Responsibilities

The  District  School  Board:  

• Promotes  student  achievement  and  well-­‐being  

• Ensures  effec(ve  stewardship  of  the  Board’s  resources  • Delivers  effec(ve  and  appropriate  educa(on  programs  to  its  pupils  

• Develops  and  maintains  policies  and  organiza(onal  structures  

• Monitors  and  evaluates  the  effec(veness  of  policies  

• Develops  and  annually  reviews  a  mul(-­‐year  plan  

• Monitors  and  evaluates  the  performance  of  the  Board’s  director

Roles: The Trustee

The  Trustee:  

•  is  a  member  of  a  team  –  the  board  of  trustees  

•  First  Na(on  trustees  appointed  to  the  board  are  considered  elected        members  of  the  board  

•  Par(cipates  in  decision  making  as  a  member  of  the  board  but  has  no    individual  authority  to  make  decisions  on  behalf  of  the  board  

•  Par(cipates  in  policy-­‐making  and  strategic  planning  

•  Balances  the  governance  and  cons(tuency  roles,  bringing  the  concerns  of  parents,  students  and  supporters  to  the  Board

•  Maintain  focus  on  student  achievement  and  well-­‐being  

•  Comply  with  the  Board’s  code  of  conduct  

•  Carry  out  responsibili(es  in  a  manner  that  assists  the  Board  in  fulfilling  its  du(es  

•  AXend  and  par(cipate  Board  and  commiXee  mee(ngs  

•  Consult  with  parents,  students  and  supporters  on  mul(-­‐year  plan  

•  Bring  parents,  students  and  supporters  concerns  to  the  Board  

•  Uphold  the  implementa(on  of  Board  resolu(ons  passed  by  the  Board

•  Elected  by  the  Board  •  One  year  term

•  Has  several  specific  du(es  under  the  Educa(on  Act

SPECIFIC  DUTIES:  

•  Preside  over  mee(ngs  of  the  Board  •  Conduct  the  mee(ngs  in  accordance  with  Board  procedures  and  prac(ces  

•  Ensure  that  agendas  are  prepared  for  Board  mee(ngs  

•  Ensure  that  members  of  the  Board  have  informa(on  needed  for  informed  discussion  

•  Act  as  spokesperson  to  the  public  on  behalf  of  the  Board  

•  Convey  the  decisions  of  the  Board  to  the  Director  

•  Provide  leadership  to  the  Board  in  maintaining  the  Board’s  focus  on  the  mission  and  vision  and  on  the  mul(-­‐year  plan  

•  Assume  other  responsibili(es  specified  by  the  Board

Roles: The Director of Education

•  The  Director  and  Board  of  trustees  work  in  partnership  to  aXain  vision,  mission,  strategic  goals  and  priori(es  

•  The  trustees  rely  on  the  Director  to  direct  staff  and  implement  all  policy  through  the  Director’s  office  

•  The  Board  of  Trustees  is  responsible  for  the  recruitment,  selec(on  and  performance  evalua(on  of  the  director
