    Coaching and Mentoring

Qualities Developed w ith Help of a Mentor

The greatest satisfaction from a mentoring relationship comes from personalachievement. A mentors principle purpose is to help another develop the qualities

he/she needs to attain goals without a mentor! These qualities arewisdom,

    judgment, resilienceandindependence.Wisdom

Developing wisdom means learning how the system works. Every organization hasrules spoken and unspoken that insiders know.

A mentor can help a mentee become accepted as an integral part of an organization. Bysharing what he/she has learned from experience, a mentor provides an importantperspective by pointing out the imaginary lines one should not cross.

Is it important for the mentor to know the written and unwritten rules of anorganization? Why?

Why would explaining how the system works help a mentee?

What are some of those imaginary lines you should not cross?

What would be the impact of the absence of this quality to the mentoring relationship?

    Judgment

Judgment means understanding the consequences of decisions and actions. Many timespeople make decisions based on how they feel at the moment.

A mentor, with objectivity and perspective, can help a mentee understand the long-termimpact of his or her choices. They can explore the consequences of decisions beforethey are made.

How can a mentor help a mentee make the best decisions?

What would be the impact of the absence of this quality to the mentoring relationship?

    Resil ience

Resilience is learning from mistakes and coming back with renewed confidence, strengthand determination. Over time everyone hits a brick wall, that obstacle which causesthings to unravel.

A mentor becomes a sounding board, a support system, giving advice when asked. Bysharing stories of his/her mistakes, the mentor helps the mentee recognize the road toachievement rarely comes without challenges or even failures.

Why is it important that a mentor help the mentee work through mistakes?

    What can a mentor do?

What would be the impact of the absence of this quality to the mentoring relationship?

    Independence

Independence occurs when one is ready to accept increasing challenges and reasonablerisks.

By pointing out the mentees achievements, a mentor supports efforts to become self-reliant. Getting out of the way involves granting another the right not to take advice notto do it the mentors way because all mentoring relationships end at some point.

    How would you define independence?

When does a mentor know the mentee is ready to accept more challenges?

When does a mentoring relationship end?

What would be the impact of the absence of this quality to the mentoring relationship?
