“Puttin’ on the Ritz” Awards Dinner Dance By Cathy Laws and Hope Andruss, Event Co-Managers

This “Star-studded Event” is all about you and your fellow SOS Members! Join us to kick off 2014 with the glitz and glamour of “The Great Gatsby” at the SOS Awards Dinner Dance. This party recognizes the contributions, serious and not so serious, that members have made to the club over the past year. Once again, we will be at the Sheraton Annapolis on Saturday, February 8! The pre-party will begin in an upstairs suite at 5:30 PM. Then the ballroom doors will open at 6:30 and the buffet dinner will be at 7:00. The evening includes dinner, award presentations, live music and dancing the night away. Cash bar available. Our Master of Ceremonies Dane Skagen has promised a few surprises. More details later. Think of the “Roaring 20’s,” the Charleston, gangsters and molls. Ladies it’s your opportunity to bring out the “bling” or your 1920’s flapper attire. Gentlemen, black tie to sailing attire is appropriate. There will be prizes for the best female and male who epitomize the theme. The party is the night before the February brunch, which is also at the Sheraton, so plan to stay over and attend the brunch the next day. A block of rooms is available for SOS by mentioning Singles on Sailboats. You may be able to get a better rate, if you are an AAA or AARP member. VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE

We were blessed by the Gods, weather gods that is. No, we did not have perfect weather for the Parade of Lights, but we were very fortunate. Nearly ninety or so SOS’ers gathered to celebrate the Parade of Lights on a very rainy night. Thank you first to Frank Florentine. Without him our entry would never come to fruition. First he designs, and then he begins the

implementation process. Week after week he gathers the “elves” and directs the wiring, tethering and lighting process. Every participating hand makes a contribution, those that carry, cook, attach, etc. And an enormous thank you goes to Dennis Krizek for allowing us to use his boat. If you have never seen the raising of the “lights” you have no idea how intricate, scary, and complicated it is. I am sure Frank would say it is simple but keeping the scaffolding from crashing into boat parts is no easy task. Add a little wind and the mission is even more “exciting.” With the threat of an icy, dangerous night the parade almost did not happen. But the parade did go on. Thank you Frank, Dennis, daughter Sarah and husband Mat, Marilyn Zimmer, Diane Gillespie, and Rebecca Mason for not only guiding our sleigh on the water upon a bitter cold and piercing wet night but for steering on through the muck and on to a BIG WIN. Yeah team! Head elf Ron Pence should also be remembered for tasks big and small and music making with his band “Last Call.” The cheers went on and on for more music! And who would miss a party where Barbara Mistrik orchestrates the food. No one would if they ever tasted all the goodies she brings together. How does she make it all come out at the right time? Doug Townsend the warmth of your home and opening it to all SOS’ers is vital to this special happening. Thank you Doug, and thank you

all.

More fun is coming. You may still be recovering from the holidays but sign up now. Fireside Chats are incredible opportunities to meet and enjoy other members and they are offered in numerous areas. There is one here at my place in Annapolis on January 10th, another in Virginia hosted by Susan Jenkins on the 11th, and two on the 25th. The brunch is on the 12th

of January and Putting on the Ritz is just around the corner.

The New Board and Committee Chairs meet early in January for an important work session. If you have constructive ideas for the coming year, email them now to the appropriate committee chair or myself so we can review them immediately and incorporate them in to our discussions at that meeting. This is when we plan for the year. We would like to consider and embrace your thoughts, but we can only do that if we have them. I look forward to a great New Year and wish you all the best! REMEMBER TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP NOW.

Commodore: Thanks to Robin Meigel for organizing the club calendar and Robyn Stewart for working on developing a list of possible event venues. Vice Commodore: Reminder all that nominations for the club’s four major awards are being accepted and will be presented at the Awards Banquet, Feb. 8, at the Sheraton. Treasurer: Club is in a stronger financial position than in ‘12.Committees must still look at profit/loss for all events. Bareboat: BVI Trip on February 22, 2014 with 7 boats reserved and 35 crew placed. There was a BVI crew and skipper party on November 10. Two skippers have signed up, so most boats are filled. The French barge trip on the Canal du Nivernais on September 13, 2014 has 118 people signed up. There is a Bareboat Survey in the December Whisker Pole and suggestions for 2015 trips and volunteers for trip coordination are coming in. Brunches: No report Communications: No report Cruising: Search is in process for several co-chairs for Cruising and expected to be complete by end of the week. Database: Membership renewal reminder was sent out Dec 2 to those who had not yet renewed. Modifications to the website can be made without involving Memberclicks. The off season focus will be to revamp the cruising sign up forms and confirmation emails. The search for a replacement for the current admin. is underway. Education: There are cruising policies that refer to basic skills. We suggest the 2014 Cruising Chair review these policies and revise as necessary based on the new basic skills format. Online signups for Spring Training will open January 1. We propose that from the period of January 1 – January 15 registration be limited to SOS members. After Jan 15, both members and non-members can sign up. Attendance fee for Spring Training was approved First Mates: Assisted in the development of the revised Basic Skills Handbook. Sent a document with recommended Precautions and Procedures for Passing Lines to the Passing Line Standard Operating Procedures group. Led the FM Breakout Session at the Cruising Wrap Up. Membership: A new structure for chairs for PR, Membership Recruitment and Membership Retention was approved. This new structure replaces the past Membership Committee. Newsletter: In November there were 287 hits on the online Whisker Pole, but members using the link from the Newsletter blast are not recorded, so the 287 may not be accurate. Ninety copies of the November 20-page Whisker Pole were mailed to 71 members (9.7% of membership) and 19 issues to Happy Hour coordinators at a printing and postage cost of $363.80. The cost per issue was $4.04. Safety: Info has been sent to the Passing Line Standard Operating Procedure Committee with the goal to have a working draft by the first week of Jan and a final by the third week of Jan to be incorporated into the Raft Capt training, Spring Training, and Basic Skills training. Skippers Advisory: Committee reviewed proposed Basic Skills revision and submitted suggested edits. Request the BOD develop a procedure to insure that any club member born after July 1, 1972 comply with state law by having a safe boating certificate when operating a motorized vessel. Social: Seventy people are signed up for the After POL party.

2014 SPRING TRAINING Registration, Schedule and Directions

Saturday, March 15, 2014 Deadline: March 9th

for online registration; March 5th postmark for mail-in paper registration

Registration Instructions

Spring Training is both a fun and educational event that includes many new members who are unfamiliar with the "routine.” We ask that all registrants read the instructions below before calling with questions. Cost: $55.00 Member, $75.00 Nonmember and all after deadline (see below). Included in the cost is a $5.00 non-refundable fee in the event that Spring Training is cancelled for any reason, including weather. See snow emergency instructions on page 19. Please note that classes are filled on a first-come first-served basis, so don’t delay registering! Online registrations cannot be modified, so register carefully. Registration for specific classes is limited. SOS reserves the right to adjust the class schedule to meet demand for key classes. Upon arrival, check in at the registration desk and pick up your class materials. Please be prompt and courteous; speakers are volunteers as are all the administrative staff. Anne Arundel Community College is a non-smoking and alcohol-free campus, including the parking lot. Please do not smoke or consume alcoholic beverages anywhere. A continental breakfast, a buffet lunch and an afternoon snack are included in the cost of registration. Please note, however, that no food or drink is allowed outside the cafeteria.

To register online: • We encourage online registration. Go to the website, www.singlesonsailboats.org, and you will find a

section for Spring Training. You will see something similar to the paper registration form, also published in the Whisker Pole. Please note that you can only use a credit card online; we cannot process checks online. If you do not wish to use a credit card, you can register by mail with a check. See below.

• Cost: $55.00 Member, $75.00 Nonmember and all after the March 9th

• deadline.

Choose the courses you would like to attend by clicking on the drop-down menu. If a course you select is “full,” it will not appear on the menu. This is one of the advantages of registering online. You will know your schedule when you register. Please note, however, that last-minute changes are possible due to circumstances beyond our control, so be sure to check-in at registration for your materials.

Cancellations must be received via phone or e-mail no later than March 9th

To register by mail:

.

• If you wish to register by mail, fill in the registration form included in this issue of the Whisker Pole. Mail the completed form together with your check to: SOS Spring Training, PO Box 5708, Annapolis, MD 21403.

• Cost: $55.00 Member, $75.00 Nonmember and all after the March 5th

• deadline.

Fill out all information requested on the form. Please print legibly because your information will be entered into the Spring Training database.

• There are four 90-minute class periods, A-D. Indicate your first, second, and third choices by entering that course number. DO NOT write in the course name but use only the course number. Use a zero if you do not have a second or third choice, or if you do not wish to attend anything during that session. Entering a zero will not assure you your first choice, however, because classes are assigned in the order of registration.

Example: First Choice Second Choice A: 1 A: 2 A: 0

Third Choice

B: 3 B: 2 B: 1 C: 7 C: 2 C: 3 D: 0 D: 0 D: 0

• Cancellations must be received by phone or email no later than March 9th. Checks will be torn up unless

you send a self-addressed stamped envelope with your registration.

Rafting Seminar for Skippers, FMs, and Crew

George Hollendursky, Raft Captain

February 8, 2014, 9:30am - 12:30pm Edgewater Library, 25 Stepney Lane

Continental breakfast provided Rafting is an important aspect of SOS cruising and doing it safely is critical. In February SOS is offering a seminar open to all crewmembers, but designed for Raft Captains, potential Raft Captains, Skippers and First Mates. Learn how SOS builds linear and circle rafts including where and how to set an anchor, place fenders, secure lines, safely use passing lines, approach in the wind, and effectively communicate on the boat and with the Raft Captain. This session covers considerations involved in raft building such as advance planning, general guidelines for all rafts, special considerations for circle and linear rafts, handling emergencies, docking for land-based cruises, and ways in which skippers and crew can assist the rafting

process. • What are the

responsibilities of the Raft Captain and individual skippers?

• How does weather affect raft building? • How do we determine how many anchors to

set, and where to set them? • How do we calculate the amount of space

needed for a circle or linear raft? • When do we build a linear raft or a circle raft? • How much anchor rode should we use, why? • What happens when the wind shifts while a

raft is being built? • What is the effect of current? Or boat wakes? • How can the size of a raft be adjusted for

more or fewer boats? • Is breaking up really hard to do? • What are the emergencies that can occur in a

raft, and what should we do?

2013

SOS Photo Contest (for photos taken in 2013)

There are only five simple rules:

1. Entries must be taken at an SOS event by the member of SOS submitting the photo. But the photo does not necessarily have that event as a theme (a picture of Johnny Bilgewater at a raft-up or the sunset seen from a raft-up are acceptable; even though there is nothing in the picture to prove that it was taken at a raft-up or cruise. We are on the “Honor System”). An SOS event can be cruising, day-sail, a brunch, seminar, bareboat trip, etc. An official SOS event (Happy Hours are not included).

2. The deadline for photo entries has been extended to January 15, 2014.

3. All photographers may participate. However professional photographers- i.e. anyone who earns more than 50 percent of his or her annual income from photography- shall be limited to submitting no more than three photos.

4. All electronics photos must be at least 250 KB or larger in order to produce a clear 4’ x 6’ photo. No more than eight (8) photos per individual.

5. Photos can be altered to achieve color balance that reflects the scene as you observed it. Cropping is also acceptable. Heavily manipulated photos are not eligible.

Other Useful information:

Electronic copies preferred: 1 disk or many disks; paper photos are accepted.

Photos must be submitted in the highest possible resolution. The photos will be enlarged to 5” x 7” and if the photo is fuzzy, it reduces your chance of winning.

Categories: People, Places, Seascapes, Sailing Action (The Judge will put your photos in the correct category

The Judge: Will be an independent individual from outside of the club.

Treasurer’s Report Balances as of November 30Bareboat Checking: $101,874

:

Regular Checking: $21,008 CDs + Hi yield savings: $73,074

Club members who are entitled to refunds have been cancelling their charges with their credit card companies before calling the coordinator to make sure they are going to receive one. This appears to be a new phenomenon and costs the club $25 each time it happens. Last month we paid $50 for this because members had either emailed the coordinator or had some sort of mis-communication with other member of the club. Please contact the treasurer directly at [email protected] and give the treasurer a week to resolve any disputes. Coordinators may not get the refund list in to the treasurer for a couple of weeks after an event. With things like cruises, this may be because they are verifying that all boats did sail. It only takes a few clicks of the mouse to refund credit cards, so this process moves pretty quickly once the treasurer has the list of names. The refund takes about 3 days to show up on your credit card statement. Once you start the process of cancelling with VISA or MASTERCARD, the club is charged the $25, probably to cover vendor costs in opening a claim.
