Dear Proud Patriots,
If you have not viewed the Polk County Schools web-site at www.polk-fl.net
recently or our schools’ Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/
CarltonPalmoreElementary, now is a great time to view both sites. Our
recent Multicultural Night grabbed the attention of many outside of our
school. We were featured on the School Board’s website and also on Bay
News 9! Thank you to all of you that were able to attend our Multicultural
Night and experience each country that was represented. It was definitely a
fun night for all and we are looking forward to continuing the tradition.
Our students and staff have been busy in recent months. They have
collected household items, teddy bears and pennies for the Ronald McDonald
House. Thank you for helping to collect the teddy bears and also the house-
hold items that will help the families having to stay at the Ronald McDonald
house. It is greatly appreciated.
Just a reminder our students in grades 3-5 have already begun FSA testing.
4th and 5th grade students have already completed the FSA ELA Writing
test. We will continue testing after Spring Break. We have placed a copy of
the testing schedule on page 4 of this newsletter and a hard copy will also be
sent home.
Students will need to be present during the testing window to complete the
states requirement for testing. Thank you in advance. WE GOT THIS!!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Dardis

Scholars Synergize: Our kindergarten
classes had a wonderful time
collaborating together to read, create,
and write about animals from different
regions of Africa for the CPE Multi-
Cultural Night. We want to thank our
students for beginning with the end in
mind, our families for coming to
support the special event, and our
volunteers for sharing their time and
creativity.
Sharpen the Saw: Exercising and
spending time with friends are two
aspects of Sharpen the Saw. Recess is a
great time for students to practice this
seventh habit. Climbing, sliding, and
running are some favorite ways the
children like to exercise during recess.
The students have fun using their
imaginations to create and play games
together.
100 Days at School: Kindergarten
mathematicians celebrated the 100th day
of school. Collaborative groups used ten
frames to sort objects, make groups of ten,
and put ten groups together to equal 100
objects. The students enjoyed counting by
tens from 10 to 100. Classes used hands-
on projects to model a variety of ways to
show 100. Students explained their
understanding by writing in their Math
Journals. CPE kindergartners are 100
days smarter!

most students, so practice reading at
home. Don't forget to work on addition
and subtraction facts to build their math
fluency. We have been busy comparing
numbers to 120. Ask your child to explain
what they have been learning about in
math. In science, we have been learning
about Earth's structures and what makes
up our environment. Please continue to
work with your child at home so they can
be successful in school and be ready for
second grade.
First grade is flying by this school year!
We are reading many, many AR books
and taking quizzes to get Mrs. Dardis on
that roof by the end of the year! When
reading at home together, be sure to ask
your child questions about what they are
reading to help check their
understanding. In class, we are reading
both fiction and nonfiction stories and
completing graphic organizers along
with our texts. We then take our
organizer and write a summary of our
stories. It can be a challenging time for

Second grade has been very busy learn-
ing. We have just completed our re-
search projects on severe weather and
created our very first PowerPoint
presentations. The students had a great
time and did an outstanding job with
their presentations.
In reading, our focus will be on compar-
ing and contrasting different elements
within a story. In addition, we will also
compare and contrast two different sto-
ries. Here are a few ways you can help
your child with this concept: have fun
reading different versions of the same
fairy tale or folk tale; talk about the
similarities and differences between the
two books, then switch to nonfiction and
read two books on the same topic;
compare the information in each, again
focusing on similarities and differences.
For example, “Let’s look at each book
and think about the words that are used
to describe. How are the descriptions
alike? How are they different?”
In math, we will be working on meas-
urement and data. Students will be
learning to measure items to the nearest
inch, foot, centimeter and meter. A
great way to help with this skill is to
give your child a list of items around the
house and let them go on a meas-
urement hunt. A little fun at
home while learning!
In science, we will be learning
about the different rocks on
Earth’s surface; how they form
and change. We will be conduct-
ing an experiment on erosion so
students can see firsthand how
the Earth’s surface can change or
form over time.
This past week, several students
were able to participate in the week 6
research project in reading. The
students who participated had
mastered the reading standards
taught during the previous 5 weeks.
The students involved, researched
five different historical landmarks
across the United States, which
focused on one of the third grade
social studies standards. They
completed their research during the
reading block and completed a model
of their landmarks at home. The
students were able to present their
research findings and project to their
respective classes. We are so proud of
these students and the work they
have done. We hope that more
students will be able to participate in
the upcoming week 6 research project!

The fifth grade has shifted into high
gear for these last few weeks before
testing! We are reviewing science
topics through various science
materials as well as using reading
articles in science! Please make sure
your child is at school these last few
weeks as we want to review as much
as possible to make sure every child
is prepared! Additionally, as we are
swiftly approaching the end of the
year please be on the lookout for end
of the year information that will be
coming out shortly. We want to
make sure that every student has
memorable events to wrap up their

their lines and angles as well as
identify and define lines of
symmetry.
The 4th grade will conduct more 3-Act
Tasks in the classrooms. 3-Act Tasks
are a way to teach without textbooks.
They are not held every day but are
becoming more common in Polk
County Schools’ classrooms. 3-Act
Tasks include Act 1 (The Question),
Act 2 (Gathering Information), Act 3
(The Revel), and an Act 4(The Sequel)
can sometimes be included as an
extension. This type of task

incorporates as many senses as
possible and shows a relationship to
real life problems. Students are able
to take ownership of the task and it
forces them to think “out of the box”.
Math in March!
Here’s what’s happening in math in
March: We will be finishing up the
unit on conversion problem solving
with metric measurement and
dividing into plane figures and angle
measurement. Students will be
introduced to points, lines, line
segments, rays, and angles, as well as
the relationships between them.
Students will also construct,
recognize, and define geometric
objects as well as classify two-
dimensional shapes by properties of

In the ART room this nine weeks, we are focusing on the art principles PATTERN, BALANCE, MOVEMENT and
RHYTHM.
Congratulations to Jonathan Beard whose Kids Tag Art design was a finalist in the Heart Smart Art category!
If you would like to help the CPE Art Department raise some funds, please consider ordering a Kids Tag Art
license tag. Visit the Polk Tax Collector’s office at www.PolkTaxes.com/KTAOnline.aspx. Our fifth grade students
created some great designs. Follow the link and choose Carlton Palmore to see the available designs.
We use a lot of wet wipes in the art room! Especially for cleaning little hands after painting. If you would like to
donate some scent-free baby wipes I would greatly appreciate it!
March is Youth Art Month! Please consider doing some fun art activities with your child.
Paint rocks to hide around Lakeland, visit the Polk Museum of Art, or have fun with a
home craft project. Art makes you smart!

Florida Department of Education unveiled a new website that will help Florida families make critical
education decisions by enabling them to access school and district-level data and will better inform
families about the state’s college and career ready standards and the quality of learning taking place
in their students’ classrooms. The website is live at www.FloridaStudentsAchieve.org.
Music 7 HABITS SPOTLIGHT Students will earn a patriot stamp, if they have made great
choices and have followed our 7 Habits each day. At the
end of each month, students will be rewarded for getting
the patriot stamps in their agendas. We will celebrate the
students’ positive behavior efforts with Princess and Super
Hero Shirt Day on March 31st. Watch for those patriot
stamps! The students need to earn 16
stamps to participate. Check your
child’s agenda daily!

Kindergarten will be learning to show
how a melody moves with movement
activities. They will also learn how to
respond to the steady beat and echo
rhythm patterns on classroom
instruments.
1st Grade will learn how to create
melodic and rhythmic patterns on
classroom instruments. They will also
learn to match what they hear in music
to traditional and nontraditional
notation.
2nd Grade will learn to improvise on
Orff xylophones and learn how music is
notated.
3rd Graders will practice reading
notation in songs they sing and playing
recorders and Orff xylophones with
proper technique. They will learn how to
evaluate their performance and the
performance of others. They will also be
learning how to identify the form in
music they hear and see.
4th and 5th Grade classes are also
working on playing the recorder and Orff
xylophones. They will be learning how to
create ostinatos (repeated rhythm
patterns) and add them to songs in order
to make their own music arrangements.
4th and 5th Grade Chorus will record a
video audition for Disney World. If
selected, they will be invited to perform
at Downtown Disney and then spend the
rest of the day at Epcot.
