    Mark 2 Yodels

    All the instruments wi.th the exception o f the speedometerare electr ioal ly control led. The o i l pressure gauge i s controlled ba pressure rated element which i s screwed into the o i l f i l t e r headThe water temperature gauge i s controlled by a temperature sensi t iveelement in the fo:nn of a bulb f i t ted a t the f ront end o f the in le tmanifold water jacket .Access to Instruments ~ 1 : - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ~ ::;; '

    The centre i n s trument panel i s hinged a t the bottom and secura t the top by two knurled screws, one a t each end. To gain access tthe instruments and switches unscrew the two knurled screws and lowerthe panel.Speedometer - Removal

    The speedometer instrument i s removed :tram the front o f thefacia panel a f te r carrying out the following rork a t the rear of theinstrument:-Disconnect the bat tery. Extend the steering coluon ful ly .Unscrew the two bezels where the speedometer and rev. counte

    remote control cables protrude through the dash casing. Remove thedash casing.At the rear o f the instrument, unscrew the two knurled nuts

    and detach the earth wire and the two speedometer retaining pieces.Unscrew the knurled nut securing the speedometer drive cable to theinstrument.

    Draw out the speedometer from the front :facia and wi.thdraw ththree warning l igh t bulb holders (Cable colours: Headlamp - blue/l'lhIgni t ion - browr;V'yellow and white, Fuel - greell/whit e and green).Unscrew the t r ip control cable and withdraw the two illwnination bulbholders when the speedometer can be removed./Continued.

    Revolution Counter - RemovalI t wi l l be found advantageous to f i r s t reJJX)ve the speedometerinstrument as described in the previous paragraphs .At the rear o f the instrument uns crew the two knurled nuts anddetaeh t he earth wire and the two revolut ion oounter retaining pi eces.Unscrew the reroote control of the electr ic clock and detach the

    "snap-on" cable connection (Cab le colour - brown). i.'iithdraw the t \'roi l lumination bulb holders and detach the "snap-on" cable oonnection fo rthe revolut ion counter (Cable colour - black/blue and black/brown).The revolution OOWlter can now be w:i.thdra\vn.Testing Operation of Revolution Counter

    The only tes t ing of th is uni t i s with the engine t icking over.Place an MJ vol-tmeter on the terminals of the genera tor a t the rea r ofth e right-hand. ca.mshaf"t, when a curren t should be recorded. As a roughguide, there should be a 1 vol t output per 100 revs. Should the generator record a voltage output, due to i t s construct ion it can beassumed that it i s :f\mctioning accurately. Should t he revolut ioncounter instrument not then 'unct ion it must be r eplaced.

    When the overdrive i s in operat ion the word "Overdrive 11 in thequadrant behirid the steering whee l becomes i lluminated; when the sidel igh t s are switched on the i l lumination i s automat ica l ly dimmed.

    Servicing ProcedureOnly the above parts wil l in future be supplied :f'rom the JaguarSpares Department and when the 60 lb gauge i s used to replace the 100 1b

    gauge {Part number 0.15913) the appropriate element (Part number 0.15474be f i t ted to the o il f i l t e r head. Similarly, if it i s foundnecessary to replace the operating element (Par t number 0.15914) f i t tedin conjunction with a 100 lb gauge, a 60 lb o i l pressure gauge must alsobe f i t ted.Note: Vfhen checking for a suspected. low indicated o i l pressure asdescribed in Service Bulletin P. 3 it i s advisable to maintain

    an engine speed of 2,500 r.p.m. fo r a period of 2! minutes toobtain the t rue o i l pressure reading on the electr ical ly operateo i l gauge.

    Careful ly remove the damaged cl ip with a pai r of pl iers andclean out a l l traces of the old adhesive from the spring cl ip recess esin the plas t ic moulding. When f i t t ing the new spring cl ips into therecesses follow the ins t ruct i ons supplied with the adhesive.

    Lower the instrument panel and f i t the fuse retaining clip(BD.22655) to the lower edge of the r ight hand lower fuse block.Place the fuse connector (C.20124) in the clip provided and connect t hewhite cable to the terminal block where a l l white cables are collected.Lead the b l a c ~ w h i t e cable from the fuse connector down the l e f t handdoor s i l l following the rear harness, to the covered aperture providedin the l e f t hand rear quarter t a i l casing.Dril.l t w o ~ ~ ~ (6.35 nm) hol es 18" (45.72 em) apart from thecentre of the backlight. When f i t t ing the back-l ight , take care to keep the cables inside the car . Pass the cablesthrough the two grommets in the rear panel and f i t the backlightconnector cables (C.20123) to the black/white and black cables fromthe backlight heating element.Drill. a 7/1611 ( 11 11 mm) hole adjacent to the lower door hinge,inser t the sai l eyelet and ring, and pass the cables out through thisaperture. Strap the cables to the lower door hinge and pass throughanother 7/16" {11.11 nm) hole dril led in the l e f t hand quarter t a i lcasing approximately 2J&" (5.40 mm) to the rear of the lower hinge and

    The foglamp brackets should be bolted to the bumper utilizingthe two inner bumper bracket bolts . The foglamps are f i t ted to thebrackets and are positioned under the bumper on the inside of theoverriders. On later cars, a hole is provided in the front crossmember cover plate adjacent to the bumper bracket, and the foglampconnector cable should be passed through uti l izing a grommet.

    Early cars will require a hole dril led in the front crossmember cover plate as shown in Fig. l .I t will be necessary to dr i l l a (19.05 mm) hole insidethe engine compartment adjacent to the radiator drain tap apertureand a corresponding hole on the opposite side of the radiator. Theholes should be dril led 211 (5.08 em) from the outer edge of thelongitudinal underframe member and (19.05 mm) from the radiator

    support panel. F it the grommets provided and pass the foglamp cablesthrough the grommets into the engine compartment.Connect t he le f t-hand foglamp cable to the req/yellow cableincorporated in the wiring harness, which is situated at the topof t he wing valance in l ine wi th the front of the engine.The red/yellow cable for connection to the right-hand foglampwill be found behind the air cleaner . Remove the flexible hose tothe air cleaner intake box. Remove the two quick release fastenersand withdraw the paper element. Pass the fogl amp cable through thegrommet adjacent to the t op air cleaner intake trumpet.Clip the foglamp c a b l e s ~ o the bumper brackets with the aidof the cable strapping.Remove the original lighting switch and escutcheon and replacewith the four position switch and a new escutcheon plate.Remove the printed circui t resistance from the original switch(terminals 2 and 11) and ref i t to the new switch (terminal 2 - 4)Fit the resistance with the large hole over the centre post andthe printed circui t to the switch back p l ~ t e . Replace the cables as shown in Fig.2. and connect the red/yellowcables, incorporated in the harness, to the foglamp terminal.The foglamps and necessary parts are available from theJaguar Spares Division, Coventry.

    I t has been noticed tha t speedometer heads are being changeddue to excess o il entering the mechanism. When a car i s receivedin Service with th is complaint, ,i t i s advisable to examine the o i lseal contained in the bronze bus h of the speedometer cable drivegear contained in the overdrive rear casing .

    I f o i l is found to be working along the c able, it wil l benecessary to change the complete driven gear bush.

    ELECTRICALLY OPERATED WINDOWS - LIMITTED BACKLASH COUPLING(Mark 10 Model)

    This bulletin should be used in conjunction with the informatgiven in Service Bullet in Nos. P.l3 and 16.Cars now in production are being f i t ted with a new rubber

    c oupling (Part No. BD.20909) and driving peg (Part No. BD.25088) toallow the electr ic motor to gain momentum before rais i ng or loweringthe wi ndow. (The rubber coupling i s item 15 in Fig 53 on page P.43of the Mark 10 Service Manual.I t will be necessary to remove the complete regulator and mounit as described on page P.41, 42 and 43 of the Mark 10 Service

    Manual.Remove the motor from the regulator bracket and l i f t thecoupling off the "D" shaped shaft .F it the driving peg onto the "D" shaped driven shaft , thenplace the rubber coupling with the lug fac i ng the bottom of theregulator in posi t ion over the driving peg. The coupling should befree to ro ta te on the driven shaft .Replace the motor ensuring tha t the motor output shaft isaligned correctly in the "D" shaped hole in the rubber coupling.Replace the regulator assembly ensuring that t he directionsgiven in the aforementioned bullet ins are closely followed.

    EXAMINATIOO' OF SPEEDOMETER CABLE OIL SEAL.~ ~ u r r e n t Production Overdrive Models).

    I t has been noticed that speedometer heads are being changeddue to excess oil entering the mechanism. When a car is received inService with this complai nt , i t i s advisable to examine the o il sealcontained in the bronze bush of the speedometer cable drive gearcontained in the overdrive rear casing .I f oi l is found to be working past the inner seal it will benecessary to dismantle the driven gear bush as follows:-Dril l out the stee l pin retaining the brass adaptor to thephosphor - bronze bearing.Unscrew the adaptor from the bearing by means of the f latsprovided.Remove the rubber seal from the r ecess in the bearing. Fitnew seal (Part No. C.8773) so that the open end of the seal throughwhich the spring is visible, is facing the bottom of the recess of thbronze bearing (See i l lustrat ion overleaf).Screw the adaptor into the bearing and f i t a new retaining p

    I f necessary, dri l l a new 1/16" ( 1.5 JTJn) hole not more than 7/32"(5.5 mm) deep in the side of the bearing; f i t a mild steel pin, peenover and f i le flush.

    Remove the ring nut securing the intermediate speed holdswitch (Automatic transmission models) to the side faciapanel and push the swi tch forward.Pull the switch down below the panel and modify the connections as follows:-

    Automatic Transmission Models.Disconnect the twin green cables connected by a commoneyelet to the swi tch and cut off the eye l e t . Str ip the insulat i on

    from each cable for a l ength of ~ ~ ~ (9.5 Tllll) and solde r on the twonipples .Connect both green cables into t he double connector tubelocated on the fuse connector harness (Jaguar Part number C.23524).Connect the eyelet on the connector harness to the vacantterminal on the switch .     Secure the chromium plated clip to the back face of theside facia panel below the automatic speed hold switch.Care must be taken when dri l l ing the hole for the screw toensure that the polished face of the panel is not pierced by the dr i l lpoint.Disconnect the green cable connected by an eyelet to theswitch and cut off the eyelet . Str ip the insulation from the cable fora length of (9.5 mm) and solder on the nipple.Connect the green cable into the connector tube located onthe fuse connector harness (Jaguar Part number C.23524).Connect the eyelet on the connector harness to the vacantterffiinal on the switch. Insulate any bare wires exposed with uLASSOP.V.C adhesive tape. Extend the tape over the cable insuto prevent any further movement.

    ACCESS TO STARTER MJTOR.(4.2 Mark 10 Model)

    In Service Bulle t in P.35 under the removal of the Mark 1starter motor, ment ion i s made of an access panel in t he right-hanside of the gearbox tunnel.

    This panel i s now being deleted and therefore the setscrsecuring the starter motor will only be accessible from underneathcar .

    The best method of removing t he setscrews i s to use asocket spanner with extensions of approximately 30., (76 ems) in leand enter the spanner from behind the transmission uni t . A secondoperator wil l be needed to guide the socket spanne r on to the setsfrom inside the engine compartment.

    RemovalRemove the s teer ing wheel as detailed in the appropri ate ServiceManual - Sec t ion I - Steering.Disconnect the universal (pot) joint and withdraw the inner columnNote: I t i s not necessary to remove the outer column.Disconnect the cables from the switch connector.for reference when ref i t t ing. Note cable colo

    Release the locknut, withdraw both securing screws from the switchdetach the clamp. Collect the distance pi.ece from the upper screw anthe two lockwashers .Withdraw the switch from the outer column.

    Refit t ing and AdjustingPass the two f ixing screws through the switch clamp, attach thespring washer and locknut to the bottom screw and the distance pieceand washer co the upper screw.Feed the two screws through the column brackets and attach theindicator switch.Tighten the upper screw ful ly .Rotate the nylon str iker ring unti l the s t r iker web i s locatedcentrally between the switch t r ip levers.Refit the inner column, ensuring that the s t r iker tongue is locatedin the top r ight castel lat ion of the str iker ring.Temporarily s t e e r i r ~ wheel ( i f removed).Attach a spring balance to the steering wheel rim and t ighten t hebot tom switch securing screw unti l the wheel wi ll jus t turn with a pul lof 5 ozs. (141.7 grammes) regi stered on the balance (see i l lustrat ion).Turn the locknut towards the S ' V i t ~ h carri er bracket and lock thescrew.Two thicknesses of distance piece ar e available to compensate forany variation in the bore of the column.

    Despite the is sue of Service Bulletin P.44 in November, 1965,it i s apparent that the importance of the inst ructions contained thereinare not r ece iving the attention they warrant.

    Abundant. evidence is availab le that most of the trouble experiencedwith the transistorised elcctr c clock can be traced to the fact thatthey are not being started IMMEDIATELY THE BATTERY IS RECONNECTED.

    I t cannot be too strongly emphasized that FAILURE TO ENSURE THAT THCLOCK IS \ \ O R K I ~ />S SOON AS THE BAT'ffiRY IS CONNECTED WILL INEVITABLY RESUIN IRREPARABLE DAMAGE TO THE TIMEPIECE.
