The concert performances, recess activities on costumes, craftwork and games from the different races held for the next three days, not only entertained but also communicated strong messages relating to RHD and Hari Raya. The pupils took part in a ‘Wefi e’ photo contest with their friends and roving pupil reporters interviewed some pupils on what RHD means to them. The RHD concluded with a video montage of the three days of activities and celebrations, which highlighted the common values

Mini-Olympics for our younger pupils

The annual PVPS Olympics for all Primary Three to Primary Six pupils was held on 30 May this year. It was a fun-fi lled day for the pupils and teachers. Spirits were high and the mood on that day was exuberant! Prior to the actual day, students had gone through several rounds of house practices and practiced their house cheers. After several tough matches and relays on that day, the Harrier House emerged as the overall champion for 2014. Congratulations to the Harrier House! In the meantime, train harder for year 2015!

This is so fun!

We kicked off this year’s 49th National Day Celebration with the Observance Ceremony in the parade square. The march past involved our Scouts, Brownies and SLC key leaders. Our NE Ambassadors then led the school in the recollections in which our pupils renew their pledge to our Country and one another. This was followed by vivacious singing by the various levels. Our P3 and P4 pupils rendered “One Singapore” and “Reach Out for the Skies” respectively. This was followed by the Mini-Olympics and Arts Fusion Day. The House Mistresses inaugurated the P1 and P2 Mini-Olympics event with a torch relay, ending with our Principal, Madam Goh, lighting the torch. Pupils participated in relay events which consisted of simple gymnastics movements, dribbling, throwing, hopping and so on. Everyone had fun competing and cheering on that day. Not only that, pupils went home with a medal each! Lion House prevailed and emerged as champion! The day ended with the ever popular chicken dance, with parents, teachers and pupils all joining in the fun. The objective of the Arts Fusion activities is to promote art and music appreciation and creativity in aesthetics among our pupils. This year’s Art Fusion Day included activities such as picture collage for P3, Inchies for P4, hanging mobiles for P5 and NE story doodles for our P6 pupils. The grand fi nale of the celebrations saw the various sport houses, including the teachers, competing in the ‘What’s my name?’ and ‘We are Singaporean’ quiz games.

In July, PVPS hosted visits from 2 kindergartens. The purpose of the visit was to give the K2 pupils a glimpse of primary school life. 19 K2 pupils and 3 teachers from Cherie Hearts Kidz Campus and 40 K2 pupils and 6 teachers from Blk 738 Paris Ris West Education Centre visited our school. During the visits, the pupils were taken on a school tour by our school prefects and participated in some of the school’s activities. The little ones had a taste of recess and were given the opportunity to buy food on their own. They also had a hands-on session during the ‘Budding Chef” activity, conducted by our PSG. The K2 pupils were all smiles as they received a copy of our production – “Off To School We Go!” Activity Book and were treated to a storytelling session in the library. All the best to all these K2 pupils and we look forward to you joining our school in 2015!

Sim Guan Chua was a student of PVPS from 1998 to 2003. Guan Chua started playing hockey whilst in PVPS. Throughout his years in Raffl es Institution and Raffl es Junior College, Guan Chua continued his passion for the sports. He was the hockey team captain in 2005, 2007 and vice-captain in 2009.

In 2010, Guan Chua enlisted into National Service where he was commissioned as an offi cer of the arm forces in January 2011. He was awarded the Best NSF Offi cer of the Year by his formation. Currently, Guan Chua is a year 3 medical student of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS. He hopes to become a good doctor and be able to help people.

Besides studying hard, Guan Chua plays hard too. Once or twice a week, he joins a group of friends in a game of unicycle hockey. Occasionally, they go on trips to Pulau Ubin for off-road riding and once, even to West Sumatra, Indonesia, to ride around the caldera lake, Lake Maninjau.

He also enjoys traveling. In Japan, he worked, in exchange for accommodation and food, in places like farms, or hostels, or even a peach plantation, doing things ranging from harvesting wheat, planting rice to clearing forest and fl attening slopes into fl at land. Just recently, he volunteered at an elephant nature park in Chiang Mai.

It was also here that he made many good friends whom he continues to be close to till today. He hopes that PVPS will continue to be where many will be nurtured and the school where they had the best times of their lives.

Wordsworth- WORDS THAT ARE COMMONLY MISUSED

1. POISON AND VENOMThough the words poison and venom are often used interchangeably—and although they both describe a toxin that interferes with a physiological process—there is a difference. It is all about how the substance is delivered: Venom is delivered via an anatomical device like fangs.Poison is usually inhaled, ingested, or absorbed.
