a star is BornOriginally many ambulances were recognized by an orange cross on a squarebackground of reflectorized white

A star was born after a 1973 complaint by the American National Red Cross that the orange cross on a white background too closely resembled their logo (the red cross on a white background)

The Star of Life was designed and created by Leo R. Schwartz, Chief of the EMSBranch, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

The blue, six-pointed star outlined in white, featuring the rod of Asclepius in the center, represents the six phases of an EMS response

The “Star” was trademarked on February 1, 1977 with the Commissioner of Patentsand Trademarks in the name of the NHTSA (registration #1058022)

After the trademark expired in 1997, the Star of Life was “given” to the NationalRegistry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for use as the EmergencyMedical Technicians (EMT) logo
