SHEPHERDING

A shepherd's duties demand much more than holding a carved staff and calmly watching the flock. The Shepherd must do everything from ensuring a steady supply of feed, to assisting births, to treating illnesses, to guarding against predator attacks. The shepherd can never leave the sheep untended.

Sheep have been domesticated for then thousand years. In ancient times the Jews valued sheep-especially lambs, the favored animal of sacrifice to God. The scriptures make frequent references to sheep and shepherds, culminating in the images of Jesus, the Good Shepherd and the Lamb sacrificed for our sins.

Some of us are irritated by the thought of ourselves as sheep and disappointed with our shepherds.-namely our Bishops, priests, and deacons. How much better would we be as Jesus' "little flock" if we stuck together and followed the Good Shepherd, and how much stronger would our clergy shepherds be if we not only showed support for their efforts, but also helped them to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit in the flock that they guide?

Nos estamos reuniendo para rezar el rosario desde nuestra casa durante este tiempo especial. Únase a nosotros para honrar a nuestra Santísima Madre. Lunes a viernes a las 6:30 p.m., sábado y domingo después de las 9:00 a.m.

PASTOREAR Las tareas de un pastor exigen mucho mas que llevar un cayado tallado y cuidar ociosamente del rebano. El pastor debe hacerlo todo: desde asegurar el abastecimiento continuo de alimento hasta asistir en los partos, tratar enfermedades y proteger contra los ataques de depredadores. El pastor nunca puede dejar abandonadas a las ovejas. Las ovejas han sido domesticadas por diez mil años. Los judíos de la antigüedad valoraban las ovejas, sobre todo los corderos, como el animal favorito para ofrecer en sacrificio a Dios. Las Escrituras hacen referencias frecuentemente a las ovejas y pastores culminando con las imágenes de Jesús como el Buen Pastor y como el Cordero sacrificado por nuestros pecados. A algunos de nosotros nos causa irritación pensar en nosotros mismos como ovejas y nos desilusionamos con nuestros pastores, o sea, con nuestros obispos, sacerdotes y diáconos. Pero, ?cuando mejor estaríamos como "pequeño rebano" de Jesús si nos mantuviéramos unidos y siguiéramos al Buen Pastor? y ?Cuanto mas dinámicos serian nuestros pastores (el clero) si además de mostrarles apoyo por sus esfuerzos les ayudáramos a escuchar la voz del Espíritu Santo en el rebano que ellos guían? Reflecting on God’s Word

The Shepherd calls his own sheep by name. (Jn.10:3) Good Shepherd Sunday often brings bucolic scenes to mind. Picture a well-groomed shepherd, crook in hand, seated peacefully in lush, green pastures, surrounded by docile sheep. It's beautiful, isn't it? But such an image falls short on two counts. First, shepherd and flock are often dirty and decidedly not peaceful. Second, Jesus called himself a "shepherd" as a rebuke to the Jewish leaders who had just rejected him and cast out a man he had cured of blindness. A true shepherd, Jesus told them, knows his sheep well and leads them with care. And Jesus, the Good Shepherd, goes so far that he "lays down his life for the sheep" (Jn. 10:11) We can read Jesus' words here as a course correction for his opponents, but we can learn something for ourselves as well. For we are all shepherds for God's people in one way or another, we are called to care for his people by following in Jesus' footsteps. Our "flock" may include our children, our parents, or our catechism class. We may be quiet shepherds welcoming a new family at church or mentoring a coworker. But no matter who is on our flock, we need to remember that the sheep belong to Jesus and not to us. He treasures each one of them and wants us to reflect his own love and self-sacrifice. So ask yourself, "How well do I know my sheep? Do I know the names of my coworkers or fellow parishioners? Do I know the challenges my loved ones are facing? Sometimes we are so busy with our own affairs that we overlook the hurt, weariness, or fear in someone right next to us. But following Jesus' example, we can set aside our concerns, "call them by name," and listen to their needs. Perhaps we can even lead them to a place of peace. That's one small way to be a shepherd for God's sheep. The Word among Us -Easter 2020- Publication
