ADULT PROGRAMS TAKING A BREAKExcept for Tablet Tips and Tricks on Wednesdays and Summer Reading, there will be no Adult Programs at Hackley Library until late fall because the meeting rooms on the lower level will be closed for construction.

The contractors will be working in the space where programs are normally held to add the much-needed, promised ventilation to that hot and stuffy area. They‘ll also be replacing the boiler and the entire library heating system and installing air conditioning throughout the building.

MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE RANCH…Lots of things will be happening in the library’s front yard while the new HVAC (that’s Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) is being installed inside. No programs in the meeting area, but lots of other things will be happening.

MAY-JUNEMAY-JUNE ADULT PROGRAMS

• The Library will become barrier-free at the front door so that everybody can come in the same way! There will still be stairs to the big front doors, but there will also be ramp access on the Webster Street side of the building. People who need ramp access will not be required to enter through the back door any more.

• The ugly carpet on the front steps is going away forever. Originally the carpet was installed because so many people were falling and braking elbows, wrists, ankles and legs on the library’s icy front landings. It was impossible to see black ice on the flecked granite. The carpet wasn’t beautiful but it did keep people upright and uninjured.

• A plaza re-using some of the old stones and a garden area will be installed between the library and the art museum surrounding the flag pole.

• Windows at the library and the Torrent House will be replaced to save energy. The stained glass windows will NOT be replaced, of course. In 2008 those historic stained glass windows were restored and energy efficient insulated glass was installed on the exteriors to protect them.

OPEN FOR BUSINESS AS USUALWe plan to keep the library open regular hours all summer. Children’s programs will continue (see related article), the technology room will be open, and access to all materials for adults from books to dvds will continue on as usual. Regular hours are Monday and Tuesday 12:00 noon - 8:00 pm; Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

. . . EXCEPTWe will have to close the building for just a couple of days, May 14 and 16, while Consumers Energy is here improving the electric power connection so there will be enough juice to run the new HVAC system.

That’s how reference librarians greet library users looking for information at Hackley Library. We

provide that “welcome and a smile”. We help find print items, but also introduce “off web” sources not available through Google, with millions of articles on any subject you can think of. The databases are free to library users through our

library’s membership in our regional cooperative.

Our reference librarians’ undergraduate degrees vary from mathematics to English and everything in between, but we are all generalists prepared to answer any questions. We field questions you wouldn’t believe, and some that don’t even have answers! “Was Hercules a Sagittarius?” “Is it possible to shape shift?” “Have you heard about the exhibit on the ‘Dead Sea Squirrels?”

Among the four librarians on

staff, Susan has an MLS (MA in Information Science) from the University of Washington at Seattle, Jocelyn has an MLIS (Masters of Library and Information Science) from Wayne State University, Lisa has an MLIS from Wayne State (with a second MA in History), and Mary Murphy, Head of Reference and Asst Director, has an MLS from the University of Michigan. We are the faces behind the reference desk, the wizards of the keyboard. Anyone can find things on the internet -- We find the “good” things!
