Do we use Old Testament passages to defend beliefs? We must first begin by defining what we mean when we say “Old Testament law”. Think about it:

Are you confident speaking to someone about the law and its

relation to Christianity?

Memory Verse- Galatians 3:13 “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us:

Your Thoughts Is the Old Testament law something that

Christians of today need to follow? Should Christians follow all of it, some of it, or none of it? I imagine these are questions among many others you have considered in your own life when it comes to the Old Testament law. Just how applicable is the Old Testament to New Testament Christianity? The questions I have considered and been confronted with deal mostly with how you live your daily life. Should we observe a sabbath day? Are Christians allowed to eat all types of food? What about how you dress? What about capital punishment and the stoning of people for crimes? Do we use Old Testament passages to defend beliefs? We must first begin by defining what we mean when we say “Old Testament law”. The word “law” is used 300 times in the Old Testament and can refer to the Law of Moses, any teachings that are found in the Old Testament, or God’s Word as a whole. For this study we want to look specifically at the Law of Moses. This was the law that God gave to Moses for the nation of Israel on Mt. Sinai. Read Exodus 19:10-25.

Part 1

THE BIBLE WAY TO HEAVEN

Realize That God Loves You. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).

The Bible Says That All Men Are Sinners. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory to God.” (Romans 3:23).

God’s Word Also Says That Sin Must Be Paid For. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

The Good News Is That Christ Paid for Our Sins. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).

We Must Personally Pray and Receive Christ by Faith as Our Personal Saviour. The Bible Says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).

What choice have you made?

Your Thoughts

Think about it:

What was the Abrahamic covenant based upon, keeping

the law or faith?

Think About it:

If a person breaks just one law one time they are guilty of breaking

the law.

The Establishment of the Law The Law of Moses covers civil, criminal, judicial, constitutional, ecclesiastical, and ceremonial affairs for the nation of Israel. It is given in Exodus and explained further through Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The law can be broken down into three distinct areas: commandments governing moral life in Exodus chapter twenty; judgments governing social life in chapters twenty-one through twenty-three; and ordinances covering religious life in chapters twenty-five through thirty-one. The law was given 430 years after the promise to Abraham. Read Genesis 12:1-3 and 15:3-6. Was the promise to Abraham based on him keeping the law or his faith in God? The promise to Abraham was based

on faith in God’s word. This is mentioned three times in the New Testament in Romans 4:3, Galatians 3:6, and James 2:23. The law was given 430 years after Abraham believed God’s promise. Israel is now an independent nation and needs laws to govern itself.

What was the purpose of God giving the law? Read Galatians 3:16-29. First, the law established a standard of righteousness. It reveals God’s way for morality, character, and conduct. Israel was now a nation on their own and needed a written and permanent standard. Second, in verse nineteen, the law reveals and identifies sin. Paul says in Romans 7:7, “Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law.” The law casts a spotlight on sin and shows it to us. How else could we know what sin is? Thirdly, in verse twenty-four, the law is what brings us to Jesus Christ.

“What Does God Have to Say About...” Lesson 3

The law rules that all men are guilty in God’s court against His law. Read Galatians 3:10-13, 5:1-3, and James 2:9-11. If a person breaks just one law one time they are guilty of breaking the law. Think about the ten commandments in Exodus 20:1-18. Have you ever lied, took something from someone, desired something that was not yours, or made anything more important than God in your life? This is just four of the ten commandments. If you have ever broken just one of these in your whole lifetime you are guilty. Read John 3:16-18. God does not leave us here helpless. Jesus died on the cross for you. He satisfied all that God demands in the law. You have a choice to make. There are two options available. Either you keep the entire law or you believe on Jesus Christ. Read Galatians 2:16. As you can see, it is impossible to keep the law. That leaves you and I condemned already in the face of the law. The good news is that Jesus Christ has paid the penalty for you. In order to apply His payment to your life, you must call upon Him to save you.

Your Thoughts

The Purpose of the Law

The law reveals our sin and finds us guilty. The law helps us understand what Jesus Christ has done for us on the cross. It points to the need for a Saviour that can only be found in Jesus Christ. Fourthly, the law reveals to us the absolute holiness of God. Read Romans 7:12. God is so holy that He detests sin. It must be punished and so God’s wrath abides on sin. The Ruling of the Law
