Service of Worship September 13, 2015 at 11:00 am

Celebration of Holy Communion

Welcome! Thank you for joining us today for worship. This morning we celebrate the Eucharist (the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, or Holy Communion) by intinction (dipping the bread into the cup). We also provide a gluten-free alternative. After receiving the elements you may come to the railing to receive a blessing from the pastors.

Prayer of Preparation O gracious and holy God, give us diligence to seek you, wisdom to perceive you, and patience to wait for you. Welcome

Renewing Our Relationship with God

Prayer of Confession Rachel McDonald There are times, O God, when our greatest sin is not what we do but what we fail to do. For those times when we have not spoken up; for those times when we have not acted; for those times when we have not responded: forgive us. Give us courage to name what is wrong when we see it. Give us confidence to do what is hard. Give us grace to reach out when that is frightening or uncomfortable. This we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Announcements TODAY

Leave the service during the last hymn to set up; you're done by about 12:40 pm. (Reminder: the church buys certificates in $25 and $100 amounts at a small discount, and sells them at face value. The proceeds from the sales help fund our Food Pantry, youth mission trips, and mission giving of the church.) Abundance Pantry Report Have you been in the building on a recent Tuesday afternoon? Have you noticed that Fellowship Hall is brimming with people helping, serving and waiting? Abundance Pantry continues to grow, and with it does the need for Forest Hill Church involvement. On the 4th Tuesday of each month we serve lunch to 100 guests. Lunch ministry volunteers are needed in several capacities:

1. Prepare food at home and bring it to be served (see Beth Zych) 2. Helping prepare and/or serve food here (see Beth Zych) 3. Set tables 4. Serve as table host (see Joyce Pope or Margie Glaros)

In addition, at anytime you may:

1. Donate money to the food pantry. 2. Donate old magazines and books for the guests to read while they

wait. 3. Donate non-food items (soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet

paper). Food is distributed every Tuesday. If you wish to help with that, see Paul Jennings. Many of the guests repeatedly state how much they appreciate being able to come here and being treated like real people with families and real needs. Many of them offer to help with the sorting and distribution of food and with the clean-up afterwards.

The Lessons

Ephesians 4: 11-13

The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.

John 1: 35-39

The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!”

The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon.

Next Sunday: Proverbs 31: 10-31; Psalm 1; James 3:13 – 4:3, 7-8a; Mark 9: 30 – 37. Set aside time each day for prayer and study. As you read the lessons for the week, consider how they settle or challenge you?
