Dynapac’s experience o surace covering compaction con-trol dates rom the late 70s. Since then we have oered ourcustomers the opportunity to control the compaction work in real time and to document the completed work or impro-ved quality control, rom the rst display instruments via belt

printers and simple computers to today’s advanced but stilluser-riendly systems.

The compaction meter registers the movement o the drum inthe vertical plane. This movement changes as the compactionincreases and the rigidity o the underlying surace increases. In principle it can be compared with bouncing a gol ball ondierent suraces. On loose suraces (non-compacted sand)there is basically no bounce, while on a hard surace (concrete)there is a very good bounce. The better the bounce, the hig-her the CMV. We do not know, however, exactly how high the

Dynapac Documentation SystemBackground

Dynapac’s documentation system is built up in three levels. Atthe basic level there is the compaction meter. This can then beexpanded with increasingly more advanced documentationtools in the orm o computers mounted on the roller with di-erent positioning systems. The compaction meter consists o the ollowing main parts:

1. Sensor (accelerometer)2. Processor unit3. Display instrument

The sensor registers the vibratory movement o the roller andthis inormation is then transerred to the processor, where it is

analysed. The analysed inormation is presented on the displayinstrument as a digital value, CMV (Compaction Meter Value).A high or low measurement range (CMV 0-150 and 0-50) canbe selected with a switch on the instrument panel.

The compaction meter provides a relative measurement o rigidity o the surace. This increases with an increase in thecompaction and is refected in a rising CMV. An accelerometercontinuously measures the compaction orces that occur asthe vibratory drum works the surace. The signals rom the ac-celerometer change as the surace becomes harder and morestable. The signals are then converted via a patented principleto values that can be read on the roller’s instrument panel. The

compaction meter value (CMV), which is non-dimensional, canbe calibrated to the test method used or acceptance inspection(degree o compaction, deormation module (Ev2) ETC). Eachnew compaction job is thereore initiated by compacting testareas to dierent levels and in this way correlating CMV to thedegree o compaction.

DCA is an abbreviation o Dynapac Compaction Analyzer. Itregisters all the CMV data and allows the operator to see thecompaction results on the computer screen. On the basis o experience or an existing calibration, the CMV limiting valuecan be used or each separate compaction job. The DCA willthen indicate precisely which areas require additional com-paction. The computer gives the operator a graphic image o

the completed compaction work. Variations in CMV are shownas dierent colours on the surace and it is thereore easy toidentiy weaker areas and take the requisite action. In most

Introduction

cases it is sucient to make additional runs over an area toachieve satisactory compaction, but some areas may needto be improved by excavating poor material and replacing itwith new material.

The DCA unit is portable and the measurement results canthereore be taken into the oce and studied. It is also easy totranser the measurement data to a standard PC by means o a memory card so that it can be permanently stored.

Compaction meter The display instrument gives the roller operator continuousinormation on the increase in compaction and any weak areas.

At the end o the compaction work the CMV stabilises and theBouncing warning starts to fash. This indicates that the machinecannot signicantly improve the compaction and that urtherruns are uneconomical.

Compaction meter with DCA The same unction as above, but with the opportunity to docu-ment the end results or quality assurance and as an indicationor acceptance inspection. The DCA can be set to show two ormore suraces with the lowest CMV (least bearing strength). The compaction documentation is stored in the computer andcan easily be transerred to other computers or more detailedanalysis or printout. It is also possible in DCA to calibrate CMV to

static fat loads, and thereby obtain a receipt when the correctcompaction has been achieved.

Compaction meter with DCA-GPS The same unction as above, but all the runs can be documen-ted which gives the roller operator ull control o the increasein compaction over the entire area. The DCA also shows theposition o the roller in relation to a selected reerence line orthe section, which eliminates the need or extra setting outto orientate the operator. The analysis unction enables thecompaction work to be replayed to assess i the roller has beenused eciently or i the roller pattern needs to be optimized. At the same it is possible to see how many runs have been al-located over the surace and which CMV have been achieved.

The results rom the acceptance inspection can be entered inthe DCA so that the results rom quality control can be collectedtogether in one place.

bounce is (or how well-compacted the area is). This requiresthe compaction meter to be calibrated to the static fat loador the density values.

Regardless o whether the system has been calibrated or not,

the roller operator continuously receives inormation on theincrease in the compaction, whereby an increasing CMV me-ans an increase in the compaction. When the increase in CMVlevels o you start to approach the limit to what the machinecan achieve on the surace in question, and urther compactioncan be uneconomic or even damaging.  The compaction meter also gives an indication as to whether thearea is uniormly compacted (the same CMV over the entire area)or i the surace has irregular rigidity (large variations in CMV).

Compaction meter

A Dynapac roller with a compaction meter is muchmore than just a compaction machine. The compac-tion meter gives the roller operator inormation onthe increase in compaction or each run, it showsvariations in the rigidity o the underlying surace,it can localize weak areas, and it indicates when thematerial is ully compacted. The compaction meteralso tells the roller operator i the roller does double jumps, which can damage both the roller and the

compacted material. Avoiding double jumps saveboth time and money. The compaction meter alsohelps to avoid an unnecessary number o runs, which reduces both uel consumption and wearon the machines.

Sensor (accelerometer)A sensor (1) sits on the vibrating part, which continuously regis-

ters the movement o the drum. The signals rom the sensor are

sent to a processor unit (2), where they are processed.

1

Display instrument (CMV instrument) The CMV indicates the rigidity o the compacted material. The

higher the CMV, the more rigid and more compacted the mate-

rial is. When CMV no longer increases during additional runs this

means that maximum compaction has been reached during thepresent conditions.

3

Processor unit The signals rom the sensor (1) are processed in a processor (2)

and presented as CMV (compaction meter value) on the instru-

ment panel (3).

A Dynapac vibratory roller with compaction meter and DCA-S is a

reliable system or the control o compaction, and thereby guarantees

rst-rate quality in your next project. The operator can continuously read the compaction results on

his instrument panel. As opposed to conventional measurement

methods, the compaction meter provides continuous measurement

results and not only random samples as beore.

The Dynapac Compaction Analyzer registers all the measure-

ment values rom the compaction meter, while at the same timethe operator can see the compaction results immediately on the

computer screen.

Dynapac has developed this unique combination so that the

compaction will be correct rom the very start.

A genuinely protable machine!

Careul compaction o each layer o soil provides a signicant

improvement o the bearing strength o the earth materials. A uniorm

bearing strength in each layer prevents uncontrolled settlements in

the uture.Correctly used, a vibratory roller is the perect machine or

compaction work. I, moreover, you can use the same machine or

compaction control it is an excellent instrument in the compaction

process. It helps you to localize areas where additional compaction

is needed to achieve uniormity and satisactory compaction cha-racteristics.

A genuinely protable machine!

A Dynapac Compaction Analyzer means that:· The compaction energy can be concentrated to the ground suraces

that need additional compaction.· No unnecessary compaction o already nished suraces.· The risk o inerior or exaggerated compaction is eliminated.· Each stage o the compaction work is documented, and high-quality

documentation o the compacted area is obtained immediately.

In other words you now have a much greater opportunity to achieve:

· First-rate compaction results with maximum uniormity in terms othe bearing strength o each layer.

· Simple quality assurance.· More ecient compaction.· The best possible economy or both contractors and purchasers.
