Old Man Winter has arrived, so we while we can’t be out sailing, we can be learning or improving our sailing skills at the SOS Spring Training event.

March 2016, Vol. 38, No. 3

This is a sailapalooza event to mark the end of winter and celebrate the coming sailing season. We take over several buildings at the college for a day of multiple seminars on scores of subjects including boat handling, all manner of boat and systems maintenance, weather forecasting, safety, the latest boating apps, navigation, marine cuisine, and, of course, sailing. Last season, over 250 sailors from the area attended. During the Winter Wonderland Awards Dinner Party last month, it was my great pleasure to announce that Kitty St. Romain was awarded the 2015 Commodore’s Award in recognition of her significant contributions in fostering the goals of SOS and continued contributions to many aspects of the club. Kitty is a First Mate extraordinaire, who truly

exemplifies what it means to be an SOS First Mate – sailor, teacher, volunteer, friend. She has served two separate terms on the Board of Directors, each time serving as liaison to First Mates. In addition she has chaired the First Mates’ Committee at least twice. Kitty, always willing to step up, volunteered to represent the First Mates at Board meetings last year. Working closely with the Board liaison and the Safety Chair, she proposed changes to club policies to clarify a First Mate’s roles and responsibilities, updated the First Mate Handbook and the Chairman’s tasks, and established the procedures for the First Mate five-year renewal program. A long-time member of the Social Committee, Kitty regularly organizes the Regional Thanksgiving Dinners and other events. She graciously hosts and feeds the Social Committee and has single handedly provided auction items such as a dinner party for six in her home. Kitty has also been active with the Bareboat Committee, organizing a number of SOS charter trips, including to the 2006 Greek Ionian Sea, to the Turkish Turquoise Coast with a post-trip to Cappadocia, and a windjammer cruise in the Caribbean. She has participated as First Mate and crew on other bareboat cruises. She often volunteers to help skippers move boats and shuffle cars, as well as assisting club members with rides to appointments when needed. Emil Becker was honored with the 2015 Ed Klein Member of the Year award, which is presented to an active sailor who has made major contributions to more than one area of club activity. The awardee cannot be a current or recent past board member. Last year Emil stepped up to the table big time! When no one else would allow their arm to be twisted to head up Spring Training, he agreed to organize and arrange for the speakers for the program. He developed a robust program of broad interest to sailors of all levels – novice to skippers and captains. And he’s doing it again this year.

In addition to his recent accomplishments, Emil has been active in the club for more than 20 years and has regularly participated in the SOS Bay activities. He is currently prepping his third boat for the upcoming season. He served on the Board of Directors, was Treasurer and then Commodore in 2001-2002. At various times he has been chairman of the Education, Cruising and Safety Committees. Emil organized one of the first official winter bareboat cruises to the BVIs. It was particularly noteworthy for the bright orange tee shirts everyone wore. The winner of the Elinor W. (Ellie) Abramson Education Award will be announced at a future club event and the Rookie of the Year Award will not be presented for 2015. Special kudos to Shirley Brooks Hollendursky, our Whisker Pole editor, for holding the February issue to incorporate all the rescheduling changes and to Teresa Scofield, the database chair, for handling all the blasts and event calendar changes caused by the Blizzard of 2016! Thank yous to everyone who has contributed to a Fireside Chat – hosts, coordinators and speakers: Elizabeth Hubley, Lorraine Fassett, Jerry Axler, Sandy Huberfeld, Aletta Schaap, Marge Stembel, John Parsons, Charlotte O’Conor, Ben Kaufman, Trish Remele, Irene Aronian, Carol Martz, and Linda Casucci. Much appreciation to Rita Svec and Marge Stembel who arranged nine boats for the sunny BVIs cruise. See you all at the Spring Training weekend – Saturday seminars and party and Sunday brunch with the retrospective slide show and general membership

meeting. Sign-up soon to get your preferred classes. Hope

Commodore: Successful planning session was held by Board Members and Committee Chairs. Vice Commodore: No report Treasurer: Based on the Income and Expenses so far compared to last year, we will probably not have as good a bottom line as we had at the end of last year, but we have planned for increases in revenue for next year without increasing dues. We should end 2015 with a profit, just not quite as robust a profit as the prior 2 years. Bareboat: Carol Jordan has volunteered to coordinate a cruise in Winter, 2017. A proposal will be ready for board approval soon. We still need a coordinator and destination for late summer or fall of 2017. Brunches: The February Regional Brunches were very successful with 100+ people attending in 8 homes in 3 states. Should consider repeating next year. Cruising: Carol Jordan and Meeps Yox will be the Cruising Chairs for 2017. Cruise schedule has been approved and will be printed in the newsletter and placed online. Database: John McDonald is currently working as my intern and it is my intention that he replace me as Database chair around May 2016. A formal request will be made at that time. Education: No report First Mates: No report Membership: Revised text was reviewed for the SOS Policy change to combine Membership Recruitment and Membership Retention into one committee to be known as Membership; Membership Roles and Responsibilities; and Website Navigation Sheet for new members Newsletter: Ninety-five copies of the February 20-page Whisker Pole were mailed to 75 members and 20 issues to Happy Hour coordinators at a cost of $372.59 which was $3.92 per copy. Public Relations: No report Safety: Began activating skippers for sailing with SOS this year. Skipper should ensure that their skipper profiles are current. I participated in the January Skippers meeting. I applauded the Skippers for an accident-free 2015 sailing season. I encouraged safe boating in the 2016 sailing season. The Flare and Safety Demonstration will be held on 9 April 2016. Skippers Advisory: Thirty two Skippers and guests attended a Skipper's Meeting on January 9, 2016. Skippers' Handbook has been revised. Social: All events for 2016 have music and a caterer/venue identified including the Halloween Party at Miles River Yacht Club and the next Awards Dinner on December 3rd 2016 at the DoubleTree Hotel. The Barn at Sailing Emporium has been reserved for both of our events there this summer.

and See Yourself in Pictures!

The March brunch will feature the SOS Retrospective, a compilation of sailing and touring activities of the club, starring YOU, our

members! Directed by Teeja Meier, the glamour shots are sure to be exciting! The premier will be at the Doubletree Hotel in lovely Annapolis. Red carpet reception will start at 11:00, with a sumptuous brunch to follow. Prepare to meet and greet and “be seen” at the gala event. This is the morning after our always-rewarding Spring Training and Apres ST party, so treat yourself to one of the discounted rooms at the Doubletree and make a weekend of fun and socializing with fellow SOS members. A general membership meeting will follow the retrospective. See the Event Calendar to register by March 8!

SOS Annual Sock Burning

Ceremony - March 20 Join us in our annual tradition with “The Burning of the Socks” and bid the blustery winter season adieu! Celebrate with SOS friends, anticipate future sails, tell tales of past sailing adventures, and share food and drink. Bring those odd or worn out socks and toss them in the fire, the ones that have lost their mates or the ones with worn out heels. Register early as attendance is limited to 30 guests. Bring your favorite sailing stories or songs. If you have questions please contact Suzanne Vaughn at [email protected].

Sailing Season is coming!!!!

We can see it on the horizon……spring! And SOS won’t let you down. There are so many great events planned to get you ready for the sailing season; you won’t want to miss a single one. First, there is the day-long Spring Training event at the Anne Arundel Community College on March 12. All interested skippers and crew are invited to attend the Raft Captain Seminar on March 19. On April 9 is the Flare and Safety Demonstration in the morning with a New Member Dockside Training in the afternoon. When do we get on the water, you may ask….after all of this “training”? Our first Day Sail is scheduled for Sunday, April 9 with the IRS Cruise the following weekend, April 16/17. We finish April with both Saturday and Sunday Day Sails on April 23/24 and the Shakedown Cruise on April 30/May 1. And just a quick plug for the Extended Cruise, planned for May 21-30; going to the Northern Bay from the DNR cruise. Mike Pittinger has a great itinerary outlined, so put this special event on your calendars. Whew! We are so excited about this year’s Cruising Schedule and the fabulous response we have had from willing coordinators! Here’s to a great sailing season and seeing you all out on the water.

Meeps and CJ

Yahoo Sails New This Year

There are 3 "Yahoo sails" on the cruising calendar for Skippers to use the Yahoo site to ask for Day Sail crew once they have determined the wind will be good for a sail. There will be no charge to crew. We anticipate that a yahoo request for crew would go out Wed-Fri for the upcoming weekend. Crew who respond should note their skills/experience. 2016 SPRING TRAINING Registration, Schedule and Directions

Saturday, March 12, 2016 Deadline: March 7th for online registration; March 4th postmark for mail-in paper registration

Registration Instructions

Spring Training is both a fun and educational event that includes many new members who are unfamiliar with the "routine.” We ask that all registrants read the instructions below before calling with questions. Cost: $55.00 Member, $75.00 Nonmember and all after deadline (see below). Included in the cost is a $5.00 non-refundable fee in the event that Spring Training is cancelled for any reason, including weather. See snow emergency instructions on page 9. Please note that classes are filled on a first-come first-served basis, so don’t delay registering! Online registrations cannot be modified, so register carefully. Registration for specific classes is limited. SOS reserves the right to adjust the class schedule to meet demand for key classes. Upon arrival, check in at the registration desk and pick up your class materials. Please be prompt and courteous; speakers are volunteers as are all the administrative staff. Anne Arundel Community College is a non-smoking and alcohol-free campus, including the parking lot. Please do not smoke or consume alcoholic beverages anywhere. Morning coffee and a buffet lunch are included in the cost of registration. Please note, however, that no food or drink is allowed outside the cafeteria.

To register online: • We encourage online registration. Go to the website, www.singlesonsailboats.org, and you will find a

section for Spring Training. You will see something similar to the paper registration form, also published in the Whisker Pole. Please note that you can only use a credit card online; we cannot process checks online. If you do not wish to use a credit card, you can register by mail with a check. See below.

• Cost: $55.00 Member, $75.00 Nonmember and all after the March 7th deadline. • Choose the courses you would like to attend by clicking on the drop-down menu. If a course you select is

“full,” it will not appear on the menu. This is one of the advantages of registering online. You will know your schedule when you register. Please note, however, that last-minute changes are possible due to circumstances beyond our control, so be sure to check-in at registration for your materials.

Cancellations must be received via phone or e-mail no later than March 7th.

To register by mail: • If you wish to register by mail, fill in the registration form included in this issue of the Whisker Pole. Mail the

completed form together with your check to: SOS Spring Training, PO Box 5708, Annapolis, MD 21403. • Cost: $55.00 Member, $75.00 Nonmember and all after the March 4th deadline. • Fill out all information requested on the form. Please print legibly because your information will be entered

into the Spring Training database. • There are four 90-minute class periods, A-D. Indicate your first, second, and third choices by entering that

course number. DO NOT write in the course name but use only the course number. Use a zero if you do not have a second or third choice, or if you do not wish to attend anything during that session. Entering a zero will not assure you your first choice, however, because classes are assigned in the order of registration.

Example: First Choice Second Choice Third Choice A: 1 A: 2 A: 0 B: 3 B: 2 B: 1 C: 7 C: 2 C: 3

D: 0 D: 0 D: 0

Rafting Seminar for Skippers, FMs, and Crew - Saturday, March 19th

Rafting is an important aspect of SOS cruising and doing it safely is critical. Learn how SOS builds linear and circle rafts including where and how to set an anchor, place fenders, secure lines, approach in the wind, and effectively communicate on the boat and with the Raft Captain. This seminar is designed for Raft Captains, potential Raft Captains, Skippers, First Mates, and all

Crew members. This session covers considerations involved in raft building such as advance planning, general guidelines for all rafts, special considerations for circle and linear rafts, handling emergencies, docking for land-based cruises, and ways in which Skippers and Crew can assist the rafting process. • What are the responsibilities of the Raft Captain and individual Skippers? • How does weather affect raft building? • How do we determine how many anchors to set, and where to set them? • How do we calculate the amount of space needed for a circle or linear raft? • When do we build a linear raft or a circle raft? • How much anchor rode should we use, and why? • What happens when the wind shifts while a raft is being built? • What is the effect of current? Or boat wakes? • How can the size of a raft be adjusted for more or fewer boats? • Is breaking up really hard to do? • What are the emergencies that can occur in a raft, and what should we do?

Flare and Fire Safety Demonstration - Flare

Exchange Saturday April 9th 8 AM to 10 AM.

By John Parsons, Safety Chair The Safety Committee is planning the Flare and Fire Safety Demonstration immediately prior to the New Member Dockside Training. The location for the event is Camp Wabanna at 101 Likes Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037. See directions to Camp Wabanna on Page 17. Following safe use techniques demonstrated by instructors, our member participants will have the opportunity to fire aerial flares, set off hand-held flares, and extinguish a small controlled fire using a fire extinguisher. This is a rare opportunity for hands-on experience for dealing with emergencies. Members will also practice coiling and heaving lines, a skill that is used frequently during the sailing season at raft-ups. There is no charge for this event. Skippers: Safety Committee has some fire extinguishers on hand, but can always use a few more donated fire extinguishers for this event. Safety will be exchanging 12-gauge flares and hand-held flares no more than four years out of date with a new packet of 12-gauge aerial flares or hand-held flares provided by the Club. Older flares have been found to be duds too often. Safety has more need for donated 12-gauge flares than for donated hand-held flares. You may exchange your SOLAS Red Parachute Signal flare no more than four years out of date for a like SOLAS flare for a cost of $25.00. Skippers exchanging flares must email the event coordinator to reserve for exchange of flares.

New Member Dockside Training Saturday April 9th

By Emil Becker, Education Chair Recently joined SOS? Sailing skills rusty? Need a review or refresher of those essential sailing skills or the names of those what-cha-ma-call-its on the boat? SOS has a special day for you and it is a lot of fun!

Dockside Training is an all-day event held after the Flare Demo. Sign up and you will be assigned to an SOS Skipper’s Boat. Come with your lunch and beverages as you would for a Day Sail. AND BRING THOSE QUESTIONS!!! The SOS Skipper and SOS First Mate will acquaint you with the details of SOS sailing; how to sign up for an SOS cruise, what to wear and bring, the names of all that stuff on the boat and what it is used for, and the basics of sailing. You may also learn and practice to tie a knot or two. In short, many things you need to know to participate as SOS crew on a day sail or a weekend cruise.

You will be able to complete most of the Level I checkout requirements during the day. The Basic Skills Program and Check Out sheets (2015) can be found on the SOS website under “Forms and Such”, then “Education”. (You must be logged in to view these.)

And when the sun starts setting and the air gets chilly, you will do what sailors always do; socialize at a local Annapolis watering hole where all the Dockside Training crews and skippers, along with any local members, will gather for food and libation.

The Coordinator will contact you by email or phone regarding your boat/skipper assignment. Note: there may be a limited number of boats for this popular event. Sign up early!
