Activity 5.1: Identify and enhance adoption of farmer and market preferred chickpea cultivars in water-limited areas

•  FPVS have been completed and 3-4 farmer and market preferred varieties identified at each location

•  NPT trials will be conducted on two desi (ICCV 97105, ICCV 00108) and one kabuli (ICCV 00305) lines in Tanzania and on two desi (ICCV 97105, ICCV 00108) and two kabuli (ICCV 92318, ICCV 00305) lines in Kenya

•  Activities on breeder seed production will be carried out under Objective 8

Activity 5.2: Develop improved chickpea germplasm with enhanced tolerance to drought, resistance to fusarium wilt and market preferred seed traits

•  Over 700 desi and 400 kabuli breeding lines will be evaluated for phenology, grain yield, seed traits and resistance to fusarium wilt at ICRISAT, Patancheru.

•  135 advanced breeding lines (80 desi + 55 kabuli), ICSN-Desi and ICSN-Kabuli will be evaluated by NARS partners in India (3 locations) and ESA (2 locations)

• Evaluation of over 250 progenies derived from crosses between popular cultivars (ICCC 37, JG 11, JG 130) and drought tolerant germplasm (ICC 4958 and ICC 8261) at ICRISAT, Patancheru.

Marker-assisted recurrent selection (MARS) using good-by-good crosses for improving

yield under moisture stress conditions (from TL-I)

Enhance resistance to pod borer by combining different mechanisms of resistance from the cultivated and the wild species

• Promising F6 progenies from C. arietinum (ICC 506) x C. reticulatum (IG 72933) will be further evaluated for resistance to pod borer.

• Seven C. arietinum (JG 130, JAKI 9218, JG 11, KAK 2, JGK 1, ICC 17109, ICC 506) x C. reticulatum (IG 72933) crosses will be advanced to F3.

Improving the availability of quality seed and linking formal and informal seed sectors

•  About 150 t breeder seed and 600 t other classes of seed (foundation, certified and TL) will be produced by project partners

•  About 400 farmers will be trained as seed growers and each farmer will be provided 15 to 25 kg quality seed to promote informal seed system.

•  About 20 farmers from selected villages in Andhra Pradesh will be linked to APSSDC or NSC for production of Foundation/Certified seed.

•  Two Seed Producing Farmers’ Groups will be established in Karnataka and linked to KSSC and NSP of UAS-Raichur.

•  Continue links with NGOs and CBO partners involved in seed production and distribution to smallholder farmers in Tanzania (2 NGOs) and Ethiopia(3 NGOs)

•  Farmer cooperative in Ethiopia will be used for seed production and distribution

•  Pro-poor seed delivery systems such as seed revolving scheme, community seed banks, farmer field schools will be continued

• Organizing field days at seed production and scaling up sites, seed fairs, demonstrations to create awareness about new varieties

Activity 2: Targeted breeding

• Use newly identified sources of resistance/tolerance for developing improved breeding lines with enhanced drought tolerance, resistance to fusarium wilt, and market-preferred seed traits.

• Develop ascochyta blight resistant breeding lines for Ethiopia and Kenya – new activity.

• Use marker-assisted breeding (MABC & MARS) for improving yield under moisture stress conditions in target environments (linked to TL-I).
