    1.The Ant and the Grasshopper

In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart'scontent. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.

"Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling inthat way?"

"I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do thesame."

"Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; "We have got plenty of food at present."But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.

When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger - whileit saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in thesummer. Then the Grasshopper knew: It is best to prepare for days of need.

The Wolf, however, did truly come at last. The Shepherd-boy, now really alarmed, shouted inan agony of terror: "Pray, do come and help me; the Wolf is killing the sheep"; but no one paidany heed to his cries, nor rendered any assistance. The Wolf, having no cause of fear, at his

leisure lacerated or destroyed the whole flock.

There is no believing a liar, even when he speaks the truth.

    3.The Fox and The Crow

A Fox once saw a Crow fly off with a piece of cheese in its beak and settle on a branch of a tree.

"That's for me, as I am a Fox," said Master Reynard, and he walked up to the foot of the tree.

"Good day, Mistress Crow," he cried. "How well you are looking today: how glossy yourfeathers; how bright your eye. I feel sure your voice must surpass that of other birds, just asyour figure does; let me hear but one song from you that I may greet you as the Queen ofBirds."

The Crow lifted up her head and began to caw her best, but the moment she opened hermouth the piece of cheese fell to the ground, only to be snapped up by Master Fox.

He soon discovered the secret of thehidden treasure, and digging down, came to the lump of gold, and stole it. The Miser, on his nextvisit, found the hole empty and began to tear his hair and to make loud lamentations. Aneighbor, seeing him overcome with grief and learning the cause, said, "Pray do not grieve so;but go and take a stone, and place it in the hole, and fancy that the gold is still lying there. It willdo you quite the same service; for when the gold was there, you had it not, as you did not makethe slightest use of it."

"That is a good joke," said the Hare; "I could dance round you all the way."

"Keep your boasting till you've won," answered the Tortoise. "Shall we race?"

So a course was fixed and a start was made. The Hare darted almost out of sight at once, butsoon stopped and, to show his contempt for the Tortoise, lay down to have a nap. The Tortoiseplodded on and plodded on, and when the Hare awoke from his nap, he saw the Tortoise justnear the winning-post and could not run up in time to save the race.

Then the Tortoise said: "Slow but steady progress wins the race."

    6.The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

Once upon a long time ago,

there was a little bird- wordy, who got stuck in a snowyflurry, because she never shut her beak, and did nothear the other birds speak when it was time to flysouth for the winter. She would just sit on a branch and sing, and when thewind blew, she would just swing to-and-fro.She didn't even know all the other birds had heard thewords to make like trees, and leave.

So when winter came, she sat there and sang, until itsnowed and her little toes froze to her perch in thetree, and she fell fast asleep from the winters cold.A little girl in a house near by, was wondering why sheno longer heard the song of the bird. So when thepeeping stopped, she put on her shoes and socks,

then went out to search, and found the little birdhanging from her perch. At first the girl cried, for she thought the bird had died. But upon her touch, the little bird flapped her wings and

We didn't need an alarm clock because we hadRudey, and he was on time every day.Now Rudey, was tough as an old hound dog, andit was his job to protect the hens from anythingthat may harm them, and this he did very well. One day a Chicken Hawk, swooped down out of

  • 8/6/2019 36 Short Stories for Children

    8/37

the sky, and attacked one of the hens. Ol' Rudeyran up there and kicked it in the head with thespurs, that God had given him on the inside ofhis legs, specifically for protecting the hens and

their eggs. Now I would think it safe to say, thatRudey wasn't afraid of anything. One fine mornin'a German shepherd, who's name was "Mojo",thought he was going to have himself somechicken, and took after Rudy like he thought hewas going to have to chase him! He was wrong. When Rudy saw that shepherd a-comin', he justbeat his wings like thunder, stretched out his

feathered friend, the humming bird. Thanks! shesaid at last, through a sputtering gasp of air."What happened? asked the humming bird, as shecame to rest on a branch. Laurie Ann replied," I waslaughing so hard, I fell from the apple tree at the oldfarmers ranch. Poor Larry was still at the top, when Idropped into the creek. Would you be so kind tocarry me back, and see if he is still where we sat?

The humming bird said," I can", and started her fan. They arrived not a moment to soon, for Larry wasalmost done building his cocoon, and as they landedon a branch the hummingbird asked Larry," What areyou going to do with that?". She doesn't even wantyou to change, but if you do, she will love you justthe same".Larry stopped, and thought hard for a moment. Hethen said," This I know is true, and I love her too, butshe can't fly, and I want to see the world".

Lady bug Laurie Ann sighed, spread her wings, tookflight, circled the tree, and landed right beside him!Larry smiled and yelled with delight," YOU CAN FLY"!"Yes", said Laurie Ann, I never told you, I don't knowwhy...I guess it's because you are a worm, and Ididn't think it was of any concern.Larry giggled like a silly little worm, and wiggled hisway down into his cocoon, soon to be a butterfly,

    18.Caren and Sharen

There once was a couple of girls, who livedin this world, whose names were, Caren,

    and Sharen.

Now, Sharen was always worried about her

looks, and what people thought about her.

And Caren, was always helping Sharen, to

feel good about herself, by giving her nice

clothes to wear, fixing her makeup, anddoing her hair.

See Sharen, didn't feel good about herself,

because while growing up, her parents didn't

have a great deal of money, and were

unhappy because they were always trying to

make ends meet, and pay bills.

Although they loved her, they would onlyscold her of the times she was bad, never

showing their love, acknowledging the good

things they had in life, like parents should.

The parents never told her of the good

things she did, because that was "expected"

    of her.

Now Caren's parents, who would rather thanscold, would explain why what she did was

"incorrect", and then show her right, and

reward her for doing good, giving her

    encouragements, and telling her how

  • 8/6/2019 36 Short Stories for Children

    16/37

precious she was to them. This made her

happy and secure in herself, and in her

family, even though their lives were no

different than Sharen's.It's kind of like teaching a pet a new trick,

reward them for doing good, and they will

do it again, and lick their lips, with a smile!

So, Here Caren was, trying to make Sharen

feel good about herself, like she should,

because thats what "good friends", are for...

Little Timmy, was walking down the street,

when suddenly he stumbled upon his feet.

He looked down, and there on the ground,

    was something pink and round.

He had no idea what he had found, and

when he picked it up, it made a funny sound.

He put it in a bag, from the lunch he had at

    school, and took it home.

When he got home, he took it out, and

    placed it upon his bed.

He then tilted his head, and said, "I wonder

    what it could be"?

Perhaps I should show my friend Tommy,

    and he may know.

When Tommy came over, he stepped up to

beats me, It's pink and round, and makes a

funny sound kind of like a balloon when yourub it real fast!".

Tommy decided to stay the night.

When they turned out the lights, they heard a

thump, a bump, and a horrible screeching

noise that gave them both a fright!

Tommy screamed and turned on the light,

and there was the thing all wrapped in wires, and instead of pink it was white!

It pulsed, and it throbbed, and it had hold of

    Timmy's stereo knob!

As it gave the knob a twist, the speakers

came to life with a hiss!

Then a squeaky voice was heard," Do not

be alarmed, I will do you no harm. I am onlya brain, and can not cause you any pain,

grief, or sorrow. It is only your stereo I need

    to borrow".

Little Timmy's mother had heard the ruckus,

and came bursting through the bedroom

door, to see what the fuss was.

    20.The Fairy Grandmother

There once was a Fairy Grandmother, whocould do great tricks, with just the flick of her

    wrist!

She was as smart as a whippet, and if you

had a problem, with a pirouette, and wave

of her little fairy hand, she could fix it.

One day while in her garden, she found a

soul, that had strayed from the heart of it'shuman, and had buried itself it the straw she

used as mulch for her garden.

When she asked the poor soul why it was

there, it replied shivering with fear, that it

was trying to warm itself from the cold heart

of its human. The soul then explained that

its human did not believe in God, or Jesus, and was so self-centered, that the human

didn't even notice the harm he was causing

his own soul. He had hurt the soul so much,

    that it left.

The Fairy Grandmother asked the poor

soul, that if she made the human see the

light and believe, would it return to thehuman? The soul stopped shivering, and

with a glow of excitement said," boy would

I!" The Fairy Grandmother then waved her

hand in a circle and blew into her palm as if

blowing a kiss. She then turned back to the

soul and said," Go, go find your human, and

all will be well". The soul was curious and

asked what she had done. The FairyGrandmother replied that since the soul had

left, the human had a near death experience

and saw Jesus, and that she had only

helped him to see his way back, but that if

the soul did not return, the human would die,

and the soul would be lost forever.

The soul thanked the Fairy Grandmotherand said," May god bless you!" The Fairy

Grandmother then said," He already has

    little one,

    he already has".

boring, he spent it eating, sleeping, and snoring.

Just once a week, he would get up and eat, then

go back to bed, and sleep.

He snored in, and wheezed out,

kind of like a train in route.

It was very loud for such a small mouse, and he

would keep awake all of the creatures that lived

    in the house.

From lack of exercise, he grew fat, and then one

day he scared the cat! Who teamed up with the

    dog, and a baseball bat!

They chased the poor mouse all through the

house. They flew through the kitchen, and

    slipped on the floor!

    be faster than most!

Then with a great deal of speed, he grabbed apiece of cheese!

The dog and cat didn't even see!

He decided he was the best, and took the

    cheese back to his nest.

As he lay down to rest, he thought,

    "My life isn't so boring,"

    and he started snoring.

    24.What's a Skip to Do

Hello, my name is Skip, and I am four years old.

Today I am going to take a little trip, and ride my

bike over to visit my poor little brother, He has the

flu, and I must remember to wash my hands and

face, or I may catch it too.

I want to know if he is going to get better soon, so

we can both ride our bikes room to room.

I like to be a fire truck, and he a race car!

We like to go as fast as we can, but never too far.

I'll scream like the siren, while he roars like the

car, and after the third lap...

    So does mom and dad!

It's great when they join the fun, because whoever

wins, is the closest one to the announcer when

    she yells "Stop!"

Today my bike is a motorcycle, and I start it by

kicking the pedal, and as the motor makes noises,

my only hope is that mother won't meddle. As Ijump onto the seat and twist the throttle grip, I

burn rubber, and begin my trip.

When I lift up my feet, the hall becomes a street,

    and the lights traffic signals.

It's just over a mile across the dining room tiles,

to my brothers house, where I must remember to

beware of his oversized guard mouse, who pacesthe gate.

When I get there, I peek in the door to see if he is

asleep, and I know he is awake, when I see his

feet! They are bare, and they stink, and an awful

    color pink!

I say "hey brother, what do you think?" Are you

going to get well? And he reply's," I don't know."Mom made me some waffles, and I still feel

awful! And now I can't sleep 'cause my feet are

    hot!

I said, "Well... I just wanted to see if you wanted

    to ride bikes or not",

    and he said, "not."

So I got on my bike, and rode away. Mymotorcycle turned back into a regular bike,

and the streets were just a carpet, halls and walls.

This was going to be a l-o-n-g day, without my

    brother in which to play...

    28.The Hairy fairies

Mr. and Mrs. Hairy, were a couple of old fairies that

guarded the gates to the greatest caves in the world.

One day Mr. Hairy Fairy awoke, to find that one of the

locks to the gates had broken, and all of the very fairy

dust, was floating into the air.

Mr. Hairy Fairy didn't really care, but Mrs. Hairy Fairy,

gave him a glare that told him he'd better fix the gate

before all the dust escaped into the woods, turning all

of the animals into little Hairy Fairies.

So he looked at the lock, and shook his head in shock,

for it had rotten beyond repair. He didn't know what to

do, so he took off his shoes and socks, and went for a

walk, to find the legendary caveman, who carved

things out of rock. When he found the caveman, he

was picking his nose, sniffing a sock, and beating his

    head against a rock.

Mr. Hairy Fairy, asked him "What in the world was he

doing?", and the cave man replied, the stink of the

sock helps me think, and the rock is the stone I wish to

    hone into something great!

"Well", said Mr. Hairy Fairy, I need your help, before

the fairy dust is felt by all of the creatures of the wood,

and Mrs. Hairy Fairy, gets madder than she should.

I need you to make a lock, for the gates to the caves, possibly out of that rock, so it will never rot. "That

would be great", said the caveman, for this is no

    ordinary rock!

This is an "Emerald ", which is green, and wont easily

be seen, thus it will protect the very fairy dust!

He then gave it a thought, sniffed his sock, and began

honing the stone into a great lock, for the gates to thecaves Mr. and Mrs. Hairy Fairy were bound to save.

Mr. Hairy Fairy was both nervous and excited, for he

knew Mrs. Hairy Fairy was going to like it!

When the caveman was done, Mr. Hairy Fairy paid

him in bread crumbs from the sack he carried on his

    back.

It was getting lat he knew, so he took flight and flew, back to the caves, and replaced the lock on the gates.

With all of the fairy dust safe in the cave, Mr. and Mrs.

Hairy Fairy, were very happy. They combed the hair

on their heads, then went to bed, and they dreamt of

happy little pixies, flittering about, and putting glitter on

    peoples snouts.

    Once upon

  • 8/6/2019 36 Short Stories for Children

    28/37

A long time ago, there were people who would go

out into the woods specifically to find new and

strange plants, and animals. These people were

referred to as 'ologists, such as Zoologists, whostudy animals.

When these people found something new, never

discovered before, it was up to them to give it a

    name.

Well one day one of these people discovered an

animal that looked like a yellow cat with spots, but

was 4 times the size that of the common dog. Itwas noticed that this animal was very fast, and

could jump over large obstacles in a single bound,

and therefore was named the leap-hard, today

    called the Leopard.

Well one day, the leap-hard was chasing some

prey he planned to make his dinner, when all of a

sudden, out of nowhere, he was passed byanother cat doing 70 miles per hour! The

leap-hard stopped in his tracks, looked around

    him, and said, "Cheater"!

And the 'ologist then named the cat, the cheetah!

He would tear through the house, and didn't care

    about no mouse.

We called him "Bat Cat", for short, and he was jet

black, except for the white mask he wore with ablack spot on his lip, that looked like a booger,

    and white paws.

He was very tough, and weighed 22 pounds, all

of it muscle, and he never lost a tussle, except

that of which was with a squirrel he thought he

could attack. The squirrel bit him and tore him

limb to limb, leaving no hair except for a patchhere, and a patch there. The rest was bare

skinned cat! Poor Bat Cat, found out he wasn't all

    that!

We named him Acrobat-Cat because he would

do tricks, and if you wiggled your finger in front of

his nose he would follow it up on his toes, and

walk around the room in circles, and across theliving room floor.

If you picked him up and stuck him to the wall, or

a door, because he trusted us he would stay

there, until you said," Drop Bat cat", and then he

trusted us to catch him, and we would every time.

So this is how he got his name, Acrobat-cat".

But when he got old he got fat, and couldn't do allthat anymore. So he would just lay around on the

kitchen floor, waiting for food, and begging for

    more.

He would blow it in his hands or on his clothes.

He had boogers every-where. They would fly

through the air, and some would stick in his hair,

and on his chair at school.

He once gave his head a tilt, and blew a booger

    in his milk.

He then began to sneeze, and it turned to The

children beside him decided to leave; another

    threw up in a cup.

He decided he'd had enough lunch, and gathered

his boogers in a bunch, and when he threw them

in the trash, they made a splash!

Then he went outside, and found, he could clog

one nostril, and blow them on the ground and

make a puff of dirt, then wipe his nose on his shirt.

He then went to the swing, where he discovered,

he could sling his boogers further than ever, wind

    and weather permitting!

He liked to wear long sleeved shirts, because he

never used a tissue, until one day his sleeves

were so stiff, his mother made it an issue.

Poor little lost one, was very smart, but was

overly interested in all the things of the world. For

this reason he often daydreamed of imaginary

things, of how he thought life should be, and

motorized swings. When he was young, he only

thought of things that he thought were fun, and

didn't pay attention to the teachers or others in

    school.

Now little lost one was a duck, who didn't have

Until one day he wasn't paying attention, and was

dreaming about play, and didn't notice the school

While in route, he began to doubt, when and if he

was going to make it home in time for dinner. It

    was getting late,

and his mother began to worry,

because he always got off the buss at 4:20.

When he got home at last, his mother was mad,

and made him take out the trash.

The next day came, and as always the same, he

was daydreaming, and was late again, and

missed the school buss. It then began to rain.He started walking to school, and as he walked,

he thought and thought why he never paid

attention. And as he thought, he found himself

lost in the woods. Oh how he wished he could pay

    attention like he should.

Now he thought about a story he once heard,

about a goose that once got loose from a farmer, and was now the smartest creature of the wood.

Perhaps if he could ask her how, to pay attention,

    she would teach him.

Just then he heard a loud noise, and his hair

stood on end! He thought of all the dangers he

had heard about getting lost in the woods, and

then he was scared! He wanted to run, but hedidn't know where when a moose jumped out of

the bush, and stared straight at him!

Little lost one knew he was fast, but not enough to

    out run a" MOOSE"!

Little lost ones eyes grew wide with fright! He saw

the mooses teeth, and thought he might bite!

Then the moose smiled and said," Come child, and stay awhile. You are no doubt, lost. Let us sit

down and talk of your troubles. Then we will get

and said," Think of tomorrow, but act today, in

this way you will pay attention today, and act onyour thoughts tomorrow, living your dreams...

    Not getting lost!".

Little lost one said," thank you Mr. Moose. Now, I

don't suppose you know where I could find the

goose that got loose from the farmer do you?

The moose laughed and said," Who put that in

your head? It wasn't a goose that got loose. Itwas I, Mr. Moose," and he showed him the scars

from the cart the farmer made him pull.

Then he said," Now it is time for you to go.

Follow me, and I will show you the way.

When he got home, he was listening to what his

mother had to say about his missing school that

day, when once again his mind began to stray, and he wasn't paying attention. He was thinking

about what he could do tomorrow, that he learned

    today.

possible by working on them a little bit at a

She told them a story of a grouse who

wanted to build a house, and started with

only one piece of straw. The grouse had to

decide when it was big enough for his

    dream.

He continued building the house one pieceof straw at a time, until one day, he said,

This is fine! It could have been a huge

castle, or a little homie house, but it was the

    dream of one little grouse.

She then told her children, "You too can

have what ever you want in your dreams, or

    then asked her child,

for their first time. He also liked to watch

the squirrel gather his nuts, and stash them

in a hole the squirrel had dug under the old

oaks roots, which the squirrel called his

home. The wise old oak even provided

shade for some folk in the heat of a hotsummers day, and held a swing on a

branch, for children to play. The wise old

oak was a very good tree indeed, and

provided many things, for many lives in
