About us

Mackintosh At The Willow, exquisitely designed inside and out by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, was opened in 1903 by successful Glasgow businesswoman Kate Cranston. After a 4-year restoration we are now open to visitors of all ages!

The Art Nouveau building, filled with iconic Mackintosh furniture, is incredibly beautiful and inspiring and can be used as a launch pad for observational drawing, photography, design projects, and of course stencilling.

Come for a guided tour, including of course the magnificent Salon de Luxe, then visit the interactive exhibition centre afterwards to find out more.

We offer fully resourced workshops for all ages across the curriculum. Explore being in charge of a historic site, be inspired by Kate Cranston’s business skills, meet an ‘Expert’ and interview them about their job, try out arts and drama in our wonderful spaces or just tell us how the building can help you!

Mackintosh At The Willow– much more than just a Tea Rooms!

Interactive exhibition over two floors

There’s lots to do in our exhibition space, including costumes, games and artefacts. If your class wants to learn more about turn of the century Glasgow, tea and the incredible partnership of Mackintosh and Cranston this is perfect! The exhibition is also a wonderful resource for a literacy based lesson. Chat to our Creative Learning and Education Manager about how it can help you meet curriculum targets.

Stencilling and art nouveau workshops

We have a dedicated art room so why not bring your class for one of our lively art sessions? Try out stencilling after seeing how Mackintosh used it in the Tea Rooms, or make your own Art Nouveau piece, inspired by Margaret Macdonald. Need an arts specialist? We can sort one out for you.

Creative writing and theatre workshops

What a space to explore characters in! Our drama professional can help your class create characters, improve voicework and express themselves in a lively and inspiring way. If it’s creative writing you’re after then sign up for our poetry class and make use of the astounding Salon de Luxe doors in the exhibition centre.
