WHAT IS 3MRP?

The 3 Minute Research Presentation (3MRP) is a competition where graduate students present their • Thesis Research,• Dissertation Research,• Capstone Research, or• Creative Projectsand it’s significance to an intelligent, non-specialist live audience inthree minutes with the aid of one stationary slide.

BACKGROUND

Based on the “3-Minute Thesis” (3MT®)• Developed by University of Queensland in 2008

3MT® is a form of research aimed at: • “Developing academic, presentation, and research

communication skills and supports the development ofresearch students’ capacity to effectively explain theirresearch in three minutes in a language appropriate toan intelligent but non-specialist audience.”

NAU’s 3MRP competition will allow students to:• Communicate the significance of their work to a

general audience in a public forum;• Develop skills that increases a language-base suitable

for a wide range of audiences;• Develop and improve presentation and communication

skills.

ELIGIBILITY

• Master’s and Doctoral students in good standing who have madesubstantial progress on research and analysis or creative work related totheir academic program

• Enrolled at time of entry• May compete if they defend and submit their final thesis, dissertation, or

capstone project prior to conclusion of the competition in March 2017• Students must not have graduated prior to March 1, 2017• Presentations must be based on research directly related to the student’s

thesis, dissertation, creative work, or current research capstone project.• Research related to past employment should not be presented

• Substantial analysis and work must be completed prior to participating in3MRP preliminary heats.

• “Proposed” or future research or creative work with out substantial workor progress will not be allowed

• Participants from previous competitions are eligible to compete.• Winners from past competitions are not eligible

• All competitors will be required to:• Attend TWO training sessions and AT LEAST ONE practice session• Agree to be videotaped and to media exposure for their presentation and

research.

RULES

• A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted • No slide transitions, animations or “movement” of any description; the slide is to be

presented from the beginning of the oration.

• Limited electronic media (e.g., audio and video files) are permitted if directly relevant to the project and presentation.

• No additional props (e.g., costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.

• Data presented in the competitions should be considered as information likely to enter the public domain.

• Presentations are limited to three minutes, and competitors exceeding three minutes will be disqualified.

• Presentations are to be spoken word (no poems, raps, songs).• Presentations are considered to have commenced when a

presenter starts the presentation through movement, speech, or electronic media.

• The decision of the judges is final.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

• DUE: 11:59 PM on Friday, December 16, 2016

• Application Guidelines:• 500 words or less describing the research, creative work, or

capstone project and its significance• Narrative should be written for a general academic audience of non-

specialists, and prepared by the student.• Applications that do not strictly adhere to the word count limitations

and electronic submission instructions described in the Call forAbstracts will not be reviewed.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

• Communication Style• Was the topic and its significance communicated in

language appropriate for an intelligent, but non-specialist, audience?

• Comprehension• Did the presentation enable the audience to clearly

understand the research and/or more complicatedconcepts?

• Engagement• Did the presentation create an excitement in the

audience and make them want to know more about yourresearch?
