Why Use 360 Feedback? It is important for managers to understand the value of 360 feedback. Be clear about the reasons for introducing the process. It’s usually linked to Personal
Development, so explain the follow-up activities.
It can be useful to position the 360 process in the context of role relationships.
In other words, rather than simply talk about Personal Development or Feedback on Competencies, highlight wider 360 benefits viewed from the
perspective of more effective management of Role Relationships.
This can be particularly relevant if the feedback groups includes Customers, Business Partners, or Stakeholders.
The 360 feedback helps clarify the views of different groups and also encourages reflection on their expectations.
Managing Role Relationships
Each Group will view the Focus Person i.e. the subject of the 360, from a different perspective. The needs and expectations of Direct Reports are not the same as Colleagues.
360 feedback provides an opportunity to explore these different views.
The Facilitators providing feedback should receive training. This increases consistency and helps keep a focus on the 360 objectives.
Briefing Notes for managers receiving 360 feedback can explain that the feedback relates to the views of different groups, so feedback is role related,
not ‘personal’.
Managers can be reminded that the process highlights issues relevant to each group and should not allow natural defensiveness block important insights.
Briefing Managers
There are four key steps that contribute to a positive outcome:
Listen to the Feedback
Clarify the Information
Explore the Alternatives
Develop an Action Plan
The Pario 360 Background Notes explain the steps in more detail and can be used in a Briefing Document for managers.
Four Steps to Feedback
The effectiveness of the 360 degree feedback process can be enhanced by using written comments to clarify ratings of statements.
Another option involves adding keyword selection to the 360. The feedback report reviews how often certain words were selected by
respondents.
This technique encourages reflection on links with other feedback in the report.
360 Feedback Options
Feedback is important as it helps managers adapt, respond positively to new demands, and develop wider leadership skills.
It is through feedback that managers become aware of what other people require, and how they need to adapt their approach.
Building on Feedback
New job demands and changing expectations mean that we need to challenge old habits and look at things in a new way.
