Dear Friends,Your support during these difficult economic times is sincerely appreciated. Those who stay in our shelters, who are housed, who are enrolled in our educational programs, and who benefit from our behavioral health programs add their voice of thanks for your gifts of time, talent, and financial support.

The economy is showing signs of improvement, but the change is slow for those who are trying to move out of homelessness. Our goal is to decrease our reliance on government funding, but to do so means we must attract additional funding from private donors like you. The community need for our services continues and our need for your support remains.

Our approach to solving homelessness is to offer a continuum of shelter and meals, mental health and substance abuse counseling, education and employment opportunities, and supportive housing. Pictured with me is Phil Woods, formerly homeless and a graduate of our culinary program, CHEFS, Conquering Homelessness through Employment in Food Services. A chef at Richmond Area Multi-Services, Phil has recently joined our Board of Directors and now trains others to successfully enter the food service industry workforce.

The next year represents a milestone for Episcopal Community Services — our 30th year of serving the community. While our roots in San Francisco are much deeper, we have diligently assisted homeless people in our present configuration since 1983. The need for the services we provide has not abated, and our need for your support continues. In fact, ECS could provide more needed services to our clients if we had the financial resources to do so. We hope you will remain generous and will support our effort to pursue new and effective ways to assist our clients and end homelessness.

Sincerely,

Edita and Arcadio Reyes enjoy the diverse community at ECS’s Canon Kip Senior Center where they serve lunch to fellow participants. “The Senior Center attracted us be-cause of the camaraderie among the people we meet,” says Arcadio. “It’s a wonderful community.”

Arcadio explains that the Senior Center’s health and nu-trition presentations have helped him and Edita to take better care of themselves. “We learn about reducing sugar and salt and cooking vegetables,” he says, alluding to the weekly supplemental food that the Senior Center distributes to all participating seniors. “I tell everyone that the food here is good and that the meals are very fresh, cooked right here.”

“The Senior Center keeps us active and healthy!” Edita

chimes in. In addition to serving lunch nearly every day, Edita assists Senior Center staff with paperwork and basic computer work. “We love Canon Kip Senior Center! It is the best place for us.”

Canon Kip Senior Center has been feeding and assisting elderly residents of the SOMA neighborhood since 1975. In 1983, it also became a host site for The Episcopal Sanctuary shelter and later merged with the shelter to form Episcopal Community Services.

Cheng feels very fortunate to live in one of Episcopal Community Services’ 838 supportive housing units. “ECS has been a big help to me. Housing is so important because in the shelters, when you’re a parent of small children you always worry about where you’re going to live next. It’s so scary. With ECS, that anxiety is gone.”

In 2008, Cheng received stable housing at ECS’s Canon Barcus Community House (home to 47 formerly homeless families), and soon afterwards she enrolled full-time in college classes in order to obtain her degree in nurs-ing. Cheng also works 20 hours a week at the college’s student retention center while her children are busy in school and after school care.

Cheng, who became homeless due to domestic vio-lence, feels deep gratitude for the support she found at ECS. “Like a family, they believe in me and support me.” In turn, she serves on the Canon Barcus tenant council, helping to build community. She also assists with weekly food distribution whenever she can. “It’s my way of giv-ing back,” she says with a confident smile.

Helping out her neighbors has enabled Cheng to break through her natural shyness. Now she visits and encour-ages everyone in her building, not just those with whom she feels most culturally attuned. “It’s very important to support people,” Cheng asserts. “Everyone needs to have someone they can rely on in bad times. I hope that ECS keeps this program going for a long time to come. ”

The week Christina Laygo graduated from the CHEFS train-ing program, she started working at Zynga as a culinary assistant. “They ask me why I’m always smiling, and I say, ‘Because there’s so much to smile about!’ I’m blessed. Twice over, I’m blessed.”

Christina says that her first blessing was CHEFS, which prepared her for the second blessing, the job with Zynga. “CHEFS gave me the skills that I needed to be well-versed

in the kitchen: knife skills, familiarity with the equipment, kitchen lingo, and versatility in different cooking styles. Plus, you get to learn from not just one great chef but from many great chefs!” she adds, referring to ECS’s guest chef program in which local executive chefs volunteer to share their expertise with CHEFS students.

A survivor of domestic violence, Christina didn’t know how she would provide for herself or where she would live. During the CHEFS program, she also underwent a biopsy for breast cancer, a terrifying prospect for someone without health insurance. But CHEFS helped her to address her fears and come out smiling. “The CHEFS program helped me through those scary times, and now I know I can stand on my own two feet. “Just like a family, we’re there for each other, helping each other. We’re in class together every day. We eat together; we share together. CHEFS became a place of comfort for me, a blessing. For me, CHEFS is spectacular, definitely a path to success!”

Monroe Gaines loves working in The Sanctuary shelter’s garden, even though it’s been years since he was homeless and staying at the shelter. Originally from a Mississippi

farm, Monroe says that The Sanctuary garden is his “place of comfort.” Now that he’s housed, tending to the garden is his gift and his pleasure.

Isaac, a current resident of The Sanctuary, comments that The Sanctuary’s kitchen is his refuge because it’s a place where he feels appreciated and involved. He spends his afternoons prepping meals, using the garden’s produce when possible. “The Sanctuary’s kitchen staff and social service coordinators are wonderful,” Isaac says, adding, “They are always willing to lend a listening ear.” At the kitchen staff’s recommendation, Isaac is applying for ECS’s CHEFS culinary training program.

For nearly 30 years, The Sanctuary shelter has provided people like Monroe and Isaac with clean, safe sleeping quarters, breakfast and dinner, vital health and social services, and a sense of community. Many residents of ECS’s The Sanctuary and Next Door shelters are able to find more permanent housing and to stabilize and improve their lives with the support of ECS shelter staff. Like Monroe, they often find ways of giving back, and at ECS, we welcome their gifts.

Episcopal Community Services of San Francisco thanks the following donors for their generous support. Gifts from the community constitute a vital resource for our programs, and we are grateful for each and every one. These gifts and donations were received between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012.
