The District School Board: Job Description

•  Accountability to the students in the District, Provincial Government and the community

•  Policy Development, Implementa(on and Evalua(on

•  Planning •  Director/District School Board rela(ons •  Fiscal Responsibility •  Board Development

•  Poli(cal Advocacy and Communica(on

•  Recogni(on

Responsibilities

The District School Board:

• Promotes student achievement and well-‐being

• Ensures effec(ve stewardship of the Board’s resources • Delivers effec(ve and appropriate educa(on programs to its pupils

• Develops and maintains policies and organiza(onal structures

• Monitors and evaluates the effec(veness of policies

• Develops and annually reviews a mul(-‐year plan

• Monitors and evaluates the performance of the Board’s director

Roles: The Trustee

The Trustee:

•  is a member of a team – the board of trustees

•  First Na(on trustees appointed to the board are considered elected members of the board

•  Par(cipates in decision making as a member of the board but has no individual authority to make decisions on behalf of the board

•  Par(cipates in policy-‐making and strategic planning

•  Balances the governance and cons(tuency roles, bringing the concerns of parents, students and supporters to the Board

•  Entrust the day-‐to-‐day management of the Board to its staff through the director

•  Maintain focus on student achievement and well-‐being

•  Comply with the Board’s code of conduct

•  Carry out responsibili(es in a manner that assists the Board in fulfilling its du(es

•  AXend and par(cipate Board and commiXee mee(ngs

•  Consult with parents, students and supporters on mul(-‐year plan

•  Bring parents, students and supporters concerns to the Board

•  Uphold the implementa(on of Board resolu(ons passed by the Board

Responsibilities of Individual Trustees



Roles: Chair of the Board

•  Elected by the Board •  One year term

•  Main spokesperson for the Board

•  Has the same rights as any other member of the Board

•  Must adhere to the Board’s direc(ons

•  Has several specific du(es under the Educa(on Act

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

•  Preside over mee(ngs of the Board •  Conduct the mee(ngs in accordance with Board procedures and prac(ces

•  Ensure that agendas are prepared for Board mee(ngs

•  Ensure that members of the Board have informa(on needed for informed discussion

•  Act as spokesperson to the public on behalf of the Board

•  Convey the decisions of the Board to the Director

•  Provide leadership to the Board in maintaining the Board’s focus on the mission and vision and on the mul(-‐year plan

•  Assume other responsibili(es specified by the Board

Roles: The Director of Education

•  The Board’s Chief Execu(ve Officer

•  As Chief Educa(on Officer is an exemplary educator and leader

•  Is aware of and ac(ve in legisla(ve developments

•  Is poli(cally astute •  Has an extensive knowledge of relevant provincial laws •  Is a model of effec(ve communica(ons

Roles: The Director of Education

•  The Director and Board of trustees work in partnership to aXain vision, mission, strategic goals and priori(es

•  The trustees rely on the Director to direct staff and implement all policy through the Director’s office

•  The Board of Trustees is responsible for the recruitment, selec(on and performance evalua(on of the director

The Director of Educa(on is:
