How can Imakemy fuel dollar go further?THE most asked question Cars-guide receives is from ownerswanting to know how to get morebang for the buck they spend at thepetrol pump.

Here are some of the ways thatcan be done:

Compare before you buy. Car ma-kers must reveal the fuel consump-

tion of the cars they make and it’sdisplayed on a sticker on the carswindscreen.

But that consumption is derivedfrom a standard test under strictlycontrolled laboratory conditionsand not real life.

Use it to compare one model toanother. You could expect that the

claimed average consumptionwould be close to real life, but theactual fuel consumption can be af-fected by a myriad of things, someof which you can control, but someyou can’t.

You can also save by planningyour driving route to minimise thenumber of traffic lights

you travel through, and usefreeways, and avoid hills.

When driving use a constantthrottle as much as possible,avoid unnecessary acceler-ations, and anticipate trafficmovements ahead.

Consider converting to LPGor buying a diesel model.

Three years ago vibrations started tooccur when moving off uphill.

The dealer’s solution was to flushthe gearbox and put in new oil. The‘‘fix’’ would last for approximately 10months before the procedure had tobe repeated.

Honda wants me to pay $220 everytime this happens, something thatshould have been taken care of underwarranty.

What should I do now, tackle thedealer, go to Honda Australia, or goto Consumer Affairs?

A: Hopefully you have kept a re-cord of the times the oil has beenchanged and the result. I would takethat to the dealer in the first instanceand present a claim to have thegearbox replaced, as has happenedwith some other Jazz owners.

If that does not get the result youwant, then move up the chain, and ifnecessary go to the Consumer Af-fairs people as the last resort.

Q: I have noted that the speed indi-cated on my GPS differs by as muchas 4km/h from that showing on thespeedo of my car, and it is alwaysless. I have read this is normal.Which one is correct?

A: I can’t say that either one is‘‘correct’’ but the speed shown on theGPS is probably the more accurateone.
