#1 Drink More Water

We've all heard of the importance of drinking plenty of water for good skin, but are you getting enough?

If you live a fairly sedentary lifestyle, then aim for 2 litres of water a day ( gallon for imperial measurement)

If you are active, aim for 4 litres a day.

Water will flush out toxins, and keep your skin hydrated

#2- Reduce Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil Intake

Cut down on your intake of hydrogenated vegetable oil for clear skin.

These fats are found in processed food (anything with a long shelf life) and deep fried fatty foods, mainly fast food.

They are very inflammatory for the body, so you should try to eliminate your intake of these bad fats.

#3- Balance Omega 3 and 6

The historic ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 in human diets was around 1:1 1:2 (give or take)

These days, it is around 1:20, because of hydrogenated vegetable oil, convenience foods, and modern Western diets.

Reduce your consumption of foods high in Omega 6. This includes processed foods such as packaged cookies, fast food, and red meat.

#4- Increase Your Omega 3 Intake

As you decrease your Omega 6 fatty acid intake, it is important to increase your Omega 3 intake to ensure adequate dietary fats.

Start eating more oily fish, leafy green vegetables, and walnuts.

Consider taking a high quality fish oil supplement. Norwegian cod liver oil is very good.

#5 Get Some Sun On Your Face

A bit of UV light and Vitamin D will do a lot to get rid of spots and get your clear skin.

If possible, try to get 10-15 minutes in the sun, once a day, whenever it is sunny.

The key thing here is moderation- avoid getting sun burn, as that is extremely bad for your skin.

A mild tan will also help to hide spots and scars.

#6- Eat Carrots/Drink Carrot Juice

Carrots are very high in beta carotene and Vitamin A. These are essential for healthy and clear skin.

Try eating a couple of carrots a day. Fresh is best, then steamed next.

Even better, juice up 5-6 carrots a few times a week.

The concentrated juice is very good for your skin, and will heal acne fast.

#7- Get More Sleep

Your body simply won't function at its peak, unless you get sufficient sleep to keep it healthy.

If your body is unhealthy, your skin is going to suffer.

Make sure you are getting enough sleep every night. You need to avoid being tired.

What constitutes 'the right amount' of sleep will vary from person-to-person.

#8- Turn Down The Shower Temperature

Excessively hot water will strip your skin of its natural oils and lead to further irritation of the skin. This means a worsening of acne symptoms.

Try turning down the temperature of your shower water a few degrees. Don't freeze, of course (unless you like cold showers- there are some health benefits to these)

Use lukewarm, not near-boiling water when washing your face and skin.

#9- Avoid Harsh Face Scrubbing

Continuing with the theme of skin irritation, it is important to avoid scrubbing your skin too hard when washing/drying it.

Be gentle when washing cleanser off your face with a flannel/face cloth.

Pat your skin dry with a towel- don't rub it.

Avoid using harsh exfoliants (put the sandpaper away please!)

#10- Change Your Pillowcase

A lot of bacteria, grime, dirt, and oil can build up on your pillowcase and bed linen.

You should not sleep on the same pillowcase more than two nights in a row (even if you flip it)

Just get a couple of cheap ones and wash the first while you sleep on the other.

This will help to keep your skin nice and clean.

#11- Eat More Leafy Greens

Popeye was right- spinach is very good for you. Eating more leafy green vegetables such as spinach and silverbeet will do your skin a world of good.

They are high in vitamins and minerals, and help to promote general well-being, which as you should know by now is essential for clear skin.

Broccoli also falls into this category.

#12- Drink Diet Energy Drinks

If you are a fan of energy drinks (even though they aren't exactly the healthiest thing out there) swap from regular to sugarfree/low carb.

This will minimize insulin spiking in your bloodstream, which helps to regulate hormone production.

There is also evidence to suggest that Taurine, found in high quantities in energy drinks, may help cure acne.

#13- Supplement With Zinc

Zinc is an essential mineral that is crucial for your overall health. It is also very important for healthy skin.

Many diets are deficient in zinc, so a zinc supplement will help alleviate this problem.

Leafy green vegetables are also a good source of zinc, but it would pay to try a proper zinc supplement for a while.

#14- Moisturize

If you don't already moisturise your skin, now is the time to start.

Even oily skin will benefit from regular moisturising.

Pick an oil-free product, and use it twice a day (morning and night)

This is absolutely crucial for healthy, acne-free skin.

#15- Stop Touching Your Face

Although it is a bad habit for most of us, touching your face during the day will lead to worse acne.

Your hands may be dirty, which could lead to blocked pores.

More likely is that you will spread p. acnes bacteria from one part of your face to the other.

Avoid the urge to touch your face, unless you have just cleaned your hands.

#16- Be Consistent

When you start a new acne treatment regimen or system, you need to be consistent

Don't try it for a few days or a week, then give up.

Provided what you are doing is not causing any damage to your skin (you should be able to tell if this is the case) then you need to try the treatment for at least a month before giving up.

Patience is key.

#17- Cut Down Sugar Intake

Piling up your body with lots of simple sugars is not a smart move if you want clear skin.

This will lead to insulin spiking, which results in excessive hormone product.

More hormones = more acne (this is quite a generalization here by the way, but it does tend to hold true)

Leave the candy alone!

#18- Eat More Oily Fish

The health benefits of oily fish cannot be understated.

Due to the huge quantities of essential fatty acids in oily fish, you will get a huge health kick from eating this at least a few times a week.

Try to substitute red meat for oily fish- your skin will thank you for doing so. You will be rewarded with a healthier complexion, and fewer pimples.

#19- Use Lemon Juice

If you have a particularly nasty spot that you want to hide up, then consider using lemon juice to do so.

The juice of a freshly squeezed lemon will work like a powerful astringent (while also killing off any bacteria that may cause further spots)

It is cheap, effective, and does not cause excessive drying of the skin (unless you have very sensitive skin, in which case take care)

#20- Use Green Tea

Although it is debatable whether drinking green tea helps with acne, using it topically certainly does.

Boil up some green tea bags, then cool them off in the fridge.

Dab your skin with the bags, wait a few minutes, then wash any residue off.

This will soothe your skin, and help reduce excess oil.

#21- Exfoliate

Although I mentioned earlier that you should avoid being too harsh on your skin, a little bit of exfoliation won't go amiss.

Pick a gentle exfoliant and use it at least twice a week (but no more than four times)

This will help get rid of rough skin, acne scars, and reduce the chance of new breakouts.

#22- Heal Your Skin With Salt

Salt has been a staple of human existence for thousands of years.

Bathing your skin in salt water a couple of times a week will soften up your skin, heal acne, and fade acne scars.

Natural salt water (ie the ocean) is preferable to making your own salt water.

If you have to make your own then use sea salt.

#23- Exercise Regularly

Exercise is crucial for your body as a whole, but a bit of exercise every day will also do wonders for your skin.

Exercise will help to reduce stress levels, and this is very good for your skin (as it results in more even hormone production)

You don't need to go overboard with the exercise, but a few times a week of reasonably intense exercise will do the trick.

#24- Keep Your Skin Clean

Keeping your skin clean is an important way to get rid of acne.

If you have lots of dirt and bacteria on your skin then this creates the perfect breeding ground for pimples.

Cleanse you skin twice a day (morning and night) and as mentioned before, avoid touching it during the day.

#25- Take A Multivitamin

In the frantic, high-paced world in which we live today it can be difficult to ensure you get an adequate intake of vitamins and minerals.

If you are deficient in some form of vitamin or mineral, your skin is probably going to suffer.

For this reason, you should supplement with a quality multivitamin. This alone will have an impact on your skin, and help clear up acne.

#26- Reduce Stress Levels

Stress is very bad for your skin, as it causes hormone imbalances and can result in immune system malfunction.

Try to relax and cut down on stress. This may be difficult to do, but your skin will thank you for it.

If you suffer from severe stress, consult your doctor.

#27- Visualize Clear Skin

This might sound a bit stupid, but there is immense power in visualization

Visualize yourself with healthy, clear, acne-free skin that looks the way you have always wanted it to look.

Spend 20 minutes a day just closing your eyes and visualizing healthy skin.

This will also help reduce stress.

#28- Use Benzoyl Peroxide

If you have a particularly nasty spot that you want to get rid of, consider using benzoyl peroxide cream to kill it off.

You can get this cream from the drug store in 2.5, 5, and 10% concentrations (although 10% might require a prescription in some countries)

Avoid prolonged use of benzoyl peroxide, as it can be very drying to your skin.

#29- Drink Apple Cider Vinegar

It tastes disgusting, but apple cider vinegar does have the benefit of being extremely good for your skin (and your overall health)

Drink 2 tablespoons worth a day, dissolved into water.

Remember to clean your teeth afterwards, as prolonged exposure to ACV is bad for your tooth enamel.

Get organic ACV that has the 'mother' in it.

#30- Try The Sauna

Although many people believe that the sauna/steam room is bad for your skin, sweating out impurities can be quite good for you.

The secret is to ensure that you shower and clean your skin adequately after a sauna, so your pores don't clog up.

It is good for your complexion, and makes you feel quite healthy too.

#31- Conceal Your Spots

Okay, this is technically cheating a bit, but concealing your pimples is the fastest way of getting rid of them!

Consider either a light concealer make-up, or clothing can hide the spot in question.

If you have neckline acne then a high collar or scarf will help hide things.
