At System Sensor, innovation is more than an ideal; innovation is our way of life. Every day we design new products that areconvenient to install and efficient to operate, providing our customers with the highest level of reliability. In other words, wemake it our business to develop advanced ideas that deliver advanced solutions.

Conventional Detection- a complete range of smoke detectors led by 300 series.

Instrinsically Safe detectors are designed to afford open area protection and are for use in hazardous areas where potentiallyexplosive atmospheres are likely to arise.

Reflective Beam Detector- innovative detector which offers a single ended solution that lowers installation and maintenancecosts for open areas and high ceilings.

Manual Call Point-Installation efficiency, Flexibility and full compliance with latest standards are at the heart of new Indoor CallPoint range.

AV Notification- the spectralert line, featuring the selectable output series of multiple-candela units.

HVAC System- the Innovair line and other specialty detectors designed to detect smoke in the air duct network.

Sprinkler System Monitoring – products designed to sense the flow of water through pipes, switches and valves.

Aspiration Detection System- combines the performance characteristics and high sensitivity of an aspiration system with theconvenience, flexibility and sophistication of a fire system.

The Zone Display Unit is a powered 5 character LCD unitintended for installation at the point of entry into a fire zone orat the fire control panel. When a detector on that zone goesinto alarm the module displays the numeric addressassociated with that point, providing quick and accurateinformation about the location of the alarm.

S300ZDU

The 300 Series range of detectors is produced using the latest in manufacturing and design techniques, pushing out theboundaries of existing conventional detector technology. With a multitude of innovative features, Series 300 detectors ‘actconventionally, think intelligently’.

300 Series detectors can be used in conjunction with the S300RPTU remote hand-held programming unit to gain accessto many advanced features including: read/write last maintenance date; read chamber contamination level; read value ofthe smoke or thermal element and perform an alarm test. Each unit can be programmed with a unique address. Whenused in conjunction with the S300ZDU and a compatible control this address will be displayed on the S300ZDUwhenever the detector is in alarm.

All the features via the hand-held programming unit are achieved effectively and effortlessly without the need to removethe detector or having to gain direct physical access (other than by the use of ‘No Climb Products’ or similar servicingtool), saving valuable commissioning / maintenance time. They provide an end user with the confidence to know that thefire system is being regularly serviced and that it is operating at it’s optimum level, with minimum disruption to businessactivities.

SERIES 300 ACCESSORIES

Complementing 300 series detectors are a host of accessories designed to enhance installation, test operation &maintenance.

The programmer unit provides several features including Readand write the last maintenance date, Read Chambercontamination level and thermal element value, Select alarmthreshold, Programme device address, Instruct detector to latchinto an alarm. This extremely powerful unit will revolutionizethe procedures required when a series 300 system iscommissioned or maintained. When used its visible lighttransmission mode the range is short. However, in the radiocommunication mode the programmer unit has an effectiverange of typically 8 metres. The radio unit is clipped to thedetector using a No Climb or similar pole; it then acts as aninterface unit between the maintenance unit and the detector.

The BEAM6500 Series projected beam smoke detectors are equipped with both a transmitter and a receiver in one unit. Theyare easy to align and come complete with a reflector. The BEAM6500RS model comes with an integral sensitivity test feature. With six sensitivity levels, the BEAM6500 can be set to respond accurately in its respective environment. Plus, with multipleaccessories ranging from multi-mounting to device heating, the BEAM6500 is capable of protecting any highceiling area. The 6500RS and 6500R detectors are combined transmitter/receiver units that canbe directly connected to a conventional detector circuit. The Infra-Red transmitter generatesa beam of light towards a high efficiency reflector. The reflector returns the beam to thereceiver where an analysis of the received signal is made. The change in the strength ofthe received signal is used to determine the alarm condition.

Where a ceiling comprises a series of small cells, for examplea honeycomb ceiling, or a series of closely spaced beams, forexample floor of ceiling joists, the recommended spacing andsiting of detectors changes further, dependant on the ceilingheight and the depth and spacing of the beams. Referenceshould be made to relevant standards for details (in the UKBS5839 Part 1: 2002, 22.3.k Tables 1 and 2).

Simple spacing plans for smoke and heat detectors

Ceiling HeightCeiling HeightCeiling HeightCeiling HeightCeiling HeightSmoke or heat detectors can only detect fires once a certainamount of smoke or heat has reached the sensor. As theheight of a ceiling increases, the time taken for smoke orheat to reach a sensor will increase, and it will become dilutedwith clean, cool air. As a result, maximum ceiling heightsare limited as indicated in table below.

Maximum ceiling height for different types of detector

Often, a boundary layer can form close to the ceiling, which isfree of smoke and remains cool. To avoid this, and maximisethe probability of detection, smoke detectors should normallybe mounted with their smoke entry 25mm-600mm below theceiling, and heat detectors should be mounted with their heatelement 25mm-150mm below the ceiling.

Ceiling ObstructionsCeiling ObstructionsCeiling ObstructionsCeiling ObstructionsCeiling ObstructionsCeiling obstructions such as beams greater than 10% of theceiling height should be treated as a wall, and will thus dividea room. Detectors should not be mounted within 500mm ofsuch an obstruction.

If the depth an obstruction such as a beam is less than 10% ofthe height of the ceiling, but greater than 250mm deep, thendetectors should not be mounted any closer than 500mm tothe obstruction.

Where an obstruction such as a beam or a light fitting is lessthan 250mm in depth, detectors should not be mounted anycloser to the obstruction than twice its depth (see figure 1.1below)

If the gap is less than 300mm it should be treatedas a wall (Ref. Figure 1.2).

To maintain a free flow of smoke and heat to the detector, aclear space should be maintained for 500mm in all directionsbelow the detector.

Partitions

Sloping CeilingsSloping CeilingsSloping CeilingsSloping CeilingsSloping CeilingsWhere the ceiling is pitched or sloping, the slope of the rooftends to speed the rise of smoke or heat to the apex, hencereducing the delay before the detectors are triggered. For slopedroofs with a pitch height greater than 600mm for smokedetectors, or 150mm for heat detectors, a row of detectorsshould be placed within a maximum vertical distance of 600mmor 150mm for smoke or heat detectors respectively from theroof apex. Sloped roofs rising less than 600mm for smokedetectors or 150mm for heat detectors may be treated as a flatceiling.

Since the smoke or heat tends to rise faster up the slope, it ispermissible to use a greater spacing for the row of detectorsmounted in the apex of the roof (Ref. Figure 1.3). For eachdegree of slope of the roof, the spacing may be increased by1% up to a maximum of 25%. Care must be taken whenplacing the next row that no gaps are left in detection coverage.

CorridorsCorridorsCorridorsCorridorsCorridorsIn corridors less than 2m wide, detectors should be spaced ata distance of 15m for smoke detectors and 10.6m for heatdetectors, with the maximum dimension to a wall at the endof the corridor being 7.5m and 5.3m respectively.

In narrow rooms and corridors greater than 2m wide, due tothe way that the coverage radii of detectors intersect with thewalls of the corridor, the spacing between detectors willincrease. Figure 1.4 shows how, for a room 6m wide, thespacing for smoke detectors can be increased from thestandard 10.5m.

Alarm SignalsAlarm SignalsAlarm SignalsAlarm SignalsAlarm SignalsAudible Alarm SignalsAudible fire alarm signals must provide a clear warning of afire to all those for whom the signal is intended.

The general requirement for the volume of audible alarm signalsis that they should provide a Sound Pressure Level (SPL) of atleast 65dB(A), but not more than 120dB(A) throughout allaccessible areas of a building. See figure 1.5

General Fire Alarm Sound Pressure Levels

Exceptions to this general rule are as follows:

• In stairways the SPL may be reduced to 60dB(A)

• Enclosures less than 60m² may be reduced to 60dB(A)

• There is no minimum for enclosed areas less than 1m²

• At specific points of limited extent the SPL may be reducedto 60dB(A)

Where a continuous background noise level greater than60dB(A) is present the fire alarm signal should be 5dB abovethe ambient, but not greater than 120dB(A)

Where the alarm is intended to wake people, an SPL of 75dB(A)is required at the bed head. Generally this will require asounder to be placed within the room.

Where it is not possible to place a sounder within a room, there will be a loss of approximately 20dB(A) through a standarddoor, and 30dB(A) through a fire door (Ref. Figure 1.6).

In open space, as the distance from a sounder doubles, thesound level will be reduced by 6dB(A), as shown in Figure 1.7.

Visual Alarm SignalsVisual Alarm SignalsVisual Alarm SignalsVisual Alarm SignalsVisual Alarm SignalsVisual alarms are normally used only as a supplement toaudible alarms where they are likely to be ineffective, forexample in areas of high background noise levels wherehearing protection is likely to be worn. They can however beused alone where audible warnings are undesirable forexample operating theatres and recording studios.

Visual alarms should be clearly distinguishable from otherwarning lights, preferably red and should flash at a rate of 30to 130 flashes per minute. The recommended mounting heightis above 2.1m, however they should not be mounted closerthan 150mm from the ceiling. They should be positioned sothat any alarm is clearly visible from all locations within thearea protected.

Manual Call PManual Call PManual Call PManual Call PManual Call PointsointsointsointsointsPeople can often still detect a fire long before automatic firedetectors; hence manual call points are important componentsof fire detection systems in occupied buildings to ensure timelyevacuation in the case of fire. All call points are approved toEN54-11, and should be of type A, that is once the frangibleelement is broken or displaced the alarm condition isautomatic.

Manual call points should be mounted on all escape routes, and at all exit points from the floors of a building and to clearair.

In order to provide easy access, call points should be mountedbetween 1.2 and 1.6m from the floor, and should be clearlyvisible and identifiable. The maximum distance anyone shouldhave to travel in order to activate a manual call point is 45m,(Ref. Figure 1.8) unless the building is occupied by peoplehaving limited mobility, or a rapid fire development is likely,in which case the maximum travel distance should be reducedto 20m. Call points should also be sited in close proximity tospecific hazards, for example kitchens or paint spray booths.
