Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre

22-27 June 2014

InTroduCTIonThe 30th Australian Turfgrass Conference and

Trade Exhibition is once again focusing on giving delegates a constructive experience at the right

price. Valuable, effective education, useful resources, important networking opportunities and value for money are all key components of the 2014 event.

Successfully trialled in 2013 and being retained in 2014 is the staging of the Golf Championship on Sunday afternoon thus allowing an extra day for education. Two day long workshops will again be offered on Monday 23rd for any fully registered delegate.

The key changes to the 2014 conference are that the President’s Dinner and Awards Ceremony will now be held as a welcome event on Monday evening, with an informal farewell function for all delegates and trade reps being staged on Thursday evening. Friday will see the turf tour coupled with an afternoon golf scramble event where attendees can choose to only attend the morning inspection or stay on for lunch and golf.

AGCSA MondAy WoRkShoP SESSIonSPresented in association with Jacobsen

Managing Turfgrass Under Environmental and Pest Stress Presented by T. karl danneberger. Ph.d. Professor of Turfgrass Science, ohio State University. The identification and management of agronomic stresses are the key to successful golf and sportsturf managment. Turfgrasses grow within an optimum range of conditions whether it is temperature, light or moisture. Outside the optimum range plant stress occurs.

This day long workshop will look at the impact of environmental stress on turfgrass growth and how we can manage the turf during these stress periods

dr karl danneberger Ohio State University

Dr. Karl Danneberger is Professor of Turfgrass Science in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science at the Ohio State University. He received his B.S. degree in Agronomy from Purdue University, his M.S. degree in Horticulture from the University of Illinois and Ph.D. degree inPlant Pathology from Michigan State University.

His research focus at The Ohio State University is in the area of turfgrass ecology and physiology, and in recent times he has investigated how turfgrass plants respond to low light conditions.

During his tenure he has developed mathematical models that predict the occurrence of turfgrass diseases on a global scale and used molecular tools to measure population shifts in turfgrass communities and for cultivar identification.

Dr Karl will give the following talks during the week

l Managing Turfgrass Under Environmental and Pest Stressl Growing Degree Days

Taking the Next Step A panel of ex superintendents will look at the skills necessary to move up the golf course management ladder. Bunker Workshop

Daryl Sellar will be joined by various supers and architects to look at bunkers and the use of bunker liners as cost and time saving tools

Syngenta/Toro Spray Application Technical Workshop

Accurate spray application is an essential element of getting the very best possible result from every fungicide, herbicide, insecticide and growth regulation application. SpraySure is a package that provides turf managers and sprayer operators with the tools and advice to get sprays on target – the right product, at the right time, applied in the optimal way.

david Bancroft-TurnerThe Academy for political intelligence - UK

The Academy runs a wide range of performance improvement workshops globally, in addition to providing critical information for business leaders in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

In today’s increasingly complex work environment, studies have called political intelligence ‘the missing leadership competency’ because the ‘traditional’ skills of leadership are no longer sufficient to guarantee personal and organisational success.

Given this background, what today’s leaders need is not only a keen awareness of their political landscape, but more importantly, the skills to manoeuvre effectively around political minefields using a set of behaviours critical to getting things done in a positive way for all concerned.

During the week David will give the following presentations to help you recognise and deal with the politics around you.

l How to survive, thrive and manage the politics at your Club

l What is politics and why do I have to manage them?l Making the politics a positive experiencel Managing the politics rather than politics managing you

Stephen newportStaging the Cricket World Cup

This talk will give delegates an overview of the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, looking at the logistics and event planning that is going into the event as well as its legacy for Cricket across Australia and New Zealand.

Chief Operating Officer, Stephen Newport is responsible for the operational management and delivery of everything from the actual sporting competition and venue to accommodation and transport so is well placed to give us an insight into this international event.

University of Melbourne Biodiversity Study

Dr’s Livesley, Threlfall and Stork will present the final report on the three year, joint research project aimed at understanding the biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration provided by urban green spaces and golf courses.

This presentation will be followed on Wednesday morning by a workshop that will discuss practical, cost effective ways to improve habitats on golf courses.

dr nick Malajczuk Adding Mycorrhizal to Improve Plant Performance

Dr Nick will discuss the benefits that mycorrhizal fungi plays in soil nutrition and plant development when introduced to the soil.
