Canton

35031780 (20 Jan.) entire letter from Canton to Trieste carried on the ship “Prince de Kaunitz” flying the Austrian flag and therefore stopped in August by the British frigate “Britannia” as part of the blockade of Spain and France, with endorsement in French on reverse: “This letter was seized by the captain of the frigate ‘Britannia’ commanded by Captain Tompson, the 1st August 1780”, eventually posted from Spain and showing “Andalucia/Baga” h.s. and sent overland to Trieste, one of the earliest (if not the earliest) letters from China with postal markings, an important piece for any advanced collector or exhibitor of Treaty Ports postal history or the early postal history of China. Ex Anna-Lisa and Sven-Eric Beckeman.

HK$ 60,000 - 80,000

35041817 (7 Nov.) entire letter from Canton to Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A. (31.3.18) “(by) Brig Panther” showing U.S. “Ship” and “Falmouth Ship” h.s. both in red, rated “14½” (cents: 12½ cents U.S. domestic inland rate (81-150 miles) + 2 cents city delivery), rare early U.S. mail, reinforced splitting along joins, fine usage.

HK$ 15,000 - 20,000

35051835 (5 Feb.) entire letter from Canton to Frederick Huth & Co., London (27.8) “p ‘Arab’” showing “India Letter/Deal” framed h.s., with London arrival c.d.s. on reverse, rated “1/-”, fine usage showing incorrect charge as China mail was charged at a different rate from India mail before 1840 (and should not have received the India Letter handstamp).

HK$ 4,000 - 5,000

35061836 (29 Sept.) entire from Philadelphia to Wetmore & Co., Canton “(per) ‘York’” showing “Forwarded by/Masters, Markoe & Co./New York” oval h.s. on reverse, fine to very fine, early usage of this forwarder’s handstamp.

HK$ 2,000 - 2,500

See lots 3002–3004 for 1842-43 incoming letters to a British officer on the H.M.S. Agincourt at Canton.

35071840 (18 Jan.) entire to London via Dartmouth (3.6) “pr. ‘Tho Coutts’, (Captain) Warner”, with “Dartmouth/Ship Letter” step type h.s., “Dartmouth” double arc d.s. and red London arrival c.d.s. on reverse, rated “2/8”, docketed “1840 18 Jan’y Russell & Co.”, one of the earliest examples of mail to leave Canton following the order of Captain Charles Elliot, the British Superintendent of British Trade in China, prohibiting British merchant ships from traveling up the Pearl River (an unofficial blockade) and the First Battle of Chuenpi. An important cover both from the postal history and historical perspectives.

HK$ 10,000 - 12,000

The cargo ship “Thomas Coutts” had arrived in Canton in October, 1835. Since his ship was only carrying cotton, Captain Warner signed the Chinese bond not to trade in opium, in defiance of Elliot’s order to British ships not to sign it, since it represented a precedent for the restriction of free trade. The “Thomas Coutts” probably left China during the third week of January, 1840, sailing from Whampoa, the anchorage for ocean-going vessels. Interestingly, Captain Warner carried a letter from Imperial Commissioner Lin Zexu to Queen Victoria condemning the opium trade and asking for its cessation.

35081843 (8 July) entire letter from Canton to Philadelphia “(by) ‘Paulina’” showing “New York” c.d.s. (8.12) and U.S. “Ship” h.s. both in red, rated “12½” (cents, U.S. domestic inland rate from New York to Philadelphia).

HK$ 5,000 - 6,000

35091845 (1 Feb.) entire letter from the Director Mayor of the 12th Arrondisement, French Royal Institute of Deaf Mutes, Paris to Canton “par Marseilles…” (10.2) showing “Paris/Chambre des Pairs” origin c.d.s. (6.2) with boxed “P.P.” in red and “Bombay/Ma 24 1845/Str. Postage/Inld. 8 Do 2” h.s. adjacent and “Forwarded/J.A. Durranj/Macao” oval h.s. on reverse (across the join), fine, very unusual transit via forwarder in Macao. Roumet certificate (2009).

HK$ 8,000 - 10,000

B.P.A. certificate (2011). S.G. 36.

HK$ 80,000 - 100,000

The cover was too late to catch the French packet “Yangtse” which departed Hong Kong 24 July and thus the “Too Late” c.d.s. was applied in Hong Kong. It was instead sent by British packet service and discharged at Naples and then sent by rail to the destination, receiving both the Italian train post office c.d.s. and the German train post office foreign mail registration label. Fumigation in 1881-82 is much rarer than 1883 and subsequent, with the fumigation evident in the fractional staining of the lower part of the red “R” handstamp.

During part (1879-81) of the period the “D28” barred oval was current, a much rarer “Kiung-Chow” 20mm. c.d.s. is also known. The Scarcity Guide in the Webb Supplement records only 15 examples, and it is not recorded on cover. One theory is that the c.d.s. was used at a short-lived sub-agency. Webb recorded this cancellation on three values of the 1880 surcharges, all of which are represented below, together with the 10c. on 16c. yellow that he had not recorded.

HK$ 7,000 - 9,000 The two entires illustrate the practice at the time of sending letters in triplicate, with one via Portuguese vessel heading directly to Portugal, another sent via India and then on to London and then by British packet to Portugal, and the third sent under cover of any other then available means.

35801827 (4 May) entire letter datelined from “Ilha do Norte” (Island of the North) to Lisbon, in which the author mentions that “I have not been able to send you from Macao a copy of this letter with the bill of lading… but now that we have arrived after a 42 days passage to the Island of the North, I will leave this here to take the first available ship heading to your direction…”, fine. The LocaLLy overprinTed “repubLica” 10 avos

The raresT sTamp of macau

35961913 (Oct.) Don Carlos I locally overprinted “Republica” 10a. dull blue, nearly perfectly centred, deep rich colour, extremely fine and fresh unused, exceedingly rare (with no more than five examples available to collectors), the rarest and most important stamp of Macau. Yang footnote after 197.

HK$ 100,000 - 120,000

The legendary locally overprinted “Republica” 10 avos has been written about in the literature from Macau since at least 1933 (cf. Macau Filatelica Vol. 1, no. 3 (Dec. 1933) listing by José Marco) and was included in the 1937 catalogue edited by Macau Filatelica (as no. 199). It was similarly included in Neues Handbuch der Biefmarkenkunde (Frankfurt am Main, 1934). It, however, was omitted from the listing of the issue prepared by Carlos George and not included in the stamp catalogues published in Portugal and Spain.

A contemporary confidential postal report into the issuance of the 1911-13 locally overprinted and surcharges issues discovered at the Overseas Historical Archive in Lisbon in the last decade provides a listing of the number of stamps of each denomination overprinted with the local “Republica” overprint: 10 examples of the Don Carlos I 10 avos are listed as overprinted, definitively documenting the stamp’s overprinting by the Macau Post Office. There is likewise a manuscript document in the Macau archives again showing 10 examples of the 10 avos being overprinted in the listing for the set.

Interestingly, this overprinting was contrary to Decree No. 20 (4 July 1913) to all Portuguese Colonies that stamps of which 1,000 or more existed in stock were to be overprinted “Republica” locally and may have been the reason, according to Luís Frazão, the eminent Macau scholar, it was omitted from information provided Carlos George. However, because of misunderstanding of local authorities, the Governor of Macau subsequently issued Executive Order No. 234, published in Macau 20 Sept. 1913, that “all stamps… existing in stock (irrelevant of number) should be overprinted at once and put on sale”, in effect countermanding Decree No. 20.

It had been earlier written by Mr. Frazão in his Handbook that a sheet of 28 stamps had been overprinted. With the discovery of the record from the Overseas Historical Archive, it can now be stated definitively that only 10 examples were overprinted. Five of the locally overprinted 10 avos are in the Macau Postal Museum, having come from the collection of Correa Nunes, a well-known collector who lived in Macau from the thirties to the fifties. Thus, a maximum of five examples are available for collectors. Japan 3s. stationery card overprinted over the indicia “(Official) Business Communication” and at top center “(Official) Business Post Card” showing “2 sen Paid/Kenjiho” (now HwangHae KyoMiPo) red h.s. with printed address to the HwangHae-do Post Department, containing printed form for ten-day monetary report on the reverse, unused, very fine and exceedingly rare (believed to be unique), potentially the earliest philatelic emission by North Korea as well as its earliest postal stationery.

HK$ 6,000 - 8,000

After the Japanese surrender in the August 1945, Japanese stationery cards continued to be used in North Korea. This card shows the conversion of the original Japanese stationery card into an official card, as well as its uprating to a higher denomination by the Kenjiho handstamp.

Issued Stamps

37091946-55 Hibiscus 20ch. red with “Mihon” (Japanese-language) specimen overprint, thinned and small faults, good appearance, extremely rare. Scott 1S.

HK$ 4,000 - 5,000

Korean-language Specimen overprints are also known on the first issue. It is the collector’s view that the “Mihon” Japanese-language specimens predate these, reflecting the continued use of the Japanese language in the early days of the new nationhood.

37101946-55 Hibiscus 20ch. rose-red corner marginal block of eight from the upper left corner of the sheet showing “No. 78” printed control number in the margin and 50ch. apple green corner marginal block of four also from the upper left corner showing “No. 464” printed control number, both on white paper from the earlier printings, unused without gum as issued, bright colors, very faint diagonal marginal crease in 20ch. block crossing upper left corner stamp, fine to very fine, very scarce with control numbers. Scott 1, 2 cat. US$900.

HK$ 3,000 - 4,000

3711 1946-55 Hibiscus 20ch. scarlet irregular block of 16 and 50ch. bright apple green block of 16 (4 x 4) from the bottom of the sheet, both on white paper, unused without gum as issued, fresh and very fine, nice complementary shades to the blocks in the preceding lot. Scott 1, 2 cat. US$2,240.

HK$ 6,000 - 8,000

37121946-55 Hibiscus 50ch. yellow green on buff marginal block of four, variety rouletted (instead of perforated), unused without gum as issued, roughly separated at lower left, some faint age traces on reverse, fine and very rare, the stamp is unlisted in this rouletted state. Scott 2a var.

HK$ 4,000 - 5,000

37131946-55 Diamond Mountains 50ch. (small “50”) carmine-rose, well centred, very fine and fresh unused without gum as issued. Scott 3 cat. US$2800.

HK$ 6,000 - 8,000

37141946-55 Diamond Mountains 50ch. (small “50”) scarlet marginal example, unused without gum as issued, few light age spots endemic to this stamp, fine to very fine, a nice contrasting shade to the previous stamp. Scott 3 cat. US$2800.

HK$ 4,000 - 5,000

37151946-55 Diamond Mountains 50ch. violet, perf. 11 on all sides, fine to very fine unused without gum as issued, very scarce. Normally this stamp is imperforate either vertically or horizontally. Scott 5a cat. US$300+.

HK$ 4,000 - 5,000

37161946-55 Diamond Mountains 50ch. violet, perf. 11 x imperf., block of four, showing two tête bêche vertical pairs, very fine and fresh unused without gum as issued, with the upper right stamp also showing the line through “0” variety [pos. 37] . Scott 5e cat. US$2500.

HK$ 6,000 - 8,000

The tête bêche variety occurred on some sheets when the fifth row was inserted upside down. Dr. Maeda has suggested that the line through the “0” variety might only occur on sheets containing the tête bêche error, not having seen it on a non-tête bêche sheet or on an imperforate stamp.

37171946-55 Diamond Mountains 50ch. violet, perf. 11 x imperf., complete sheet of 100, showing ten tête bêche vertical pair varieties, with the fifth row of stamps inserted upside down, very fine and fresh unused without gum as issued, couple light marginal bends mentioned for accuracy. Position 37 also shows the line through “0” variety. A magnificent and very rare sheet. Scott 5/5e cat. US$13,440.

HK$ 40,000 - 50,000

37181946-55 Hibiscus and Diamond Mountain unused and used selection, including different printings of 50ch. green, 50ch. rose red (large figures) used (5, including pair; faults), 50ch. violet blocks of four (4, including one imperf. and one used) and a number of 50ch. violet imperf. x perf. 11 with vertical lines in paper (including in the aforementioned blocks), overall fine to very fine, a very interesting assemblage (40).
