Our 20th anniversary celebration kicks off with legendary keyboardist and Chicago native Herbie Hancock in his first appearance on the SCP Jazz series in 10 years. Having enjoyed electro, pop and funk incarnations throughout his career, Hancock could be considered jazz’s true chameleon. Expect a performance that embraces the blend of innovation and soul that makes him one of the most admired artists in jazz history.

“When the conversation ensues about who is carrying on the great tradition of jazz musicianship today…if Joshua Redman’s name does not come up, the conversation is not worth having” (JamBase). The versatile saxophonist appears in a program inspired by his latest album of ballads, Walking Shadows, and by this band of longtime collaborators that bring out the highest level of musicianship in each other. Chicago-born Muhal Richard Abrams opens with his trademark blend of classical, jazz and experimental music.

Renowned soul and gospel singer Mavis Staples’ smouldering vocals are as powerful and compelling as ever, well into the sixth decade of her career. The massive critical acclaim for her 2011 Grammy® Award-winning album You Are Not Alone, which will be followed up by One True Vine in June 2013, makes it clear that Staples “isn’t just a survivor. She’s a great singer who is best when she gets to press onward” (Rolling Stone). One-of-a-kind violinist Regina Carter opens with a celebration of her Alabama roots through joyful Southern music. Carter’s 2010 Symphony Center appearance “illuminated the questing intellect and joyous sensibility of her best work. First-rate practitioners such as Carter remain an endangered species” (Chicago Tribune).
Dynamic drummer, prolific composer and influential bandleader Terri Lyne Carrington leads her Mosaic Project, which brings together some of jazz’s finest artists in a celebration of music and life. The distinguished cast for this performance includes luminous gospel-folk-jazz singer Lizz Wright, piano great Geri Allen, rock veteran and Labelle alumnus Nona Hendryx and trumpeter-flugelhornist Ingrid Jensen. “The Mosaic Project offers, simply, some of the best jazz around” (BBC Music).

Innovative jazz pianist Jason Moran and multifaceted visual artist Theaster Gates will collaborate on a new work giving context to the phrase originally attributed to the Quakers: “speak truth to power.” As envisioned by two of today’s most inventive and brilliant artists, this Symphony Center Presents Jazz series commission will use stories from Chicago’s many eras to illustrate how the power of music and art can unite and transform our city.
