TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FOR 1.1KV GRADE 3½ CORE

70 Sq.mm (UNARMOURED) L.T. PVC CABLE

1. SCOPE:

This specification covers the manufacturing, testing and supply F.O.R. destination

(nearest railway station in case of transport by rail or Store Centre in case of dispatch

by road) anywhere in DVVNL of 1.1KV Grade 3½ Core 70 Sq.mm. (Unarmoured)

power cables.

2. STANDARD:

The cables, to be supplied against this specification, shall conform to the requirements

of latest editions of IS:1554 (Part-I)/88. The design, manufacture and testing of

various cables covered in the following paragraph under this specification shall

comply with the relevant ISS.

3. DESCRIPTION:

3.1 The cable shall be of 1.1KV Grade (3½ Core) having high conductivity, stranded DC

Grade Aluminium conductor, A-type PVC insulated, ST-I Type PVC inner sheathed

(wrapped/extruded) and ST-I type PVC black overall sheathed (extruded) both

conforming to IS-1554 (Part-I)/1988 (with latest amendment thereof).

3.2 The cable shall be suitable for underground use (laid direct in the ground) and for

vertical installations of 1100 Volts, 50 C/S, Three phase neutral earthed system.

3.3 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

3.3.1 CONDUCTOR:

The cable conductor shall be made from high conductivity stranded aluminium wires

to form a complete shaped conductor having a resistance within the specified limits.

The conductor shall also conform to IS:8130/1981 with latest amendment thereof).

3.3.2 INSULATION:

The insulation of the cable shall be extruded type, the manufacturing process of which

shall ensure that insulation is free from voids, The insulation shall withstand

mechanical & thermal stresses under steady state and transient operating conditions.

3.3.3 SHEATH:

Two distinct PVC sheaths i.e. inner and outer, shall be provided in the cable. One or

more layer of proofed tape or plastic tape (non-adhesive) is applied over the laid up

cores as a binder to give a better round shape before inner sheath. The thickness of

such tape shall not be construed as part of the inner sheath. The outer sheathing shall

be designed to afford a high degree of mechanical protection and can withstand

desired temperature. It shall be oil and weather resistant. Acids, alkalies and Saline

solutions shall not have any adverse effect on the PVC sheathing material used.

Antitermite treatment shall be provided in the outer sheath.

Page 18: 3×120 Sq.mm and Single & Multicore LT PVC/XLPE …...rating not exceeding 1100 Volts). OR ii) Single-core and four-core unarmoured aluminium cables IS:1554 (Part-I) (PVC Insulated

3.3.4 CONSTRUCTION:

Cables shall have suitable filler laid up with the conductors to provide a substantially

circular core section before the sheath is applied. Filler shall be suitable for the

operating temperature of the insulation and compatible with the insulation material.

3.3.5 The individual cores & cable shall be identified by different coluring of PVC

insulation which shall conform to IS:1554/(Part-I)/1988 (with latest amendments).

3.3.6 On the outermost sheathing of cable:—

(a) Following should be embossed at the regular interval of two meters length of

cable :—

i) PROPERTY OF DVVNL

ii) NAME OF MANUFACTURER

iii) VOLTAGE GRADE AND SIZE

iv) YEAR OF MANUFACTURE/SPECIFICATION NUMBER

(b) PRINTING OF LENGTH AT EVERY INTERVALE OF ONE METRE BY

WHITE PAINT, (Preferably non erasable sequential mark: shall be done).

3.3.7 Immediately after completion of the electrical tests (during routine/ acceptance tests),

the ends of the cable shall be enclosed by rubber/ PVC caps of wall thickness not less

than 2.5mm and then sealed by non hygroscopic material (the cores being suitably

insulated from the cap). The cap shall be of robust construction and tight fit, and it

shall have the trade mark of the manufacturer embossed thereon.

3.3.8 All materials used in the construction of cable shall be new, unused and of finest

quality.

3.3.9 Workmanship shall be neat, clean and of finest grade.

3.3.10 The normal ratings of the cables under normal condition of installation shall be as

specified in IS:3961(Part-II)/1988 with latest amendment, if any. The rating factors

etc. under different conditions of installation shall also be furnished by the tenderers

so that rating of the cable under various conditions of installation may be determined.

3.4 INSPECTION, TESTING AND TEST CERTIFICATES:

3.4.1 The tenderer shall furnish an authenticated electrostat copy of type test results as

carried out on the same design to provide that the design has successfully passed

through required tests. The type test upto a maximum of 5 years prior to data of tender

opening by recognized test house of repute shall be acceptable.

If successful type test have been carried out on the offered design during last five

years (counted from the date of tender opening), repetition of type tests is not

required.

On the other hand, if the offered design is not type tested during last five years, the

cable shall be subjected to all type tests in accordance with IS:694/1977 and

Page 19: 3×120 Sq.mm and Single & Multicore LT PVC/XLPE …...rating not exceeding 1100 Volts). OR ii) Single-core and four-core unarmoured aluminium cables IS:1554 (Part-I) (PVC Insulated

amendment thereof, at recognised test house of repute. All charges/fee transportation

etc. to conduct these tests shall be borne by contractor.

Regular supply of the material shall commence only after successful type testing &

dispatch authorisation from competent authority.

However the purchaser reserves the right to get cable type tested at any stags during

the currency of contract at his own expenses in any reputed test house. The

transportation and arrangement of testing of sample to test laboratory shall be the

responsibility of the contractor.

3.4.2 In addition to routine test certificate of which shall be sent by the manufacturer with

their offer for inspection, the following acceptance test shall be carried out by the

inspecting officer's of the DVVNL on samples selected at random as per IS:694/1977

with latest amendments.

1. Test on Conductor Reference to ISS
