Good honest South Dakota based philanthropy, runby tremendously competent staff and supported bya capable and committed board of directors from allfour corners of our great state. After nine years ofboard involvement including my last two asChairman, that is how I would summarize the SouthDakota Community Foundation. The seeds for theorganization were planted 25 years ago, some haveblossomed and some are still in the ground growing. As one looks around the organization, there areplenty of new seeds too. More than likely Mr. BobSutton’s letter is going to recount the significantgrowth of the past year or two and remind us whata wonderful example Paul and Muffy Christen, Daleand Pat Larson and others continue to be for manyof us. There is plenty of evidence that the stage isset for more of the same in the years to come. Asyou contemplate your gifting and estate plans andconsider what legacy you may wish to leave for yourfamily, your community, your alma mater or otherpeople and organizations that are important to you, please know that the South Dakota CommunityFoundation offers a culture of philanthropysupported by a competence in execution that isevidenced by our continued attraction of new dollarsand accounts, our modest administrative structureand our above average investment returns. It’s nevertoo early to get started. Join us in getting started now.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Philanthropy is alive and well in SouthDakota. While dozens of nationalsurveys indicate charitable giving hasdeclined significantly over the pastcouple of years, this is not the case formost South Dakota organizations. Hasit become more important fornonprofits to develop strongerrelationships with donors? Yes. Aredonors taking more time to research thefinancial stability of charities beforemaking contributions? Again, yes. Finally, is the reputation and integrity ofa nonprofit organization moreimportant than ever? Absolutely. Ourdonor base continues to grow, and forthat, we are thankful. This expandedlist of donors is also more sophisticated, and more strategic in their charitablegiving. At the South DakotaCommunity Foundation, the personalrelationships we have with our donorsand understanding their charitablewishes remain critically important.

In May of 2011, we made the publicannouncement of a $20 million giftfrom Paul and Muffy Christen ofHuron, SD. A few months later, theyincreased the total gift to $25 million. These dollars will do incredible thingsacross South Dakota for perpetuity. As

part of their estate plan, the Christenschose the South Dakota CommunityFoundation thanks to a relationshipthat goes back nearly 25 years. Thestrong tie benefits both parties. Whilethe size of the Christen gift isexceptional, we work with thousands ofdonors annually to help them meettheir philanthropic goals. FromLemmon to Alcester and Sisseton toEdgemont, more than 4,000 of youchose to make a difference throughphilanthropy in 2011. These gifts trulychange the landscape in a localcommunity, at a nonprofit organization,or in the life of a scholarship recipient.Large gifts are game-changers, and arecertainly appreciated. However, it isultimately the monthly contributionsfrom communities of all sizes andpeople of all backgrounds that keepphilanthropy thriving in South Dakota. For that, we thank you all.

In 2011, the financial markets took abreather after strong recovery years in2009 and 2010. The South DakotaCommunity Foundation saw a 3.8percent market decline for the calendaryear. This does not mean investmentmanagement strategy was a low priorityduring the year. In fact, it was quite the

opposite. During the summer of 2011,the SDCF Investment Committee putthe final touches on an investmentstrategy that resulted in lower fees andanticipated stronger long-term marketreturns for the portfolio.

As the year drew to a close, the SDCFstaff took time to reflect on 2011.Without question, the Christen LegacyFund announcement was a highlight.Moving into our own office space inlate spring was also near the top of thelist. Saying thanks to longtime boardmembers Jim Means and MarkMickelson was bittersweet. These twoleaders will be missed. Mark’s service asboard chairman brought full circle theMickelson Family legacy within theSouth Dakota Community Foundation.I am certain his late father and many ofhis board colleagues were impressedwith his leadership.

I look forward to seeing you in 2012.

In 2004, a financial advisor from Sioux Falls contacted the South DakotaCommunity Foundation on behalf of a client who resided in Tyndall, SD.The advisor noted that this particular client had some health issues, and

wanted to start a fund to do some charitable giving in his local community. Thefund was established immediately with a significant initial contribution.Unfortunately, the donor lost his battle with cancer in 2005, and through atremendous legacy created through philanthropy, has been changing lives eversince. This is the personal story of Greg Hoch, and his desire to make adifference.

Gregory James Hoch was born in Tyndall, SD on February 7, 1949 and attendedgrade and high school in Tyndall. He enjoyed athletics playing on both thefootball and basketball teams and he excelled academically graduating as thesalutatorian from the class of 1965. He attended South Dakota State Universityand graduated from the College of Pharmacy magna cum laude in 1970.Returning to Tyndall, Greg worked at Hoch Drug with his father William R.

Hoch who had takenover the drugstore in1947 from his fatherJoseph L. Hoch whostarted the businessin 1914. Displayingextraordinarydedication to hishometown, hecontributedgenerously to localand regional charities

during his lifetime and before succumbing to cancer in 2005, Greg created afund to provide 17 annual scholarships of $2,000 each to pharmacy studentsfrom South Dakota at South Dakota State University. In addition, Gregestablished the Hoch Drug Foundation within the South Dakota CommunityFoundation. This fund provides scholarship funding for Bon Homme HighSchool graduates (3-$2,000 awards annually), a yearly gift to Friends of SouthDakota Public Broadcasting, and annual support to the Tyndall Food Pantry.

However, while each of these programs is significant, the fund also generates tensof thousands of dollars annually to primarily benefit entities serving BonHomme County.

Since 2007, when the first distributions were made from the Hoch DrugFoundation, $475,000 has been sent to assist nonprofit organizations and theBon Homme School District. These funds have helped bolster the school’stechnology program, provided free dailybreakfast to students, and built a state-of-the-art wellness and fitnesscenter at the high schoolin Tyndall (pictured.)Organizations servingarea youth, seniorcitizens and even a localpublic library have alsobenefitted from Greg’sphilanthropic spirit. This is in addition to $26,000 in scholarships that have been awarded to BonHomme graduates. In all, the Hoch Drug Foundation has made $501,000 ingrant distributions during its first six years of existence.

South Dakota Community Foundation President Bob Sutton has the honor ofworking with the Hoch Family on their charitable giving. “Greg Hoch had aphilanthropic vision, and it is truly a privilege to work with his sister, Jeanne, tofacilitate this giving in the nonprofit community,” said Sutton. “There are veryfew other funds that have the potential to make an impact like the Hoch DrugFoundation, and we are blessed to have the opportunity to do this good workwith the Hoch Family.”

In early 2010, South Dakota CommunityFoundation President Bob Sutton met with Pauland Muffy Christen of Huron, SD about

establishing another endowment fund within theFoundation. The word another is appropriate, becausePaul and Muffy had already been instrumental instarting funds to benefit charitable organizationsserving Belle Fourche, Custer, Hot Springs, Huron,Sturgis and Wall. In addition, they had givensignificant dollars to the South Dakota CommunityFoundation to specifically assist certain charities, including the Crazy Horse Foundation. Withoutcoming right out and saying it, Sutton was concernedabout going back to the well one too many times.

Paul and Muffy Christen are both graduates ofMitchell High School, and both have college degreesfrom Dakota Wesleyan University. Their career inbusiness started in retail, and soon expanded intocommercial real estate. The Christens are best knownprofessionally for their work in the banking industry, where they operated 18 banks across western SouthDakota. In 2008, they sold their banking interests toFirst Interstate BancSystem of Billings, MT. Paul andMuffy were both directly involved in the operations ofthe banks at the board level. In addition, they havebeen involved with many boards and organizationsover the years, including the South DakotaCommunity Foundation. Knowing them well did notmake asking for such a large sum any easier.

“I met Paul and Muffy for breakfast, and as usual, hada wonderful conversation with them about a variety oftopics. From the weather to the economy to politics inSouth Dakota, we spent a couple of hours just

visiting,” Sutton said. Then, he asked them for $20 million. “Myknees were shaking, and my palms were sweating,” Sutton recalls.“As many times as I had enjoyed the company of the Christens, Istill was not sure what they might say to such a significant request.”Yet, with the class and dignity Paul and Muffy are known for, theycalmly asked a few questions, smiled at each other, and said theywould consider the request.

A couple months later, Sutton received a phone call from theChristens. “They asked me to come to Huron and join them fordinner,” Sutton recalls. Arrangements were made to meet at theirhome prior to going out for a meal. It was at that time, in early Juneof 2010, that Paul and Muffy informed Sutton that they wouldindeed make a $20 million estate gift to the South DakotaCommunity Foundation. “Including the day I was married, and thebirths of our two children, that moment ranks among the mostmemorable times in my life,” said Sutton. “How do you everexpress your gratitude and appreciation for someone giving yourorganization $20 million?”

Over the next several months, paperwork was exchanged anddiscussed, and details about the gift were hammered out. A portionof the gift will be used to challenge other donors to contribute to theFoundation’s unrestricted fund. The earnings from this fund areused to make grants to charitable and nonprofit causes across SouthDakota each year. In addition, other funds will be dedicated tomatching funds for Community Savings Accounts, and to specificcharities serving South Dakota. In May of 2011, with all detailsfinalized, a public announcement was made in Rapid City. Paul andMuffy were joined by their daughters, Rebecca and Katherine, andGovernor Dennis Daugaard was also on hand for the event. It was aperfect way to share the news with all South Dakotans.

In the fall of 2011, Paul Christen contacted the SDCF office andsaid he and Muffy needed to make a change. After a gooddiscussion, he said the documents needed to be changed increasingthe contribution amount to $25 million. From the perspective ofthe South Dakota Community Foundation, changes like that arealways welcome! The impact from such a gift will change the futurefor many charitable organizations, including the South DakotaCommunity Foundation.

In addition to the $25 million gift to the South Dakota CommunityFoundation, Paul and Muffy also gave $5 million to DakotaWesleyan University in 2011. Their $30 million in contributionsfor the year put them 43rd in the United States for philanthropicgiving during the year. The Chronicle of Philanthropy recognizedthem on the “The Philanthropy 50”, a list of top philanthropists inthe nation for 2011. Paul Christen said it best in an interview withthe Rapid City Journal on the day of the public announcement.“Muffy and I feel that we were put on this earth to try and make it alittle better place. I hope that when we are gone, they’ll say that wedid that – made it just a little bit better.” This annual report isdedicated to our friends, Paul and Muffy Christen.

Since its founding, the Beresford Area Foundation has carved out a record ofcommunity giving that few entities can match. It has become a prominentand active supporter of education, economic development and numerous

other projects and programs, donating nearly $75,000 to the quality of life inthis southeastern South Dakota community of 2,005 residents.

Interestingly, the impetus for formingthe foundation came in significant partfrom the education community, according to its president, Mike McGill,a local attorney. “The Beresford AreaFoundation was the result of abrainstorming session with school boardmembers in 1996 with the idea ofcreating a vehicle for people to makegifts to the greater community ofBeresford that would benefit thesurrounding area,” McGill said. “Atthat time there was no way to make agift to benefit the general community tofund programs that would enhance thequality of life in Beresford.” An adhocstudy group reached out to the South

Dakota Community Foundation at the suggestion of then school superintendentJohn Pedersen and a board was established in 1999. “To date we have raisedapproximately $330,000 and have made several grants to local groups andfunded several school related projects,” McGill said.

The focus on local philanthropy has also created two sub funds of the BeresfordArea Foundation -- the Watchdog Education Foundation and the Shanna RaeChristensen Scholarship Foundation. The Watchdog Education Foundationmakes grants that benefit the Beresford Public School system and has developedseveral fund-raising ideas, such as the “Bushels for Education” drive whereagricultural producers can gift corn and beans to the foundation and realize a taxsavings without itemizing deductions. The impact of the foundation’s

philanthropic work has been significant. The Beresford Area Foundation Boardof Directors gifted $18,000 to the Beresford School District to impact studentlearning with 21st century teaching and learning practices. The $18,000 giftprovides 30 iPad 2s for use by the fourth and fifth grade students in theBeresford Elementary School. Additionally, the foundation is presenting achallenge to the community of Beresford to match their gift through donationsso that the district can provide an additional 30 iPad computers to impact 21stcentury teachingand learning in themiddle school, aswell. Thefoundation alsoprovided funds fora needs assessmentsurvey with theUSD School ofBusiness to be usedby communitygroups as they planfor the future.

At present, the board is in the midst of a $60,000 fundraising campaign overthree years to qualify for a $5,000 grant from the Farrar Family CommunityDevelopment Fund. When successful, the Beresford Area Foundation will be in aposition to make an even greater positive impact in its community. “We feel thatthe purpose of the foundation is to create a vehicle where people can make a giftthat enhances the quality of life in Beresford,” McGill said. “We feel this createsan opportunity for grant applicants to craft grant programs that address what isneeded on the local level.”

Rural counties in South Dakota face a number of challenges, including anaging population, healthcare work force shortages and economicdevelopment issues. The Prairie Futures program seeks to address these

issues through an innovative collaboration between the Matson Halverson,Christiansen Hamilton Foundation (MHCH), University of South Dakota, andSanford. The program is currently focusing its efforts in the South Centralregion of South Dakota which consists of Tripp, Jones, Gregory, Mellette, Brule,Buffalo, Lyman, Charles Mix, and Wagner counties. This area also encompassesthe Lower Brule, Crow Creek, and Rose Bud reservations. Unemployment rates

in these areas arehigh while vacancyrates for healthcarepositions in thearea show theongoing need torecruit and retainhealthcareprofessionals.Sanford, MHCHand USD havejoined forces toaddress these issuesthrough the

creation of Prairie Futures and by bringing opportunities for post-secondaryeducational programs in healthcare to these rural areas.

Through this program, students interested in becoming a Registered Nurse canobtain their degree and those who already have nursing degrees are encouraged topursue their MS and Nurse Practitioner certifications. The program is designedto address the unique challenges of non-traditional students in rural areas. Eachstudent is assigned a community coach who provides continuous motivation, helps students address barriers to success and organizes group activities that helpto create a sense of student community. Other support programs includescholarships, student emergency funds, tutoring, transportation, daycare, and

computer access. Co-horts of students consist of both pre-nursing studentscompleting courses that are prerequisites to entering the nursing program andnursing students who have been accepted into the USD school of nursing and arecompleting clinicals at the Sanford hospital in Chamberlain or the WinnerRegional Hospital beginning fall 2013.

The first cohort of pre-nursing students began taking general education coursestoward the Associateof Science degreethrough the Universityof South Dakota inthe fall of 2010. Inthe fall of 2011, thefirst cohort of nursingstudents was acceptedto the USD Nursingprogram. Thesestudents arecompleting theirclinical program atSanford Chamberlainand will graduate in May of 2013. Plans are now underway to expand theclinical program offerings to include the Winner Regional Hospital. PrairieFutures is also working towards increasing Native American coaching efforts andstudent support programs at the Lower Brule and Crow Creek reservations and ispartnering with Capitol University Center (CUC) to offer additional post-secondary educational opportunities that reflect other rural workforcedevelopment needs. The South Dakota Community Foundation awarded PrairieFutures with a $10,000 grant that will make a tremendous impact in expandingthe program’s efforts to include the Winner Regional Hospital and increasingfocus on Native American student coaching.
