FEARLESS VARDHAMAN One day Shakrendra, while talking in the assembly of gods, stated, "There is no person more brave, courageous and strong than price Vardhaman." Praising an eight year old boy’s bravery in the assembly of gods was a strange thing. A skeptic god jokingly said that Shakrendra was exaggerating. And he proceeded to test prince Vardhaman. Vardhaman was playing with children of his age in the Jnatkhand jungle. The game was to race to a target tree, climb up, and come down. The first one to reach the ground was the winner. Vardhaman ran the race and was first to climb the tree. Just then the boys on the ground, saw a ferocious cobra slithering up around the trunk of the trunk of the tree and hissing with its raised hood. The boys stated trembling with fear and ran away. From a safe distance they shouted, "Vardhaman, do not come down. There is a black serpent of the tree-trunk. Vardhaman, on his way down saw the snake and also heard the call of his friends. He shouted back, "Be quiet, and don’t be afraid." He jumped down. The snake followed and, hissing, it leapt a Vardhaman. With astonishing agility, the prince caught the snake by its hood and with a jerk threw it away like a piece of rope. After this, the boys started playing another game called Tindushak. This game was also a race to a target tree. The winner was to ride piggy-back on the losers and return to the base. The god who had come to test Vardhaman also joined the group in the disguise of a boy. In the game when Vardhaman won, the god got Vardhaman on his back and started back for the base. On way he transformed himself into a giant. With the prince on his back the god flew in the sky. The boys shouted with fear. Vardhaman, undaunted, hit the giant with his mighty fist. The god cried with pain and landed back on the ground. Vardhaman jumped from his back. The culprit disappeared and in his place appeared a god, who begged Vardhaman’s pardon.

Test by Indra in the School When Vardhaman entered the ninth year of his age, his parents thought that it was time to impart martial and formal education befitting a Kshatriya boy to him. They decided to send him to school. When he went to the school he offered his respects to the teacher just like any other ordinary

student. In spite of having all worldly knowledge since his birth, by offering respect to his teacher, Vardhaman honored the age old traditional ideals. The teacher gave him the first lesson of the alphabets. Vardhaman listened silently. After sometime the teacher called him and asked, "Prince! You are just idling, why don’t you repeat the lesson and memorize it ?" In reply, Vardhaman recited the full alphabets. The teacher was surprised. While he was trying to fathom the surprising capacity of the little boy, an old Brahman, with a Tilak on his forehead, entered the school. The teacher greeted him and offered a seat. The Brahman asked some complex questions on grammar. The teacher could not reply and remained silent looking down in disgust. The Brahman smiled and said, "Acharya! Please do not bother yourself. May be, This new student of yours will solve my problem. If you allow me, I may ask him?" The teacher consented and the old Brahman put the complex questions before Vardhaman. Little Vardhaman, Without hesitating, gave correct and appropriate answers. The teacher stared dumbfounded at the little boy. The Brahman smiled and said, "Acharya! Please don’t feel insulted. You are not aware that the sun of knowledge of this era is present before you as prince Vardhaman. He is the future Bhagavan Mahavir, the omniscient." It is believed that Indra compiled his questions and Vardhaman’s answers into a book named Aindra Vyadaran (the grammar of the Indra).

The Family Jnat clan to which king Siddharth belonged, was same as the Ikshvaku clan to which belonged Bhagavan Rishabhdev. Siddharth and Rishabhdev both also belonged to the Kashyap family. It is a matter of pride for the Ikshvaku clan and Kashyap family that 22 Tirthankars came from the same family. Devi Trishla was the sister of Chetak, the president of the Vaishali republic. Because of the paternal connection with Videh area she was also known as Videhadatta (dinna); her third name was Priyakarini. Vardhaman’s uncle or king Siddharth’s younger brother was Suparshva. Siddhartha’s elder son

Page 6: 31st Issue of UTH-N-YNG by JAY-HO

was Nandivardhan. Nandivardhan’s wife was Jyeshtha. Vardhaman also had a sister named Sudarshana. When and to whom Sudarshana was married is not mentioned anywhere. However, her son Jamali was a famous figure. Although surrounded by unlimited wealth and grandeur, prince Vardhaman’s mind and attitude was completely detached and purified by the fire of discipline. It was like a lotus flower in the pond. The power and glory of the kingdom never attracted him. Even his marriage to Yashoda, daughter of prince Samarvir, was due to the affectionate persuasion and pressure by and from his parents. Yashoda gave birth to a daughter, who was named Priyadarshana. Prince Jamali married Priyadarshana. According to Acharang Sutra, three names of Vardhaman became very famous: 1. Vaddhamane—This name, Vardhaman, was given by his parents. 2. Samane—Saman or Shraman indicates his natural unblemished intellect. 3. Mahavir—This indicates his unique bravery, courage, and tolerance. This name was given by the gods. Another of his names was Sanmati. Because of his purity of thoughts he also became famous by his name. Other names of Bhagavan Mahavir, found in canonical literature are as follows: Jnatputra, Vaishlik, Vir, Ativir, Antya Kashyap, etc.

Death of Parents Detached from all mundane activities and desirous of becoming an ascetic in order to pursue the spiritual goal, Mahavir was keeping the matter pending due to his earlier resolution—"As long as my parents are alive I shall not think of taking Diksha." When Mahavir became 28 years old his parents took the last vow of continued meditation without food. They gradually purified their souls and left their mortal bodies with a serene mental state. After their death Vardhaman told his elder brother, now king Nandivardhan, about his decision to become ascetic. Nandivardhan replied in a choking voice, "Prince! Loss of parents followed by your renunciation; how will I be able to bear these shocks at the same time? Honor my desire and postpone your program for two years." Vardhaman accepted his elder brother’s request and stayed back for two more years. But during this period he lived like an ascetic. Indulging in

spiritual practices with due discipline, he prepared himself for his impending renunciation. Knowing about his resolve for renunciation, gods from the edge of the universe arrived and put forth the formal request, "O benefactor of the world! Your resolve is great. Please proceed on the path of renunciation and propagate religion for the welfare of the world." Prince Vardhaman gave charity three hours everyday for one year. Rich or poor, whoever came to Vardhaman was awarded whatever he desired. At the end of one year Vardhaman was ready for renunciation. The Great Renunciation It was the tenth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Margshirsh. Prince Vardhaman had observed a ritual fast of two days. A palanquin named Chandraprabh was prepared for his great renunciation. Sometime in the afternoon, Vardhaman came out of the palace and climbed into the palanquin. The procession with the palanquin proceeded to Jnatkhand garden in the north-east of Kshatriyakund. The palanquin was placed near an Ashok tree. Vardhaman got down from the palanquin. Thousands of eyes were staring at the prince. His golden body was adorned with a beautiful dress and scintillating ornaments. The next moment he had removed all the ornaments and his dress. The only cover on his body was a piece of cloth resting on his shoulders and provided by Indra. Vardhaman pulled out his hair in five fistfuls. Indra collected his dress, ornaments, and hair in a golden vessel. After this he uttered in his deep resonant voice, "Namo Siddhanam," (I bow to the Siddhas or liberated souls). Then he took the vow of ascetic life, "I take the vow of practicing equanimity all through my life and abandon all intentional sinful activities." Bhagavan Mahavir, accepting the rigorous ascetic vow, resolved, " In my ascetic life I will remain equanimous in all conditions and circumstances. I will tolerate every affliction of predicament caused by man, god, demon or animal equally, no matter how fearsome it is. As long as I do not attain omniscience, I will continue to tread the fire paved path of purity with unflinching and firm steps." A wave of reverence started and thousands of heads bowed with reverence and thousands of the throats uttered in unison, "Victory be to Shraman Mahavir." CONTINUED…

Data Mining: What is Data Mining?

Overview Generally, data mining (sometimes called data or knowledge discovery) is the process of analyzing data from different perspectives and summarizing it into useful information - information

that can be used to increase revenue, cuts costs, or both. Data mining software is one of a number of analytical tools for analyzing data. It allows users to analyze data from many different dimensions or angles, categorize it, and summarize the relationships identified. Technically, data mining is the process of finding correlations or patterns among dozens of fields in large relational databases.

Continuous Innovation

Although data mining is a relatively new term, the technology is not. Companies have used powerful computers to sift through volumes of supermarket scanner data and analyze market research reports for years. However, continuous innovations in computer processing power, disk storage, and statistical software are dramatically increasing the accuracy of analysis while driving down the cost.

Example

For example, one Midwest grocery chain used the data mining capacity of Oracle software to analyze local buying patterns. They discovered that when men bought diapers on Thursdays and Saturdays, they also tended to buy beer. Further analysis showed that these shoppers typically did their weekly grocery shopping on Saturdays. On Thursdays, however, they only bought a few items. The retailer concluded that they purchased the beer to have it available for the upcoming weekend. The grocery chain could use this newly discovered information in various ways to increase revenue. For example, they could move the beer display closer to the diaper display. And, they could make sure beer and diapers were sold at full price on Thursdays.

Data, Information, and Knowledge Data

Data are any facts, numbers, or text that can be processed by a computer. Today, organizations are accumulating vast and growing amounts of data in different formats and different databases. This includes:

• operational or transactional data such as, sales, cost, inventory, payroll, and accounting

• nonoperational data, such as industry sales, forecast data, and macro economic data

• meta data - data about the data itself, such as logical database design or data dictionary definitions

Information The patterns, associations, or relationships among all this data can provide information. For example, analysis of retail point of sale transaction data can yield information on which products are selling and when.

Knowledge

Information can be converted into knowledge about historical patterns and future trends. For example, summary information on retail supermarket sales can be analyzed in light of promotional efforts to provide knowledge of consumer buying behavior. Thus, a manufacturer or retailer could determine which items are most susceptible to promotional efforts.

Data Warehouses

Dramatic advances in data capture, processing power, data transmission, and storage capabilities are enabling organizations to integrate their

various databases into data warehouses. Data warehousing is defined as a process of centralized data management and retrieval. Data warehousing, like data mining, is a relatively new term although the concept itself has been around for years. Data warehousing represents an ideal vision of maintaining a central repository of all organizational data. Centralization of data is needed to maximize user access and analysis. Dramatic technological advances are making this vision a reality for many companies. And, equally dramatic advances in data analysis software are allowing users to access this data freely. The data analysis software is what supports data mining.

What can data mining do? Data mining is primarily used today by companies with a strong consumer focus - retail, financial, communication, and marketing organizations. It enables these companies to determine relationships among "internal" factors such as price, product positioning, or staff skills, and

Page 8: 31st Issue of UTH-N-YNG by JAY-HO

"external" factors such as economic indicators, competition, and customer demographics. And, it enables them to determine the impact on sales, customer satisfaction, and corporate profits. Finally, it enables them to "drill down" into summary information to view detail transactional data. With data mining, a retailer could use point-of-sale records of customer purchases to send targeted promotions based on an individual's purchase history. By mining demographic data from comment or warranty cards, the retailer could develop products and promotions to appeal to specific customer segments. For example, Blockbuster Entertainment mines its video rental history database to recommend rentals to individual customers. American Express can suggest products to its cardholders based on analysis of their monthly expenditures. WalMart is pioneering massive data mining to transform its supplier relationships. WalMart captures point-of-sale transactions from over 2,900 stores in 6 countries and continuously transmits this data to its massive 7.5 terabyte Teradata data warehouse. WalMart allows more than 3,500 suppliers, to access data on their products and perform data analyses. These suppliers use this data to identify customer buying patterns at the store display level. They use this information to manage local store inventory and identify new merchandising opportunities. In 1995, WalMart computers processed over 1 million complex data queries. The National Basketball Association (NBA) is exploring a data mining application that can be used in conjunction with image recordings of basketball games. The Advanced Scout software analyzes the movements of players to help coaches orchestrate plays and strategies. For example, an analysis of the play-by-play sheet of the game played between the New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers on January 6, 1995 reveals that when Mark Price played the Guard position, John Williams attempted four jump shots and made each one! Advanced Scout not only finds this pattern, but explains that it is interesting because it differs considerably from the average shooting percentage of 49.30% for the Cavaliers during that game. By using the NBA universal clock, a coach can automatically bring up the video clips showing each of the jump shots attempted by Williams with Price on the floor, without needing to comb through hours of video footage. Those clips show a very successful pick-and-roll play in which Price

draws the Knick's defense and then finds Williams for an open jump shot. How does data mining work?

While large-scale information

technology has been evolving separate transaction and analytical systems, data mining provides the link between the two. Data mining software analyzes

relationships and patterns in stored transaction data based on open-ended user queries. Several types of analytical software are available: statistical, machine learning, and neural networks. Generally, any of four types of relationships are sought:

• Classes: Stored data is used to locate data in predetermined groups. For example, a restaurant chain could mine customer purchase data to determine when customers visit and what they typically order. This information could be used to increase traffic by having daily specials.

• Clusters: Data items are grouped according to logical relationships or consumer preferences. For example, data can be mined to identify market segments or consumer affinities.

• Associations: Data can be mined to identify associations. The beer-diaper example is an example of associative mining.

• Sequential patterns: Data is mined to anticipate behavior patterns and trends. For example, an outdoor equipment retailer could predict the likelihood of a backpack being purchased based on a consumer's purchase of sleeping bags and hiking shoes.

Data mining consists of five major elements:

• Extract, transform, and load transaction data onto the data warehouse system.

• Store and manage the data in a multidimensional database system.

• Provide data access to business analysts and information technology professionals.

• Analyze the data by application software. • Present the data in a useful format, such as

a graph or table.

MAKE YOUR OWN SOAP

Main ingredients • 900ml water • 295g caustic soda (make sure you buy pure

sodium hydroxide and not something caustic soda based, that might include other ingredients)

• 615g coconut oil (or vegetable fat) • 800ml sunflower oil • 800ml olive oil

For the fragrance

• Essential oils • Other additives (dried herbs, petals and

fruit depending on what soaps you want to make)

For decoration • Pastry cutters • Ribbons • Bows

Protective clothing

• An apron • Rubber gloves • Goggles • A large plastic bucket or stainless steel pot

(don't use cast iron or aluminium) • Plastic containers or moulds (again, don't

use metal containers) When using caustic soda, make sure you follow the manufacturers instructions. Always wear protective clothing and work in a well ventilated room. When mixing, always add caustic soda to cold water, not water to caustic soda. Skill -Easy, but it's not safe for children to make soap, due to the dangers of some of the raw ingredients. Even the most sensible of adults will need to protect themselves with a pinny, rubber gloves and goggles, and be very careful of splashes and spillages. Make sure you get all the measurements correct - the balance between the

acids and alkalis in your mixture has to be spot on, or your soap won't work as soap! Budget

Caustic soda: approx Rs. 150 per 500g; Coconut oil: approx Rs. 500 per kilo (or you can use vegetable fat - stearin - which is cheaper and easier to get hold of); olive oil: approx Rs. 850 per litre; sunflower oil: approx Rs. 450 per litre.

Time

A couple of hours to mix the recipes, 24 hours for the soaps to set, then six weeks for them to dry.

Step One: Mix

The Caustic

Soda In The

Water

Pour 900ml of water into the bucket. Making sure to wear your apron, rubber gloves and goggles, carefully whisk the 295g of caustic soda into the water and watch as the chemical reactions cause it to heat up. (Make sure you add the soda to the water, NOT the other way round.) Once this reaction is happening, it's time to add the oils.

Step Two:

Prepare The

Oils

Jenny buys coconut oil in massive slabs, but you can buy it in specialist

shops and online. An easy alternative is vegetable fat that you can get in the supermarket. Put the 615g of coconut oil into a large pan on a low heat and it will melt very quickly. To this, add 800mls of sunflower oil and the same again of a good quality olive oil. (I’d normally have olive oil on a salad, but it’s been used as a moisturiser on skin for thousands of years. And if it’s good enough for the ancients, then it’s good enough for me.)

Step Three: Mix

Everything

Together When all the oil has melted together, pour it into the bucket with the caustic soda and

water.

Page 10: 31st Issue of UTH-N-YNG by JAY-HO

You'll need to stir it now, for around 40 minutes. You're looking for a change of colour and texture in your mixture. 40 minutes? That'll give you a bit of time to make the big decision on what flavour of soaps you want to make!

Step Four:

Choose Your

Flavours Once the mixture has started to change colour and texture, it's time

to add the lovely bits. The delicious scents come from the essential oils - and there are so many flavours to choose from. From fresh fruity scents such orange or grapefruit to the more Christmassy scents of frankincense or myrrh. I made three flavours: a zingy lime and parsley, a fresh lemongrass, oats, and honey, and a festive cinnamon and orange. So first, I divided my base soap mixture into three mixing bowls. To the first bowl, I added a handful of parsley, then measured 20g of lime essence into the mix. To the second, a handful of porridge oats, a glug of honey and some lemongrass essence. To the third, I added cinnamon and orange essence, as well as some fresh orange zest.

Step Five:

Transfer To

The Moulds

Now you just need to transfer your mixtures to the moulds to set. I’m using

simple plastic tubs that you’ll probably have in your kitchen cupboard - but you can essentially use any manner of plastic containers you like. Once mine were in the moulds, I added some thin slices of (real) orange to my cinnamon and orange soap, which will look lovely and decorative when it sets. Then my tubs of loveliness were wrapped in a blanket for 24 hours to slowly cool down and set.

Step Six: Dry

Out The Soaps

Once the soaps have cooled down and set, take them out the moulds and leave them to

dry in a cupboard for six weeks so the caustic soda dissolves and the soap won’t have any harmful effects on your skin.

Step Seven:

Add The Final

Decorations

Finally, when the six weeks are up, you can divide the soaps up and decorate

them. The blocks can be cut into smaller slices and wrapped with ribbons and bows. I also used a couple of different shaped pastry cutters, which you can buy in any cook shop, to make pretty, shaped soaps which I finished off with dried rosebuds.

Step Eight:

Give Your

Soaps As

Presents Everyone loves to get smellies, so if you're looking to steer

clear of big brands in favour of homespun gifts worth giving, these soaps are perfect.

The city with multi colored illuminations providing a marvelous view at night offer hearty welcome to its tourists. Many high standard hotels and resorts add the enjoyment of the vacation and picnic to its pinnacle in Agra.

Top ten best place to visit in Agra, Uttar

Pradesh (India).

Agra Fort:- The Agra fort which

is known as Lal Qila located in

India. It is a UNESCO listed

world heritage site. Jahan spent

his final days here in captivity. The Agra fort is a

massive magnificent fort made out of red

sandstone. The design of the fort is quite

interesting, there are three massive great

gateways. In total it covers 94 acres some of

which is off limits to public. It truly is a

remarkable place to visit.

Akbar’s Mausoleum:- The

Mausoleum of Akbar the great is

situated about 10 km from Agra,

in Sikandra. Akbar started its construction but it

was completed by his son Jahangir in 1605. The

architecture of the mausoleum is very interesting

as it is a good example of mixture of the use of

sandstone together with marble. The mausoleum

is flanked by a beautiful garden. The unique

square design of the main tomb remain unrivalled

by all other Mughal buildings. Mausoleum is open

from sunrise to sunset.

Chini-ka-Rauza:- Chini ka rauza,

Agra is considered to be the one of

the masterpiece of glazed-tile

decoration. This mausoleum is in

fact a classic example of the

Persian influence on Mughal architeture of that

period. Parts of the walls are still covered with the

colored enamel tiles (Chini) which gave the tomb

its name. On the top of the dome you can see

some Quranic texts inscribed on it. This really is a

magnificent holiday site to visit in every season.

Itimad-ud-Daulah:- This Tomb

is a Mughal mausoleum in the

marble. The tomb is also justly famous for the

glasses, Pietra dura (stone inlay), whine glasses

and an amazing variety of geometrical arabesque.

The whole structure gives the impression of an

enlarged precous abject.

Jama Masjid:- The Jama Masjid in

Agra is perhaps the largest mosque

in India and it is also known as Jami

Masjid. Jami Masjid was built by

the mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan.

The Masjid is a quadrangular building of brick

and stone encircled by a ring of terraced roofed

and double storied buildings. The main prayer hall

is used on most days by worshippers and is made

up of high cusped arches and marble domes. On

Fridays and other holydays the courtyard is filled

with devotees who come in for “Namaaz”.

Mehtab Bagh:- Mehtab Bagh

which means the “Moon light

Page 12: 31st Issue of UTH-N-YNG by JAY-HO

garden” was built on the northern side of the Taj

Mahal complex and lies across the Yamuna River.

It is also known as “Chaar Bagh”. The significant

attraction of Mehtab Bagh is Taj Mahal it self.

The place has been enriched with plants and at

present more than 40 varities of plants bloom in

the garden. Your visit to the beautiful garden will

mark you treat your eyes far away from the hustle

bustle of the busy town.

Taj Nature Park:- Taj Nature Park

follow the stone pathways for a

pleasant natural ramble among

birds and butterflies. This is one of

India’s most beautiful national

parks. The dramatic landscape features tropical

forests and woodlands, and steep rocky hills with

flat grasslands in the velleys below. The park is

also home to a large variety of mammals’ leopard,

deer, jackal, fox and wild dog.

Taj Mahal:- Taj Mahal

is the most beautiful

building in the world. In

1631 the emperor Shah

Jahan built Taj Mahal in

memory of his beloved

wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth. The

white marble mausoleum at Agra has become the

monument of a man’s love for women. Many

architects have rated it as the most perfect of all

buildings standing on earth. Three artists designed

it a Persian, an Italian, and a French. But the

design is completely Mohammedan. It is one of

the “seven wonders of the world” and it attracts

record 3-4 million tourists annually. Today, Taj

Mahal tour package is very popular amongst both

the domestic as well as international visitors.

Fatehpur Sikri:- Fathpur Sikri

build during the second half of the

16th century by the emperor

Akbar. Fateh pur sikri (the city of

victory) was the capital of the

mughal Empire for only some 10 years. This is a

complex of monuments and temples, all in

uniform architectural style. Today, it is a ghost

town, but still retains its old charm and beauty.

Another very interesting feature at Fathpur Sikri is

the mammoth chessboard, where human figures

were used as chess pieces and moved at the

emperor’s will.

Guru Ka Taal Or Tal:- As the

point of discussion is that some

Agra attractions enjoy historical,

and religious significance so the

mention of Guru Ka Taal becomes a must. The

Agra Guru Ka Taal is the most revered and

venerated place for the Sikhs dwelling in Agra. It

is a holy place of worship for the Sikh. Guru Ka

Taal in Agra is very popular tourist attraction. It is

kept open from dawn to dusk everyday. This

DEHYDRATION – THE

ENEMY DURING SUMMER

What is dehydration?

Water is a critical element of the body, and keeping the body adequately hydrated is a must to allow the body to

function. Up to 75% of the body's weight is made up of water. Most of the water is found within the cells of the body (intracellular space). The rest is found in the extracellular space, which consists of the blood vessels (intravascular space) and the spaces between cells (interstitial space). Dehydration occurs when the amount of water leaving the body is greater than the amount being taken in. The body is very dynamic and always changing. This is especially true with water in the body. We lose water routinely when we: • breathe and humidified air leaves the body (this

can be seen on a cold day when you can see your breath in the air, which is just water that has been exhaled);

• sweat to cool the body; and • eliminate waste by urinating or having a bowel

movement. In a normal day, a person has to drink a significant amount of water to replace this routine loss. The formula for daily fluid requirements depends upon an individual's weight. Normally, fluid and weight are calculated using the metric system; however, below is the approximation in imperial (American) units.

Body weight Daily fluid requirements

WHAT CAUSES DEHYDRATION

Dehydration occurs because there is too much water lost, not enough water taken in, or most commonly, a combination of the two. • Diarrhea: Diarrhea is the most common

reason for a person to lose excess amounts of

water. A significant amount of water can be lost with each bowel movement. Worldwide, more than four million children die each year because of dehydration from diarrhea.

• Vomiting: Vomiting can also be a cause of fluid loss. Not only can an individual lose fluid in the vomitus, but it may be difficult to replace water by drinking because of that same nausea and vomiting.

• Sweat: The body can lose significant amounts of water in the form of sweat when it tries to cool itself. Whether the body temperature is increased because of working or exercising in a hot environment or because a fever is present due to an infection; the body uses water in the form of sweat to cool itself. Depending upon weather conditions, a brisk walk may generate up to 16 ounces of sweat (a pound of water) an hour to allow body cooling, and that water needs to be replaced by the thirst mechanism signaling the person to drink fluids.

• Diabetes: In people with diabetes, elevated blood sugar levels cause sugar to spill into the urine and water then follows, which may cause significant dehydration. For this reason, frequent urination and excessive thirst are among the early symptoms of diabetes.

• Burns: The skin acts as a protective barrier for the body and is also responsible for regulating fluid loss. Burn victims become dehydrated because the damaged skin cannot prevent fluid from seeping out of the body. Other inflammatory diseases of the skin such as toxic epidermal necrolysis, also may be associated with significant fluid loss.

• Inability to drink fluids: The inability to drink adequately is the other potential cause of dehydration. Whether it is the lack of availability of water, intense nausea with or without vomiting, or the lack of strength to drink, this, coupled with routine or extraordinary water losses can compound the degree of dehydration.

SYMPTOMS OF DEHYDRATION

Page 14: 31st Issue of UTH-N-YNG by JAY-HO

The body's initial responses to dehydration are thirst to increase water intake, and decreased urine output to try to conserve water loss. The urine will become concentrated and more yellow in color. As the level of water loss increases, more symptoms can become apparent. The following are further signs and symptoms of dehydration. • Dry mouth • The eyes stop making tears • Sweating may stop • Muscle cramps • Nausea and vomiting • Heart palpitations • Lightheadedness (especially when standing) • Weakness • Decreased urine output

CAN DEHYDRATION BE PREVENTED? • Environment:Dehydration due to the weather

is a preventable condition. If possible, activities should not be scheduled in the heat of the day. If they are, adequate

fluids should be available, and cooler, shaded areas should be used if possible. Of course, people should be monitored to make certain they are safe. Those working in hot environments need to take care to rehydrate often. In heat waves, it is important to routinely check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those that do not have air conditioning.

• Environment: People exercising and working in a hot environment need to drink adequate amounts of water. People can become dehydrated in

the ocean, lakes, or pools if the water and and environmental temperatures are warm enough.

• Age: The young and elderly are most at risk because of poor temperature regulation systems. During heat waves, attempts should be made to check on the elderly in their homes. During the Chicago heat

wave of 1995, more than 600 people died in their homes from heat exposure.

• Heat related conditions: Know the signs and symptoms of heat cramps, heat rash, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Preventing dehydration is one step to avoid these conditions.

Dehydration at A Glance

• The body needs water to function. • Dehydration occurs when water intake is less

than water loss. • Symptoms range from mild to life-threatening. • The young and the elderly are especially

susceptible to dehydration.

CLOUD STORAGE FILE

SHARING EXPLAINED

Thanks to our reader and friend Chintan Visharia for suggesting us the topic with a brief description. Sharing files from your cloud

account has become a very common feature. This can take the form sharing via email addresses, sharing via social networks, sharing public URL's, or with collaborators using network accounts are some of the ways people send files to each other. Many people who use cloud storage for sharing find it beneficial. This is because they already have their important files backed up to the server and they can easily share a file with someone without having to attach it in an email, upload it to an FTP or burn it to a CD/DVD. It speeds up the file sending process by a lot.

WAYS TO SHARE FILES WITH CLOUD

STORAGE

Common Types of Sharing • Email Sharing - Share files using email

addresses. When a recipient gets the email, they can open the link to a secure area where they can download the files. Some cloud providers require the recipients have an account.

• Social Network Sharing - Posts a link on your social network's profile that directs people back to the shared file. It relies on your social network's privacy settings to be set to what you want and is shared to friends/followers that you have already approved.

• Public URL Sharing - Creates a URL that links directly to your shared files. Anyone with the link can access these files, which means it's up to the user to send out the URL responsibly.

• Pre-registered User Sharing - Requires that everyone is registered under a network of accounts, usually for business accounts. Teams can collaborate using the providers interface and makes it easy to share files between connected users. Privacy and

permissions can be set within the cloud software.

EMAIL SHARING

Sharing via email is a very common way to share files with others. The process starts by finding the files to share, adding the contact's email address and clicking share. The software emails your contact a link to the shared files. Sometimes your recipients will have to sign up for an account with the cloud service. This takes a little extra time, but it adds a layer of privacy and security.

Pros • Better security • Send to as many or few people as you

want • Private

Cons • Some providers require recipients to have

accounts • Not as quick and easy as sharing URL

Email Sharing Example Using SugarSync As an example, here is how file sharing works with SugarSync. Locate the files/folders you want to share, press 'Share' next to them, enter in emails separated by commas, and then click send. They will now be sent an email containing a link to the shared files or folders. A free account to view the shared items.

1. Log into your account 2. While in the "Files" area click "Share"

next to the file or folder you want to share 3. Enter in the emails you want to share the

file with (Or, you can import contacts using Gmail, Yahoo or SugarSync contacts)

4. Click "Send" 5. The recipient gets an email with

instructions on how to access shared file

SOCIAL SHARING

Social sharing is the process of posting shared content to your social networking profile (such as

Page 16: 31st Issue of UTH-N-YNG by JAY-HO

Facebook or Twitter) for your friends and followers to see. The reason people like sharing on social networks is because it's quick and easy. One benefit of social network sharing is that you already have an established list of friends and followers. Which you do not have to sort through a long list of email addresses to create a share list. Also with social sharing, your shared files are public which means you do not have to create a user account.

Pros • Easy to share established list of

friends/followers • No recipients do not have to set up

accounts (Usually) Cons

• Privacy settings are different on each of the social networks

Social Sharing Example Using IDriveSync As an example, IDriveSync works really well with social networks. They have an integrated sharing tool that can share to Facebook as a post. This can be helpful to those who need a safe place to store files and want to share out some of them publicly. Since the share button is built into the interface it is pretty easy to share files to social networks.

1. Log into your account 2. Locate the file you want to share 3. Click the arrow on the right hand of the

file 4. Click, "Share" 5. After you login using the dialogue box,

your content will be posted on Facebook or where ever.

*Note you can also Pin to Pinterest, Share to LinkedIn and Tweet on Twitter.

PUBLIC URL SHARING

Files stored on the cloud can usually be shared using a Public URL. Public URL's are a direct link to your file or folder. Usually the service provider will have a user interface that any user can access on their website. This allows recipients to easily access files you send them. With a link, you can post it any where making it extremely versatile. It's also easy to use and, since it's public, anyone can access it.

Pros • Very flexible sharing • Easy to use • Anyone can access

Cons • Once shared, anyone who has the link can

download your files

Public URL Sharing Example Dropbox Dropbox is one of the syncing providers that does this well. You can share any file that has been uploaded to your account. While viewing your files, use the 'Share Like' icon to start the process. The result is that recipients can quickly view and download files.

1. Login to your Dropbox account 2. Click to open the folder you want to share 3. Click the chain-link icon to share link 4. This will open a dialogue box like you see

above 5. Click, "Copy link t o this page" to get the

URL 6. The URL is now copied to your clipboard,

type CTRL+V to paste the URL anywhere. *Note that everything within this folder will now be able to be seen by anyone. Hence the name, Public URL. If you do not want to share the folders publicly, you can click, "Share Folder Options" in the tool bar to share using other options.

Dropbox Dropbox gives you 2GB of free storage but you can earn up to an additional 16GB by referring friends to open up accounts. SkyDrive SkyDrive by Microsoft gives you 7GB of free storage with access to your data wherever you can connect to the internet by running on your computer, Smartphone, or tablet. SugarSync SugarSync is similar to Dropbox but offers a few extras, such as encrypted servers and enabling file sync between multiple computers. SugarSync provides 5GB of storage for free

Google Drive You get 5GB free, but if you need additional storage space you can access 25GB for $2.49/month or 100GB for $4.99/month.

iCloud Apple iCloud has become a popular storage option; it offers 5GB of storage for free

FIT FOR THE PRIME MINISTER,

ONLY IF HE HAD THE POWER !

Dr. Manmohan Singh is the 14th and current Prime Minister of the Republic of India. He was born on Monday, 26 September 1932. He is the first Sikh to hold the post of Prime Minister in India. He is the first Indian Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to return to power after

completing a full five-year term. Manmohan Singh is also the 12th Prime Minister under an Indian National Congress Government. Manmohan Singh Biography

Manmohan Singh was born on Monday, September 26, 1932 at Gah in the Punjab before the partition of the subcontinent. He was born to Gurmukh Singh and Amrit Kaur on 26 September 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now in Chakwal District, Pakistan), British India, into a Sikh family. He lost his mother when he was very young, and he was raised by his paternal grandmother, to whom he was very close. He was a hard working student who studied by candlelight, as his village did not have electricity. After the Partition of India, he migrated to Amritsar, India, where he studied at Hindu College. He attended Punjab University, Chandigarh studying Economics and attaining his bachelor's and master's degrees in 1952 and 1954 respectively, standing first throughout his academic career. He went on to read for the Economics Tripos at Cambridge as a member of St John's College. He is the 14th and current (till this biography has written) Prime Minister of the Republic of India. He is a famous head of state from India of Sikh religion. Dr. Mahmohan Singh graduated from Punjab University in 1948 and attended Cambridge University in Britain, earning a First Class Honours degree in economics in 1957. He continued with his graduate studies at Oxford University and achieved a doctorate in economics in 1962. He returned to India, lecturing at Punjab University and at the Delhi School of Economics. In 1971 he joined the Indian civil service as an economic adviser in the commerce ministry. His

talents were quickly rewarded, and he was appointed chief economic adviser in the ministry of finance in 1972. Singh made the transition from bureaucrat to politician in 1991 when he was appointed a member of India's upper house of parliament (the Rajya Sabha). While a member of the upper house between 1991 and 1996, he also became the finance minister in Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao's government. With Rao's support, he initiated successful economic reforms aimed at slashing India's infamous red tape, enhancing productivity, and liberalizing the economy. His goals were to end protectionism and open the Indian economy to foreign investment so that India would evolve to a mixed economy saving it from the verge of bankruptcy. As a result the economy became reinvigorated, inflation was controlled, and Indian industry began to show signs of strength.

An economist by profession, Singh was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985, the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of India from 1985 to 1987 and the Finance Minister of India from 1991 to 1996. He is

also a Rajya Sabha member from Assam, currently serving his fourth term. Dr. Manmohan Singh previously carried out economic reforms in India during his tenure as the Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996. These reforms resulted in the end of the Licence Raj system, helping to open the Indian economy to greater international trade and investment. Eminent writer Khushwant Singh lauded Mr. Singh as the best Prime Minister India has had; even rating him higher than Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. He mentioned of an incident in his book Absolute Khushwant: The Low-Down on Life, Death and Most things In-between where after losing the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, Mr.Singh immediately returned Rs 2 lakh he had borrowed from the writer for hiring taxis. Terming him as the best example of integrity, Mr. Khushwant Singh stated, "When people talk of integrity, I say the best example is

Page 20: 31st Issue of UTH-N-YNG by JAY-HO

the man who occupies the country's highest office." Political Career of Dr. Manmohan Singh

Singh's political career was turbulent because he was neither charismatic nor a traditional politician. He lost the only time he contested a

parliamentary election for the lower house (Lok Sabha). From 1998

to 2004 he was leader of the opposition but became prime minister in May 2004 when the Congress Party won a coalition majority in the national election. This is because Sonia Gandhi turned down the prime ministership. Singh became India's first Sikh prime minister. This is impressive due to the troubled relationship between India's Sikhs and the Hindu majority during the 1980s. (In 1984 government forces stormed the sacred Sikh Golden Temple in Amritsar to root out Sikh militants. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's Sikh bodyguards avenged this act by assassinating her months later.) Although governing such a diverse nation as India with a coalition is difficult, during his first two years in office Singh achieved a measure of success. The Indian economy continued to grow at an impressive rate. The fractured relationship with Pakistan showed signs of slowly improving, although the deeper issue of who controls Kashmir remained unresolved. Equally as important, political and trade relations with the United States improved considerably. The government also spearheaded a massive project aimed at eradicating rural poverty. In large part due to Manmohan Singh's reforms and pragmatic managerial style, India's economy continued to expand and under his government, showed signs of emerging as a global economic power. Singh was always an unlikely politician, who was routed in a parliamentary election in 1999. In fact, he has never won an election and sits in the upper house. Politically, Manmohan Singh is the classic example of the stateless politician.

After the Indian National Congress won the 2009 general elections, Singh was reappointed as the Prime Minister of India on May 22, 2009, making him the first Indian Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to return to power after completing a full five-year term before this over 40 years ago. In 2010, TIME magazine listed him among the 100 most influential people in the world. Newsweek magazine also lists him as one of 10 world leaders who have won respect and was described as the leader other leaders love. Dr. Manmohan Singh stayed with the Congress Party despite continuous marginalization and defeats in the elections of 1996, 1998 and 1999. He did not join the rebels in a major split which occurred in 1999, when many major Congress leaders objected to Sonia Gandhi's rise as Congress President and leader of the opposition. Being touted as the Congress choice for the PM's job, she became a target for nationalists who objected to her Italian birth. It seemed that a party which turned to old links to the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and a foreigner for political leadership had no future or potential to look forward to. But Singh continued as a prominent leader, rising in confidence and helping to revamp the party's platform and organization.

The Congress alliance won a surprisingly high number of seats in the Parliamentary elections of 2004, owing to a nationwide disenchantment of millions of poorer citizens with the BJP's focus on the surging middle-class, and also its dismal record in handling religious tensions. The Left Front decided to support a Congress alliance government from outside in order to keep the "communal forces" out of power. Sonia Gandhi was elected leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party and was expected to become the Prime Minister but in a surprise move, declined to accept

Page 21: 31st Issue of UTH-N-YNG by JAY-HO

the post and instead nominated Dr. Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister. There were protests within the Congress about her refusal but eventually people accepted her decision and the allies too accepted her choice. Singh secured the nomination for prime minister on May 19, 2004 when President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam officially asked him to form a government. Although most expected him to head the Finance Ministry himself, he did not do so. His political mentor Sonia Gandhi retains absolute control over the MPs and organization of the Congress Party. His appointment is notable as it comes 20 years after India witnessed significant tensions between the Indian central government and the Punjabi Sikh community. Facts About Manmohan Singh

Being born on Sep 26, Manmohan Singh is a Libra. He joined the prime minister's office on 22 May 2004. He is the 14th prime minister of India. He was the Deputy Chairperson of the Planning Commission from 15 January 1985 to 31 August 1987. He was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 15 September 1982 to 15 January 1985. REVIEW – SHOOTOUT AT WADALA SHOOTOUT AT WADALA narrates the story of Manya [John Abraham], who gets implicated in a murder case and is sentenced to life imprisonment. Manya flees the prison, returns to Mumbai and forms his gang. The cops launch Operation Manya Surve to curb his dominance… Besides encapsulating the rise and fall of Manya Surve, SHOOTOUT AT WADALA talks about the lesser-known aspect of his life: His love interest. And it is this attribute in Manya's personality that sets it apart from other gangster movies. It brings to the fore the humane aspect of a gangster who sent a chill down the spine in his prime. While Gupta is synonymous with depicting machismo with flourish, tender moments such as these have been neglected in his movies, post HAMESHAA [Saif, Kajol]. But the sensitivity and ease with which Gupta balances the explosive and hot-tempered attitude of the gangster [with his rivals] and the soft and affectionate persona [with his lady love] gives the film that extra edge. The second half of the film and more specifically, the final moments leave you awe-struck. The screenwriting [Sanjay Gupta, Abhijeet Deshpande, Sanjay Bhatia] is watertight. Although it takes time to settle down, the solid writing in the second hour keeps you on the edge. In fact, the turn of events in the second half takes the film to its zenith. A large chunk of SHOOTOUT AT WADALA is devoted to high-voltage action sequences. Unlike some recent films, the action here is raw and real, reminiscent of the films of the 1980s. The action -- brutal, unrepressed and energetic -- is clearly a notch above the recent films that depict the hero bashing up rogues like we swat flies and mosquitoes. Unquestionably, it's one of the highpoints of the movie [Tinu Verma]. Since the gangster flick is set in the 1970s and 1980s, the soundtrack [Anu Malik, Anand Raaj Anand, Meet Brothers Anjaan, Mustafa Zahid] is reminiscent of the music of that era. However, it's the items songs that catch your attention. 'Babli' [filmed on Priyanka Chopra], 'Laila' [filmed on Sunny Leone] and 'Aala Re Aala' [filmed on Sophie Choudry] are foot-tapping and the presence of curvaceous women only acts as an eye candy. Editing [Bunty Nagi] is skillful. Despite a run time of more than 2.30 hours, you never lose the narrative for a second. Background score

[Amar Mohile] blends with the on-screen happenings wonderfully. Cinematography [Sameer Arya; additional DoP: Sanjay F. Gupta] is top notch, with the bygone era being depicted with flourish. Gupta is known for extracting inspiring performances! Leading the pack is, without doubt, John Abraham, who makes the character of Manya Surve come alive on screen. It's a drastic transition for John as he has several heavy-duty scenes to perform and the actor does the switch from an action hero to an able performer with much delight. Call this a coincidence, whenever John has been cast in a negative role, his performance has always stood out [ZINDA, DHOOM and RACE 2]. Now SHOOTOUT AT WADALA will prove to be the talking point. Anil Kapoor reinvents himself yet again. So good is the veteran that you never get enough of him. Watch him lock horns with varied actors in the film and you realize, he's one of those rare actors who cannot be overpowered. Ever. Manoj Bajpayee glides into his character effortlessly and delivers a magnificent performance. Tusshar Kapoor springs a big surprise, making you believe in the character he's portraying on screen. He adds tremendous credence to his character. Sonu Sood is electrifying. In the post-interval portions specifically, Sonu gets some meaty scenes to sink his teeth into and he grabs the opportunity instantly. Ronit Roy is another actor to watch out for. He makes his presence felt in a noteworthy role. Mahesh Manjrekar doesn't get much scope, while Akbar Khan, Ranjeet and Jackie Shroff appear in cameos. Kangna delivers a wonderful performance [especially towards the final moments] and stands her own despite the presence of actors with challenging characters. Sanjeev Chadha is effectual in his film debut. Siddhanth Kapoor is confident in his first outing as an actor. Karan Patel makes his presence felt. Arif Zakaria is alright. Raju Mavani is perfect and so is Raju Kher. On the whole, SHOOTOUT AT WADALA is a fire-brand, paisa vasool entertainer. Brutal and electrifying, it is one of those theatre-going experiences that has a plot, is packaged well and has content [drama, action, dialogue, songs, performances] that works big time with the avid moviegoer. Sanjay Gupta delivers a solid punch!

Put that energy to good use; transform an area of your life or maybe an area in your home. Shine some light on a subject to see anew. Capricorn - It isn' t a matter of "when one door closes another one opens" with you. It is more like "one door is closing, so I try to keep it propped open while I check out the two or three new doors to see which opens into the best room". You might not have that luxery now. Be practical , decide quickly and move forward. Aquarius - HC 3 ,4,5 put your best foot forward. If you've over extended yourself in any way the last 11 mos, you've got May to reel yourself back in without feeling like a fish caught on a line. People in authority or influence will accept a forthright approach. Let your Yes be Yes and your No be No. Pisces - Sailors make small changes with the rudder to go in a different direction. You can make the same type of small changes to land at an entirely different destination. HC 5,6,7 determine if you want to stay the course or make a few adjustments. Then make the effort to get where you want to be.
