Choice of planting materialPyrethrum is cultivated for the production of pyrethrins. Farmers are paid according to the concentration of pyrethrins in the dry fl owers. Farmers are advised to plant only cultivars recommended for their regions.

Such material are propagated in pyrethrum nurseries located in all pyrethrum growing areas. Farmers are advised to obtain planting material from these nurseries.

Improved cultivars have high fl ower yields and high pyrethrins content; they are also non-lodging and resistant to diseases and pests.

Recommended commercial clones and varieties1. High altitude clones

IntroductionPyrethrum was introduced in Kenya from Europe in the late 1920s. It started as a large-scale crop, but today it is widely cultivated in the highlands of East Africa by small-scale farmers. Kenya produces about 70% of the world supply. The success of pyrethrum cultivation is attributed to good weather conditions.

Pyrethrum fi eld It is favoured by cool temperatures and high rainfall which occur in the high attitude areas ranging from 1500–3000m. Fertile and well-drained soils of moderate organic matter are also ideal for vigorous pyrethrum fl ower production.

Pyrethrum continuously fl owers for about 10 months in a year. The fi rst picking of mature fl owers occurs 3-4 months after planting.

Consequently, the fl owers are picked every 14-21 days.
