FESTIVAL SPONSORS

WELCOME TO THE 38th ANNUAL

Peter Anderson FestivalWelcome to Ocean Springs and

to this year’s “festival season” where we showcase the town, our one-of-a-kind shops, restaurants and galleries surrounding the 38th Annual Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival presented by Blue Moon! Artists come from all over the United States and from throughout our Gulf Coast to take part in this exceptional, cultural event. More than 400 artists, crafters and food vendors fill the downtown streets with color, character and quality pieces.

This festival holds a special place for me as it celebrates the arts in honor of master potter Peter Anderson. His shop still creates unique, warm pottery pieces in the heart of downtown to this day. The Anderson family has been a monumental part of our arts community and its growth since the early 1900s from creating an arts colony to inspiring a vibrant arts community and business center in Ocean Springs. We thank the family for their creativity and commitment to this town and to the arts.

The team that makes up this festival from the artists, musicians,

volunteers, organizers, local business owners and beyond all work together to bring this amazing two-day event to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I am honored to be a part of this team and applaud the efforts and communication. I am delighted to see how the team has such a passion for this event and town that this festival seems to be promoted year round all working to help bring growth, revenue, character and life to this community.

I am also grateful for the partnership with Blue Moon and F.E.B. Distributing Company. Together, we have grown this festival and its impact to new levels. The Blue Moon Art Project contest has been a fun addition. It is a state-wide art competition where artists submit their interpretation of blue moon on canvas for a chance to be featured in the coming year’s festival. The winner showcased this year is a coast native, Daniel Gurneck. Be looking for his signature “festival” cups anytime a blue moon is ordered at our local restaurants and bars during this season! I cannot thank the staff

at F.EB. Distributing enough for their artful partnership.

Please take the time to familiarize yourself with this guide as it is a great way to locate some favorite stops throughout the festival. The information page will help you locate the park n’ ride venues, live entertainment and where you can purchase a festival t-shirt. Also, take time to stop by any of our four entrance information booths. Our teams will be waiting to greet you and help you find anything special at the festival or in town.

Thank you for taking the time to be a part of this special event and season, “festival season” in Ocean Springs. On behalf of our local shops, restaurants, galleries, artists, city government and chamber of commerce, let me say, “welcome” and “thank you” for sharing your time with us!

RICHARD LORENZ PAINTS WITH TECHNOLOGY

STORY BY KELSEY SUNDERMAN

Digital painting is a technique that has become increasingly popular as technology has advanced. Lorenz’s artwork is virtually created, from his beginning sketches until the final brush stroke. To create his images, he uses a digital Wacom tablet and a digital painting program called Corel Painter. As a

virtual paint brush, he employs the use of a stylus. “Digital painting uses the latest painting software to translate physical properties of traditional painting into a virtual

representation of the painting process,” said Lorenz. “However, unlike photography, digital painting will never replace traditional oil and acrylic painting. These traditional painting mediums enjoy a large place next to their more contemporary digital companions. “The digital painting category is simply a

new painting medium. And, like it or not, it is here to stay. Digital painting as a category should represent virtual paintings akin to paintings executed with traditional painting mediums.” According to Lorenz, digital painting is another medium for artists to explore. “Most digital painters I know have extraordinary abilities and

talents in many of the traditional fields of painting, and have digital painting as a new medium to the arsenal of tools available to them.” Lorenz’s work focuses heavily on

Richard Lorenz and his wife T’Louise Willis are the embodiment of the term power couple. These two incredibly talented artists from Louisiana came together to create one studio: Silent Echoes. While Willis specializes in photography and inspirational writing, Lorenz focuses on digital painting. Lorenz was born in Germany, but currently resides in Louisiana. He is completely self-taught in the art of digital painting.

representations of birds. “In the realm of all things symbolic, birds and feathers have held a certain fascination for me,” he said, “My earliest drawings as a toddler were of birds and flying. Indeed, I drew every kind of bird imaginable. I consumed the works of Audubon and other notable ornithologists both past and present.” Lorenz is inspired by birds as a symbol of freedom and liberation. “Feathers have a long and illustrious history, beginning with the earliest of civilizations,” Lorenz continued. “In Egypt for example, the feather represented the word truth.” Lorenz is well-known for his series ‘U-BIRDZ,’ which features whimsical bird-like characters.

ZAPP® ONLINE SYSTEM BRINGS NEW ARTISTS TO

FESTIVAL

www.ZAPPlication.org

This year for the second time, an online artist directory was used to help with the process of securing talented, juried vendors for the Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival. ZAPP® enables individual artists to apply online to multiple art shows through one central website, ZAPPlication.org. The online application process also allows artists to directly upload digital images of their artwork for jury review. The result is that all artwork in the system is in a consistent, high-quality, digital format. The digital images are presented to the jurors of each show and the system allows them to score online. In 2001, the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF) convened several meetings with representatives of the National Association of Independent Artists (NAIA) and several major art shows to discuss the feasibility of developing a web-based system that would enable artists to apply to art fairs, festivals and shows online. In March 2004, WESTAF began the development of an online application system, for the U.S. The system was branded as ZAPP®, the universal online arts application. The site allows festival exposure to 70,000 artists from around the United States.

STORY BY SUSAN RUDDIMAN

of Smyrna, Ga., was trying his best to fend off the dampness and keep his art dry during a rainy, cool and breezy Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival when he was presented the Best of Show in 2015, courtesy of Blue Moon. “You could have knocked me over with a feather,” Flack said. “Here I was sitting in miserable weather, and they give me this huge plaque.” He took home a cash prize and a plaque with a Shearwater tile, a gift from his first visit to Ocean Springs and participation in the festival. Flack, 65, is an American folk artist in the emerging Who Ha Da-Da movement. His 2-D mixed media paintings are made of water-soluble graphite on stained Venetian plaster with airbrush and acrylic. The fact his contemporary, colorful and edgy

art received the Best of Show award is an excellent example why the Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival is part of the new art experience, Flack said. People are no longer shopping for the perfect painting to hang over the dining room table — instead art has taken on a more personal form of expression. “People are now spending a majority of their time looking on their laptops or smart phones and around 68 percent of what they are looking at contains pictures of some type,”Flack said. “People are experiencing art in a different manner. If they get a tattoo, they are putting art on their bodies.” “The Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival allows for people to find art that appeals to them plus meet the characters who created the art,” he said. “You will find a wider variety of art at this festival than you will find anywhere else.”

• Peter Anderson Legacy Award –

ANITA AND MICKIE HUGHES OF LAFAYETTE, LA., for their

functional and creative pottery pieces. “There are so many potters at this show and awesome people. My daughter, Mickie, was in tears over receiving the legacy award,” Anita Hughes said. The mother-daughter duo creates pottery and teaches classes at their studio. Their motto is “We are the place where art and function collide.”

• Mississippi Press Award of Excellence –

ANDREA “ANDI” WILKES- JONES OF COVINGTON, LA., for her

vintage jewelry made with buttons. Wilkes-Jones has been taking her unique jewelry – called The Brass Button and Chained Mail – on the road for around 30 years. The 2015 Peter Anderson festival had its challenges because of the rain, especially when she opened her double size booth on Sunday and found one side collapsed. All she had was a roll of paper towels to dry off everything. “I was ready to throw in the proverbial paper towel,” she said. The award has rejuvenated her creative efforts.

• Award for the Creative Arts –

RICHARD “RICK” LORENZ OF BELL VISTA, ARK., for his U-Birdz

digital paintings. “I’ve received awards from all over the country, and this was one of the nicest,” Lorenz said. A native of Louisiana he now lives in the Ozarks. He loves coming to the Peter Anderson festival because “the people are more hospitable no matter if it’s raining, humid or windy – they are happy to be there.”

• Booth Award –

CATHERINE ANN “CAT” DAVIS OF STARKVILLE, MISS., for her Hi Y’all Made in the South booth display. Davis gives the credit for her Booth Award to her husband, Parker Davis, because he puts in the hard work to set up her booth. “Ocean Springs is such a fun town. You can tell people in the community really appreciate art, and the work the artist does,” she said.

EACH CREATION TELLS ITS OWN STORY AND HAS SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE BEHIND IT

STORY BY KELSEY SUNDERMAN

M&K’s Bells of Hope are as inspirational as they are beautiful. After seeing so many commercials about child hunger, Kaylin wanted to do something to help. As a result, the two designed their Bells of Hope collection. “We donate a portion of each sale to Heifer

International USA to provide education and upstart funding for impoverished families in the Mississippi Delta to start family farms,” said Sarah. “This program helps the whole family by providing access to fresh produce and a career stream for the future.”

Recycled silver-plated silverware is combined with a freshwater pearl and sterling silver to make their a one-of-a-kind pieces. Another exciting piece by M&K is called the Wishes necklace, and is inspired by Sarah and Kaylin’s love of dandelions. “We’ve always loved them,” said Sarah. “We call them ‘blowies.’ We can hardly pass a field full without stopping to blow on them and make wishes.” The Wishes necklaces are created from a hand-blown glass ball filled with dandelion seeds on a 30-inch sterling silver chain. According to M&K, “this necklace is a little piece of childhood!”

Meet Sarah Lee, one of the artists behind M&K House handmade, vintage-style artisan jewelry in Monroe, Louisiana. She and her daughter Kaylin Lee make up the mother/daughter duo that specializes in creations made from recycled elements. Many of their works are sourced from metal components such as crosses, bells and lockets. Each of their creations tells its own story and has special significance behind it, such as a meaningful constellation or a customized message in morse code.

The two recently expanded their shop to include handmade blankets made from reclaimed materials. Their blankets are made from recycled saris, which are cloth or silk garments that are typically worn by women in South Asian cultures. Due to the origin of their materials, the blankets come together to form a unique and colorful masterpiece. Each blanket is embellished with a quote and packaged in a special sari bag. “We are truly a team,” said Sarah, “working and creating together, building our lives one day at a time while having the most fun along the way.”

30 PETER ANDERSON FESTIVAL GUIDE | 2016

It’s easy to see the creative spirit in Ocean Springs; it’s around every corner and flows through the community from special events to art galleries to businesses. The city’s festivals help focus attention on creativity and bring thousands of visitors to town. The festival season kicks off with Art Walk on Labor Day weekend. In October the welcome mat is rolled out for masses of classic car enthusiasts with Cruisin’ the Coast — the country’s largest block party. Business owners find creative ways to offer these visitors outstanding shopping. The biggest festival in Mississippi takes

place the first weekend of November with the two-day creative extravaganza that is the Peter Anderson Arts and Crafts Festival presented by Blue Moon. It brings more than 100,000 visitors to Ocean Springs who enjoy the shops, restaurants and galleries along with the juried festival vendors. There are also harvest and Halloween displays in the downtown area followed by a wonderful Christmas season of activities for all ages before Spring rolls around with the Spring Arts Festival. Throughout the year there are changing art exhibits at the Walter Anderson Museum

of Art, the Pink Rooster Gallery, the Art House, the Mary C. O’Keefe Art Center and at other local shops. Everywhere you look in Ocean Springs there’s inspiration, from the statue of two children riding on a tricycle in front of Miner’s Toy Store to the artwork hung inside the downtown Hancock Bank building to the murals at the foot of the Ocean Springs-Biloxi bridge. People in the community also use their creative side to inspire. Corey

Christy with the Walter Anderson Museum of Art partners with other young business professionals to create a pop-up pocket park during events throughout the year. “The goal of the pop-up park is to activate unused and often overlooked spaces and events along the Gulf Coast and to engage children and adults in art and music through interactive exhibits and games,” says Christie.

As a way to help young entrepreneurs shine, the Young at Art Market children’s exhibit will once again be a part of this year ’s Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival.

“We hold this annual event to give aspiring artists the opportunity to learn that art can be their livelihood,” said Corey Christie, marketing and development director with the Walter Anderson Museum of Art.

Students from the ages of 8 to 18 residing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast have been invited to show off their artistic skills alongside some of the top artists in the country. Students will set up booths on the grounds of the Walter Anderson Museum of Art and sell their hand made works to the public.

“We want to foster an artist community that provides ways for young artists to showcase their pieces to the public and what better way to showcase their pieces during the Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival when more than 150,000 individuals will be in town,” said Cynthia Sutton.

The exhibit will be held on Saturday, November 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come shop with our local entrepreneurs.

Volunteers ensure festival runs smoothly

I NEVER REALIZED ALL OF THE WORK IT TAKES TO PUT ON THE FESTIVAL.

STORY BY SUSAN RUDDIMAN No festival this size could ever be executed without its army of volunteers. Putting in hundreds of hours behind the scenes and on-site support, this team makes sure the world is welcomed. From months of preparations to early morning set up, late night trash pick-up and distribution of community and festival information. “We could not put on the festival each year without our volunteers, staff and board of directors,” said Cynthia Dobbs Sutton, executive director of the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce-Main Street-Tourism Bureau. “They are the main reason the festival runs as smoothly as it does year after year.,” she said. The crew of around 100 who reports to the festival headquarters at the L&N Depot brings varied life experiences and backgrounds as well as willingness to be of service. Nikki Skrmetti and Nathan Sumner, M.D., serve on the Chamber’s board of directors and help recruit volunteers though they are volunteers themselves. “The basic requirement I look for is someone who joins our vision to improve the quality of life of those in our community and who are willing to donate their time and talents to help make the Festival a success,” Skrmetti said. Her position as business banker in Jackson County for Hancock Bank makes her volunteer time at the Chamber a good fit.

Page 35: 38th ANNUAL arts & crafts

PETER ANDERSON FESTIVAL GUIDE | 2016 35

IT’S A GREAT TIME OF YEAR

As chief of neurology at Keelser Medical Center, Sumner is the Keesler AFB liaison with the Chamber. He is able to recruit about 25 airmen to help at the festival. “Last year, they were greeters at the entrance on Government Street,” he said. Sumner is at the festival at 4:30 a.m. on the Saturday it opens. “Being behind the scenes as a volunteer is an eye-opener,” he said. “I never realized all the work it takes to put on the festival.” Anna Marie Curtis came to the Chamber of Commerce volunteer team two years ago so she could become involved in the community. She assists the team in numerous areas of planning to on-site coordination. Last year, she took on the overwhelming role as on-site volunteer coordinator where she helped more than 100 volunteers report to their stations and oversaw the vendor welcome. Robert Faulk also came to the Chamber of Commerce two years ago to offer his services. From working closely with the set-up team to assisting vendors and attendees throughout the festival weekend, Faulk has become a man of service winning him the 2015 Volunteer of the Year award. “I’ll be down there by 4 a.m. Saturday to make sure the vendors are where they are supposed to be. I’m retired military and am used to herding folks around,” he said. Working closely with some many vendors, it is a monumental task. Earl Darphin, a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual, is a longtime volunteer at the Chamber. At the Peter Anderson Festival, he said he does whatever they need him to do — from delivering bottles of water to vendors to moving street barriers. “I have family who comes to visit during the festival, so I arrange my volunteer time around family,” he said. “It’s a great time of year.” “We are honored to have a great team of volunteers,” said Sutton. “Our volunteers come out to help with everything from one hour of smiling and welcoming attendees, to eight or so hours of sorting festival guides, passing out vendor welcome bags, solving vendor and logistical concerns, displaying festival signage, making information packets, directing traffic, cleaning and directing.

For years, Shearwater Pottery has been creating limited edition festival mugs each with a different, unique design. Master Potter, James “Jimmy” Anderson designed the first festival mug in 1988.

“People wanted something to commemorate the festival,” said Beth Ashley of Shearwater Pottery. “We are honored to have the festival named after Peter Anderson so this was a way to give back and offer something to those who attend.”

Each mug is designed by James “Jimmy” Anderson with an image or in most recent years, a memory that the Anderson family holds special.

This year’s mug, featured in colorful glazes, portrays Peter Anderson firing in the frit furnace and the year 2016 on the outside of the cup. The cup reads, “The 2016 Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts

Festival mug depicts Peter Anderson working at the frit furnace. A frit furnace melts soluble glaze chemicals together with insoluble chemicals in a crucible from which it drips into water where it shatters and can then be ground to a powder in a pebble mill for use in the mixing of glazes.”

From 2011 to 2015, the mugs were of Shearwater Memories. The memories take a look into the life of the family of the Andersons. The 2015 mug designed by James Anderson in memory of his late brother, Peter Michael Anderson, February 21, 1931 – April 12, 2015. Michael as the family called him was the eldest son of Peter Anderson. He loved fishing, hunting, dancing, family and Shearwater Pottery. He is missed by all of us.

Grinstead Anderson, known as Pat to her family, friends and visitors to Shearwater Pottery. Pat was Peter’s wife and managed Shearwater Pottery for over 30 years. Pat’s natural grace and genuine cheerfulness may have been as good for business as Peter’s wonderful pottery of which she was his most supportive admirer. Pat was also known for love of her church, making the best sandwiches for going out on the boat or on picnics and serving Sunday dinners to the family and guests. Pat died 1973 and is still missed by family, friends, and visitors who still come to the Shearwater Showroom with

treasured memories of her. And, the 2013 mug where the

design recalls Peter Anderson on a Wednesday afternoon bringing wildflowers or fall leaves to the Showroom to perhaps show off his pottery, or maybe just for customers to enjoy the same natural beauty that he did.

Designed specifically for the festival, these commemorative pieces can only be purchased at the Shearwater Pottery booth during the two-day festival on November 5 & 6.

Previous years’ mugs can be viewed at Shearwater Pottery and the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce.

Andrea, or “Andi”, Wilkes-Jones is an accomplished artist from from Covington, Louisiana. Her jewelry business, The Brass Button, offers handcrafted and unique designs, largely centered around antique buttons, vintage cameos and vintage typewriter keys, each incorporate historic elements into contemporary designs. According to Wilkes-Jones, her creations become windows in time that allow admirers to peer into another era. “The motifs used in the button’s design capture the era in which they were created by artisans who crafted these works of art many years ago,” said Wilkes-Jones. Her collection of button jewelry features designs from around the world, some dating as far back as the 1800s. The vintage glass she uses in her designs is of European origin, mainly from Austria, Italy and Czechoslovakia. “We are proud to offer jewelry that we feel far surpasses the current market of costume jewelry in beauty, design and intrinsic value, and recaptures the charm and elegance of the 19th century’s Victorian Era,” the artist said. These renaissance influences can be seen in her creations, and are adapted with a modern twist. As a result, each of her pieces have a unique story

to tell. “I am often quizzed for more information on the pieces I make, so I search and research hundreds of unique and often elusive buttons for their histories,” she said. “I carefully restore each button to its original luster, bringing back to life the story that is within each tiny treasure.” For her brass button jewelry, Wilkes-Jones begins with the button and adds twisted stainless steel wire or chain maille mesh. As a finishing touch to her designs, she embellishes her pieces with bead or pearl accents. The chain maille line, known as Mesh”ing” Around focuses especially on the use of linked chain. Though chain maille was originally used by knights as a form of protection, Wilkes-Jones has artfully taken the material and created her own line of jewelry. “I utilize traditional patterns, as well as invent new patterns and designs,” said Wilkes-Jones. “I use stainless steel jump rings, which are very durable, and when linked together can look extremely feminine when made into delicate designs.” Because of her Renaissance influences and chain maille elements, Wilkes-Jones can often be seen attending festivals around the country with a seven-foot knight by her side.

Ocean Springs is a city known for its soul and artistic flair. From the wonderful museums and craft festivals during the day to the exciting dining options and musical performances in the evening, the city is always filled with excitement. It’s no secret that Ocean Springs is home to some of the best entertainment selections on the Coast. Be sure to check out Government Street, the heart of the Ocean Springs nightlife scene. First up at the corner of Washington and Government is The Office Bar & Lounge. This local hotspot is known not only for its relaxing environment, but for their weekly live music as well. The Office frequently hosts Brandon Green, who has performed as an opening act for Keith Urban and even appeared on “American Idol.” A few doors down from The Office is Mosaic Tapas Bar, a hip international restaurant and bar that provides great food and entertainment. Though Mosaic functions largely as a restaurant during the day, it transforms into a fun and exotic venue at night. With culinary offerings from all around the world, hookahs, a wide selection of draft beers and live music, Mosaic creates the perfect international experience right here in Ocean Springs. Further down the street is Leo’s Wood Fired Pizza, a local pizza joint with gourmet pies, a beautiful courtyard and indoor and outdoor bars that often feature live music and trivia nights. The pizzeria is known for its clean and polished interior featuring black and white photographs of famous actors through the years. Named for its location is The Government Street Grocery, a true local tradition for food, music and spirits. The Grocery, as it is known by the locals, has live

music every Friday and Saturday and is a great way to get to hear music from bands along the Gulf Coast. Aside from their entertainment, The Grocery is known and loved by locals for their Grocery fries, which are thick cut fries smothered in Rotel cheese, chili, jalapenos, sour cream and onions. Next door to The Government Street Grocery is Murky Waters, a barbecue restaurant and bar with a passion for the blues. Their barbecue is dry-rubbed and smoked with local Pecan wood to give it the perfect flavor. Their barbecue plates are perfectly paired with a cold brew and a taste of the blues. The newest restaurant in town, Off the Hook is located in the first block of Government Street off Washington Avenue. They specialize in fresh gulf seafood. Their back patio is situated in the heart of downtown, ideal for an afternoon appetizer while enjoying live music or karoke. Known this time of year as a great place to watch football games is Kwitzky’s Dugout. Often times featuring live music, this establishment is a great place to relax and enjoy the views of downtown. There are many other nightlife venues to visit for great food, drinks and entertainment including Soigne, Salvetti’s Italian Restaurant, Greenhouse on Porter, Val’s, The Shed BBQ and many more. Artfully crafted beer sponsors festival & art contest

“Artfully Crafted” Blue Moon beer is the ideal presenting sponsor for the Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival and has been for six years. “It’s been a wonderful partnership with Blue Moon through F.E.B. Distributing Company, and we’re looking forward to continuing to work with them,” said Cynthia Dobbs Sutton, executive director of the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce-Main Street-Tourism Bureau, sponsors of the Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival. Blue Moon celebrated two decades last year for the brewery founded in 1995 in Denver, Colo., by Keith Villa who created Blue Moon White Belgian-Style Wheat Ale. When F.E.B. Distributing brought the Blue Moon partnership to the Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival years ago, it was a perfect match of creative economy and creative brewing, Sutton said. “Their concept and focus on the community have settled well with the art and economy of Ocean Springs and the Mississippi Gulf Coast,” she added.

THE BLUE MOON ART PROJECT SHOWCASES MISSISSIPPI ARTISTS

“Together we are bringing more light to the arts in Mississippi and the entrepreneurship of our economy.” The Blue Moon art project showcases Mississippi artists and is an important part of the Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival. The winning artwork creatively interprets the Blue Moon brand and is featured on promotional items, signage, billboards and souvenir cups for the following year’s festival. The artist of the winning artwork receives a $2,000 cash prize, and the winner of the People’s Choice award receives $500. Posters of the 2015 winning artwork will be on display throughout the festival this year. Daniel Gurneck of Gulfport took the 2015 top prize with his “The Art of Good Times” featuring sailboats in the Mississippi Sound. The People’s Choice winner is Rod Hedgecock of Ocean Springs for his piece titled “Better with Friends.” Gurneck has been painting as long as he can remember and strives for detail and realism. “I always want to do something challenging and different,” he says. “I like to know that someone besides myself enjoys what I’ve done.” Retired from Stennis Space Center, he can now paint and draw full time, mostly working in acrylic, pencil, charcoal and ink. The deadline for entries for the 2016 contest is October 14 at 3 p.m. Winners will be announced at the festival on Sunday, November 6, at 2 p.m.

The Blue Moon art project is open to any Mississippi resident who is at least 21 years of age. The image is the artist's interpretation of Blue Moon.
