs sake in the little

things of everyday experience haspower to mold the character and todirect the life into lines of unselfishministry. To awaken this spirit, toencourge and rightly to direct it, isthe parents and teachers work. Nomore important work could be com-mitted to them. The spirit of minis-try is the spirit of heaven, and withevery effort to develop and encour-age it angels will co-operate.

Such an education must bebased upon the word of God. Hereonly are its principles given in theirfullness. The Bible should be madethe foundation of study and ofteaching. The essential knowledgeis a knowledge of God and of Himwhom He has sent.*
