30th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B) A Sunday Reflection

Today’s gospel presents us with a different form of prayer, one that is humble and persevering. Bartimaeus sits at the side of the road begging. How long has he been there? Perhaps he has given up hope. Yet, when he hears the commotion and is told that Jesus of Nazareth is passing by, he raises his voice: “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me!” (Mk 10:47). No specifics; only “have pity on me”, which he repeats over and over, even when others try to silence him.

And so Jesus calls him. “What do you want me to do for you?” (10:51). Does the Lord not know? He certainly does, but he wants Bartimaeus—and us—to recognize that we depend on him. He wants to hear us say what we need, not for his sake but for ours. “Master, I want to see” (10:51). Let that be our prayer also. Let us ask the Lord to open the eyes of our heart so that we, like Bartimaeus, may see and follow him on the way. God bless you!

El evangelio de hoy nos presenta una oración diferente, una oración humilde y perseverante. Bartimeo está sentado a la orilla del camino pidiendo limosna. ¿Cuánto hace que está ahí? Tal vez ya ha perdido la esperanza. Y sin embargo, cuando oye el barullo y le dicen que es Jesús de Nazaret que pasa, levanta su voz: “¡Jesús, hijo de David, ten compasión de mi!” (Mc 10, 47). No pide nada específico; solamente “ten compasión de mí”. Y lo sigue repitiendo aunque algunos quieren callarlo.

Hasta que Jesús lo llama. “¿Qué quieres que te haga?” (10, 51). ¿Es que acaso el Señor no lo sabe? Por supuesto que lo sabe, pero quiere que Bartimeo, y nosotros con él, reconozcamos que dependemos de él. Quiere oirnos decir lo que deseamos no porque él necesite saberlo, sino porque nosotros necesitamos decirlo. “Maestro, que yo vea” (10, 51). Que esa sea también nuestra oración. Pidamos al Señor que abra los ojos de nuestro corazón para que, como Bartimeo, veamos y lo sigamos por el camino. Que Dios los bendiga.

Relics The word relic, from the Latin reliquiae, meaning “remains”, refers to the remains of a holy person or something belonging to them. Relics are divided into three “classes.” A first-class relic is all or part of the physical remains of a saint. This could be a piece of bone, a vial of blood, a lock of hair, or even a skull or incorrupt body. A second-class relic is any item that the saint frequently used (clothing, for example). A third-class relic is any item that touches a first or second-class relic.

From the earliest times, the graves of the martyrs were recognized as holy places. Martyrs and other holy dead are in the presence of God, and relics are a point of contact with them, as well as a reminder of the glory promised to us. Relics proclaim Christ’s victory over death, and the miracles that occur due to relics demonstrate His ongoing triumph over the grave. The use of physical objects related to a holy person goes back as far as the Old Testament. Even in the New Testament we see how God uses material objects to bring about healings. In the Gospel of Mark we see how a woman is healed because she touched Jesus’ cloak.

While the Church encourages the practice of venerating relics, it is important to remember that it is not the actual object that imparts healing. God can use a relic of a saint to heal, just like he used his cloak to heal the woman with the hemorrhage. The relic is an instrument for God’s miraculous power.

The Church has defended the veneration of relics since the very beginning and continues to reaffirm this worthy practice. The relics of saints allow us to draw close to these holy men and women of the past and God uses these material objects to impart special graces to faithful souls.

Reliquias LA PALABRA RELIQUIA, del latín reliquiae, “restos”, hace referencia a los restos de un santo o algo de su pertenencia. Las reliquias se dividen en tres clases. Una reliquia de primera clase es todo o parte de los restos del santo, bien un pedazo de hueso, su sangre, un mechón de cabello, hasta una calavera o todo un cuerpo incorrupto. Una reliquia de segunda clase sería cualquier artículo que el santo haya usado con frecuencia (ropa, por ejemplo). Un artículo que haya tocado una reliquia de primera o segunda clase es una reliquia de tercera clase.

Desde los primeros tiempos, las tumbas de los mártires se consideraban lugares santos. Los mártires y los santos están en la presencia de Dios y las reliquias son un punto de contacto con ellos así como un recordatorio de la gloria que se nos ha prometido. Las reliquias proclaman la victoria de Cristo sobre la muerte, y los milagros que ocurren por medio de las reliquias demuestran que esa victoria es duradera. Ya en el Antiguo Testamento se habla de objetos relacionados con personas santas. Y en el Nuevo Testamento vemos como Dios se vale de cosas materiales para sanar, como es el caso de la mujer sanada al tocar el manto de Jesús en el evangelio de San Marcos.

Aunque la Iglesia nos invita a venerar las reliquias, es importante recordar que no es el objecto en sí el que sana. Dios puede usar la reliquia de un santo para sanar, de la misma forma que usó su propio manto para sanar a la mujer con el flujo de sangre. La reliquia es solo un instrumento que demuestra el poder de Dios.

La Iglesia ha defendido la veneración de las reliquias desde su inicio y continúa afirmando esta práctica. Las reliquias de los santos nos permiten acercarnos a estos hombres y mujeres del pasado, y Dios usa estos objetos materiales para impartir gracias especiales a las almas fieles.

The Blesseds /Los Beatos BLESSED COLOMBA GABRIEL (1858-1926) — Janina

Gabriel was born in Ukraine, the daughter of a noble family. Having discerned a call to serve God as a Benedictine nun, she entered the Benedictine monastery in Leopoli, where she was known as Sister Colomba. She conducted programs for the poor, especially for the benefit of young working girls.

In 1900, Colomba moved to Rome, where her spiritual director, the Dominican Blessed Hyacinth Cormier, guided her to start teaching catechism and caring for the sick in Rome’s Prati district. This work inspired Sister Colomba to establish a group of Benedictine oblates and, in 1908, she established a new branch of the Benedictine Order, the Benedictine Sisters of Charity.

During her life, the community grew and she established new houses throughout Italy, in Madagascar, and in Romania. Blessed Colomba Gabriel died in 1926 and was beatified in 1993.

BEATA COLOMBA GABRIEL (1858-1926) — Janina Gabriel nació en Ucrania, hija de una familia noble. Sintió el llamado de servir a Dios y entró en la comunidad benedictina del monasterio de Leopoli, donde recibió el nombre de Hermana Colomba. Dirigió distintos programas para ayudar a los pobres, especialmente a beneficio de jóvenes obreras.

Finally, though it may seem obvious, we should remember that holiness consists in a habitual openness to the transcendent,

expressed in prayer and adoration. The saints are distinguished by a spirit of prayer and a need for communion with God. (147)

Trust-filled prayer is a response of a heart open to encountering God face to face, where all is peaceful and the quiet voice of the Lord can

be heard in the midst of silence. (149)

Prayer of supplication is an expression of a heart that trusts in God and realizes that of itself it can do nothing. The life of God’s faithful people

is marked by constant supplication born of faith-filled love and great confidence. Let us not downplay prayer of petition, which so often calms our hearts and

helps us persevere in hope. (154)

The prayerful reading of God’s word, which is “sweeter than honey” (Ps 119:103) yet a “two-edged sword” (Heb 4:12), enables us to pause and listen to the voice of the Master.

It becomes a lamp for our steps and a light for our path (cf. Ps 119:105).(156)

Kindergarten Butterfly Release

Parking decals are required. Please see Mrs. Pérez in the school office to obtain yours.

Parents, please continue to attend our Sunday Mass and remember to use your blue

envelopes for Mass attendance, even if you donate

online.

Over the past several weeks, the Kindergarten class has been

studying the butterfly life cycle. They observed the tiny little

caterpillars as they ate all day. Then, in amazement, they

watched carefully as the caterpillars turned into chrysalises. The

children waited patiently while inside the chrysalises, small little

miracles of God were occurring. After about a week, out of the

chrysalises appeared the beautiful butterflies! On Thursday, the

Kindergarten released their butterflies in a prayer service

dedicated to our Blessed Mother Mary. They learned that with

God, all things are possible!
