1.

REGULATIONS.

The Medical Department is under the immediate government ofthe Medical Professors, who constitute the Faculty of Medicine,subject to the Rules and Statutes of the Board of 'l'rustees. TheFaculty consists of-

OHILDREN, andA Professor of the INSTITUTES OF l\fEDICINE.The Medical Faculty hold meetings for the purpose of arranging

and conducting the business of the department, and for the preserva­tion of order and decorum among the medical students.

One of the members acts as Dean, whose duty it is to keep theMinutes of the Faculty, to arrange the examination of the candi­dates for gracluation, to conduct the bnsiness of the Faculty at theirmeetings, and to attend'to correspondence.

The Medical Lectures begin early in October, tlnd end on the lastday of February ensuing.

'l'he Oommencement for conferring the Degree of Doctor of Mecli­cine is held by a special mandamus of the Board of Trustees duringtile month of March.

The following are the Rules in force in relation to the Degtoee of. Doctor of Medicine:-

1. 'l'he candidate mnst have attained the age of twenty-one ycal's,have applied himself to the stndy of Medicine for three years, andbeen, during that time, the private pupil for two years, at least, of arespcetable practitioner of Mcdicine.

II. The candidate must also have attended two complete coursesof the following Lectures in this Jnstitut.ion:­

Theory and Practice of Medicine,Anatomy,Materia Medica and Pharmacy,Chemistry,Surgery,Obstetrics and the Diseases of Women and Children,Institutes of Medicine.III. Medical students who have attended one complete course in a

l' spectable Medical School, where the attendance on two completecourses is necessary to a degree, and where the same branches aretaught as in this, and which is placed upon the ad eundem of thisschool, are permitted to become candidates by an attendance here forone full course; the rules of graduation being in other respectsObserved. They are also exempted from the payment of fees uponattending a second term.*

IV. When a candidate applies to the Dean for examination he must­exhibit his tickets to prove that the above rules have been compliedwith.

V. The candidate, at the time of his application, must deliver' tothe Dean of the Medical Faculty a Thesis, composed by himself, onsome medical subject. This 'l'hesis is referred to one of the Profes­sors, who shall examine the candidate upon it, and make his reportthereon to the Medical Faculty.

VI. When a candidate is rejected, his essay will be retained by theMedical Faculty.

VII. The essay must be in the candidate's own handwriting, andmust be written uniformly on letter-paper of the same size, the alter­nate pages being left blanlct

VIII. Bad spelling in a Thesis, or evidences of a want of literaryculture, will preclude a candidate from examination for a degree.

IX. .A. Thesis may be published by the candidate if he desire it,the permission of the Professor by whom he was examined thereonbeing first obtained; but no alteration shall be made in such Thesiswithout the consent of the said Professor.

X. The voting on the case of each candidate is by ballot. Candi­dates who have not been successful npon a first examination will bepcrmitted to have a second, when all the classes have been disposedof by the Faculty. The second examination will be conducted infull meeting of the Professors.

XI. The candidate shall pay the graduation fee on the presentationof his Thesis, or before receiving notice of having successfullypassed his examinations. Upon receiving such notice, he will enterhis name on the register for the purpose of being reported to theBoard of Trustecs aud included in the mandamus for a degree.

XII. Candidates who have passed their examination, and in otherrespects complied with the regulations, are to be reported by theDean to the Provost, who will communicate such report to the Boardof Trustees, in order that, if approved of by them, their mandamusbe issued for conferring the Degree.

XIII. The Degree will not be conferred upon a candidate who ab­sents himself from the Public Commencement, except by special per­mission of the Medical Faculty.

XIV. Graduates of Medical Schools, on the ad eundem list, byattending one complete course in this Institution, and complyingwith the l\bove regulations, are put upon the same footing with stu­dents who have attended two complete courses here; that is, theymay present themselves as candidates for graduation: but if theyattend a second course, their tickets will be free. Such graduates, offive years' standing, are permitted to attend the course of Lectures,upon a general ticket of admission, free of expense, except the costof the matriculating ticket. But this general ticket does not qualifyfoa: graduation.

ince the issue of the last annual Catalogue II new building for theM dical Depn.rtment has been erected at Thirty-sixth and Locu tStreets in West Plliladelphia. COl'l'esponding in architecture withthe adjacent Department of Arts and of cience, it prescnts anelegant and imposing appearance; and in its interior arrangementsnotbillg has been omitted which could render it thoroughly adaptedto its purpose, and make it in all respects the most complote build­ing devoted to medical science in the United States.

Although the annual lecture term of the Medical Department ofthe University embraces nearly f]ye months, the time wllicll may beemployed by tile student wllo desires to avail himself of all the advan­tages afforded by the school is really twice as great, or more thanten months in each year.

During the Spring and Summer students of the Medical Departmentare entitlcd to attend the Lectures of the Auxiliary Faculty on sub­jects which form a scientific basis for medicine, and illustrate severalof its branches. Those who have attended two full courses andpassed a satisfactory examination upon them, receive the degree ofPh.D. (Doctor of Philo ophy). The lectures of the Auxiliary Facultyare delivered in the afternoon, while the forenoon is occupied in part

The WI TAR AND HORNER MUSEUM, wbich was founded nearlyONE Hu DRED YEARS ago, and lIas been annually augmented, isunequalled in the United States for tlIe number and variety of itsspecimens of tlIe normal and the morbid anatomy of every part oftlIe human body. It also contains a large number of preparationsin comparative anatomy, and an extensive collection of artisticmodels, "hicll are used in illustrating the several courses of lecturesdelivered in tile Medical Department. '1'he ticket of matriculationin this Department entitles the ilolder to admission to the Museum,which is open on Wednesday and Saturday of each week, from 9 to12 A. M., throughout tile session.

The CABINET of the Professor ~f Tlleory and Practice of Medicine,collected by Dr. George B. Wood while be held that chair, andgenerously placed by him at the service of his successors, containsan extensive series of wet preparations, drawings, and models in waxand other materials, which together form a collection unrivalled inextent and value, for illustrating diseases of tbe internal organs andof the skin.

by the Medical and Surgical Clinics, and by special clinical lecturesupon Phy ical Diagnosis, Diseases of the Eye, of the dnary Organs,of Women and Chiluren, and of the Skin, at the UNIVERSITY Hos­PITAL. Lecturrs on Regional Anatomy, and on Microscopy andUrinary Chemistry, complete the programme. For about a monthbefore the opening of the Winter Scssion, Clinical and Demonstmth·electures of the same general character are delivered.

The different courscs of lecture have been so arranged as toenablc students to pursue a systematic plan of study, in which theyounger may give themselves np wholly to didactic instruction, whilethe more advanced have thc opportunity of seeing the scientificprinciples and the art of medicine practically illustrated and applied.

VI.

TilE HOSPITAL OF THE UNIVERSITYOF PENN YLVA IA.

Before the opening of the Winter course of lectures for 1874-75,the University Hospital will be in full operation. An elegant andcommodious edifice, constructed accordiug to the be t establi hedprinciples of hospital architecture, provided with all the appliancespertaining to such institutions of the first class, and adjacent to thenew Medical Hall, this Hospital will form an integral portion of theMedical Department. Attendance on the Clinical Lectures deliveredin its amphitheatre and its wards will form a part of the daily priYi­leges of the students, and ample opportunities will be afforrled to themore advanced among them to gain a personal and practical acquaint­ance with Clinical Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, and Specialties.These subjects will ~ tnught by the severnl Clinical Professors in the

niversity, and by the Professors and Lecturers at the Hospital.

VII.

OTHER HOSPITALS A D HOSPITAL CLINIOS.

In !tddition to the official clinicnl lectures delivered at the Uni­versity Hospital and the other diversified means 'of acquiring prac­tical knowledge and skill which that Institution will afford, medicalstudents wi1l have the opportunity of attending clinical lectures inother Hospitals, as well as private classes formed for the special tudyof disense.

At the PIIILADELPHIA HOSPITAL, which is contiguous to the gronnds

of the University, contains 900 beds, and is the only large hospitalin the nited States where all the medical attendants are continuouslyon duty, Clinical lectures are delivered twice a week on Medicine,

urgery, and the Diseases of Women and Children. Lectures onClinical Medicine and Surgery are also delivered twice a week duringthe whole year by the Medical Staff of the PENN YLVANIA HOSPITAL..A t both of these institutions students are admitted without charge.During the spring and summer private classes are also formedfor Clinical Instruction, for which a moderate fee is required. Inthese classes students are fully instructed in the art of recordingcases, and in the various methods of physical examination employedin Clinical Medicine.

The PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL, situated in West Philadelphia at aconvenient distance from the University, may be added to the list ofinstitntions which will be especially accessible to the students ofthe University.

Among the other Hospitals where Clinical Instruction is given, andwhich are open to students, may be mentioned: The EPISCOPAL,\'iTILLS (Eye IIospital), CHILDREN'S, LYING-IN, ST. JOSEPII'S, ST.FRANCIS, GERMAN, and JEWISII IIOSPITALS.

The following Dispensaries are also available for students, manyof whom are systemv.tically instructed in practice by the visitingphysicians; The PI1ILADELPHIA, The SOUTI1ERN, 'I'he ORTHER, andThe MOYAMENSING DISPENSARIES.

Appointments of RESIDENT PI1ysroIANS are made annuv.lly in thedifferent Hospitals of the city, and are open to competition by thegraduates of the school, of whom a large number have filled thesval uable situations.

From the precedin~ summary it is evident that a prolonged resi­dence in the city must be of the utmost valu; to the student, byenabling him to pursue a systematic course of study and to becoD!))mctically familiar with the scientific methods of investigating dis­ease, and with the principles and results of its treatment.

VIII.

PRACTIOAL ANATOMY.

The DISSECTING ROOMS of the University are open throughont the)'ear (except July and August), under the superintendence of theProfessor of Anatomy and the Demonstrator.

In bnilding the new Medical Hall of the University, cltre has beentaken to provide Dissecting Rooms that shall contain everything that

experience has suggested as being necessary or desirable.. TheseRooms are unusually large and high. Their ventilation will be ofthe most perfect kind, and adapted both to winter and. summer. 'l'helight will be strong and equably diffused over the whole space by meansof extensive skylights and side-windows. There will be gas burnersover every table for work by night. Every table will have a stonetop, which cannot absorb the discharges and can be kept perrectlyclean. 'l'here will be numerous washstands, and many private closets.Cleanliness will be rigidly enforced. The preservation of the cadaverhas been so successfully accomplished as almost to do away with tiledangers of dissecting wounds. Dissection is legalized in Penn­sylvania, and therefore the cost of material is very small.

IX.

PRAOTIOAL SURGERY.

The OPERATING ROOM is open during the Session, under the super­vision of the Professor of Surgery and his Assistants. Every studentis here thorougilly instructed and practically trained in the applica­tion of bandages and surgical apparatus, and in the performance ofoperations upon the cadaver. Instruments, splints, and bandages aresupplied free of cost.

X.

PRAOTIOAL OHEMISTRY.

The WORKING LABORATORY for PRACTIOAL CUEMISTRY, under thesupervision of the Professor of Chemistry aided by his Assistant, willbe open during the Winter Session, and a portion of each spring andautumn.

The instruction here given will be in harmony with the ChemicalLectures of the WINTER SESSION, and will be conducted in such amanner as to secure to the student a PRACTIOAL familiarity with theapparatus, materials, processes, and reactions which are the subjectsof his professional study, and which are to be availed of in his sub­sequent practice.

The courses will be arranged under three heads, according to thepreparation of the pupil and his own especial wants and choice.

1. MANIPULATION, in which each student will ilimself prepare theapparatus, perform the various experiments, find trace the reactions,as shown and explained in tile regular Winter Lectures of the Pro­fessor of Chemistry.

II. QUALITATIVE and QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS, SO far as relates tothe wants of the Medical Practitioner. 'I'his will include an exten­sive range of testing for the discrimination between the varioushurtful substances that may call for antidotes and those which areharmless j and will embrace Toxicology, 01' the practical separationand detection of poisons in ORGANIO MIXTURES and TISSUES. •

The student will also in this course be conducted practicallythrough the man ufacture of all the prominent AOIDS and ALTS, andthe extraction or preparation of the important ALKALOIDS, ETITERS,and other ORGANIO PRODUCTS.

III. The EXAMINATION OF ORlIIAL and ABNORMAL PRODUCTS ofthe human body as aiding in the diagnosis of disease, such as urine,urinary deposits, bile, blood, etc.

EXAMINATIONs.-In connection with these courses of instruction,the student will be systematically examined upon the subjects of hisstudy.

XI.

TilE PIIYSIOLOGIOAL LABORATORY

Will be under the charge of the Professor of the Institutes ofMedicine, aided by competcnt Assistants. Its main object will be toafford the Student an opportunity to study Physiology by experi­ment and personal observation.

'I'he functions of the various organs and the sources, constitntion,and destination of the secretions and excretions will be studied in theliving and dead subject by the student, either singly or in classes.

A full supply of all tlle necessary mat rials will be afforded for thepractical study of tilis department.

XII.

THE A ATOMIOAL LABORATORY

Will be under the supervision of the Professor of Anatomy, and tiledireut guidance of his Assistant, Dr. ITemy C. Chapman. Tile special01 ject of thc Laboratory is to afford a limited number of students theopportunity of studying practical Comparative Anatomy in its rela­tion with ITuman Anatomy and Physiology. It is proposed that tilestudent shall make for himself dissections of at least one representa­tive of each class of animals from the lowest to the iligbest. Themicroscope will be in constant aid of the study.

PRIZES.

Two PRIZES of One Hundred Dollars each will be awarded .to themembers of the Graduating Class of 18'T4-~5 for the two bcst Essaysupon Medical subjects, provided such Essays are of sufficient meritto be worthy of publication.

One of these prizes has been instituted by the SOOIETY OF THEALUMNI of the Medical Department of the University.

The other has been authorized by a liberal friend of the University.ANATOMIOAL PRIZES.-A" Gold Medal" will be awarded by the

Demonstrator of Anatomy to that student who shall xhibit thegreatest diligence, care, and skill in the practical study of anatomy.

A Prize of TIIIRTY DOLLARS will also be awarded by the Demon­strator to tlJe student who shall present the best record of the anoma­lies found in the anatomical rooms during the year.

The names of those to whom the prizes are awarded will heannounced at the Annual commencement of the Medical Department.

The branches of Natural History, forming the subjects of thethree Professorships first named, will bc taught mainly in referenceto their medical relations.

All students who have matriculated in the Medical Department,and have taken the tickets of two of the Medical Faculty, have theright of admission to the lectnres. Attendance upon these lecturesis not compulsory upon the students in the fedical Department.

Gentlemeu not students or graduates of the Medical Departmentcan obtain the right of admission to the lecture by takiug the ticketsand matriculating. Those dcsiring to attend the course will applyto the Dean.

The several courses will each consist of at least thirty-four lec­tures, to be delivered, at hours fixed by the Faculty, three times aweek during the months of April, May, and Juue, commencing onthird Monday in March, and ending on Saturday, June 21st.

Tile degree of Doctor of Philosophy will be confel'l'ed upon thosemedical graduates of thc University of Pennsylvania, or of otherMedical Schools upon the ad eundurn list, who shall have attendedtwo courses of lectures, and have passe 1 a satisfactory examinationthereon by the Faculty. To such, a Diploma will be granted by theUniversity.

In acoordanoe with the aotion of the Sooiety at the late Annual Meeting, theExeoutive Committee would earnestly invite their fellow-Alumni throughout theoountry, who have not yet joined the Sooiety, to forward their names (with refer­enoes to 1001\1 organizations, or to the Amerioan Medioal Assooiation, as to standing)to Dr. Riohard A. Cleeman, Corresponding Seoretary, or to Prof. R. E. Rogers, of theUniversity of Pennsylvania. The Exeoutive Committee would also be glad toreoeive nominations of Alumni, for appointment as looal Seoretaries, to organizelocal Sooieties and to obtain additional members for the general Society.

The partioipation of the graduates in the Anniversary Celebration-not onlywith sUbsoriptions, but with their personal attendance-is also earnestly invited,in the interests of professional good-fellowship, as well as of the Sooiety of theAlumni and their Alma Mll.ter.
