39TH ANNUAL FIESTA WEEKEND: Our 39th annual parish community is in full swing. The final segment of our three-day
Fiesta is this Sunday afternoon from 1pm to 8pm. This 39th annual parish Fiesta is again an opportunity for bringing our entire parish
and school families and surrounding neighborhood together in community. Our Fiesta event creates a very informal and friendly
environment to celebrate friendships and especially the gift of our faith and its call to experience the joy of the Gospel and in the
Lord, Jesus. The Fiesta Raffle will be the big highlight of Sunday evening’s segment. Our deepest gratitude to RJ Saavedra, her
family, and all on the core committee of the Fiesta and all who contributed hours of service in the presentation of this 39th annual
Fiesta. Our deepest gratitude to all of you and to all who participated and supported this year’s Fiesta.
OCTOBER… RESPECT LIFE MONTH, THE GIFT OF LIFE AND CREATION: Each year, for several years now, the
American Bishops have designated October as Respect Life Month, during which we are to reflect on our attitudes toward the gi ft of
life in all its seasons. The Biblical account of creation in the first chapters of the Book of Genesis, makes it clear that God entrusted
the gift of life and creation - our common home - to us for the good and well-being of all people. We are stewards, trustees of these
precious gifts, including first and foremost, the gift of life itself. Our basic attitude should be one of overwhelming grat itude and
reverence to our God for this most precious gift.
Consistent Ethic of Life: The following is the mission statement of our Parish Consistent Ethic of Life Committee: To
invite and promote a charitable dialogue regarding a consistent ethic of life within the Our Mother of Sorrows Community and
beyond. To address all life issues by articulating the authentic teaching of the Church and advocating for the sacredness and dignity
of life in all its forms. To do so with the reconciling spirit of humility, openness and prayer.
Our gratitude to the members of the Consistent Ethic of Life Committee who serve faithfully on this very important Parish
committee. Our Catholic Consistent Ethic of Life proclaims that life, from conception to natural death, life in all its seasons is sacred,
is God’s gift and is to be respected and reverenced from the womb to the tomb.
Respect Life Message: Bishop Kicanas recently wrote “The Church’s teaching on the dignity and respect due to all human
life from conception to natural death is a core teaching of the Church. Regretfully, many of our people do not understand why the
Church speaks out on issues like abortion, immigration, capital punishment and other issues that reflect on the dignity of al l human
life.”
THIS WEDNESDAY EVE - OCTOBER 4TH - FEAST OF ST. FRANCIS, BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS: Our annual
blessing of animals on the Feast of St. Francis will take place at 6pm on Wednesday, October 4th, adjacent to the statue of St. Francis
by the southeast entrance to the church. Two-legged creatures come at your own risk.
LIVING AS MISSIONARY DISCIPLES — MORE THAN 100 PARISHIONERS SIGN ON TO GROUP FAITH-SHARING

Scripture Reflection October 1, 2017
Matthew 21:28-32
Jesus confronts religious leaders
Jesus’ parable draws on parents’ experience of how
differently their children act and obey. However, Jesus puts
forward the case of the two children not in a family setting but
in the public space at the center of Israel’s religious practice
and the home turf of the chief priests. He is on the capitol
steps.
The temple is where the people pray, offer their gifts and
sacrifices and pay the temple taxes that support its priests. The
vineyard in Jesus’ parable is God’s vineyard, the people of
Israel its vines, the temple its prime site.
By using a parable, Jesus intentionally deflect the
challenge of the priests and elders to the authority he has
claimed in teaching in the temple and chasing out buyers and
sellers. Jesus wants them to see themselves as the son who
regrets saying no and goes to work. He calls them to practice
the covenant law they preach and represent.
We often wonder about the second son and his answer,
here are some thoughts about the second son that you might
want to ponder… Who knows why the second son says yes but
does no? Maybe he meant to get around to it, but failed to plan
properly. Maybe he forgot. Maybe he was kept from his
commitment by some unforeseen circumstance. Maybe he just
lied to get his dad off his back. Or maybe he was a pleaser with
a deep need to supply the preferred answer. The only right
answer is the one we get behind with heart, soul, and action.
DID YOU KNOW … Often to one side of the altar is the ambo. You’ll find
the Lectionary, the book of Mass readings, here. What
happens here is the focus of the Liturgy of the Word.
END OF LIFE ISSUES: Towards the end of October and early November, Our Mother of Sorrows' Consistent Ethic Of Life
Committee plans to focus on End-of-Life issues. Addressing these issues for Catholics is especially important now, given the
growing acceptance of physician-assisted suicide and related legislation in nearby states. Sessions will be moderated on three
consecutive Sunday afternoons from 1:45pm to 3:15pm at the parish (Session I will be held in the church):
Oct 29th - Session I “Catholic Approach to Death & Dying: Ethical and Spiritual Reflections” Msgr. Jeremiah McCarthy,
Ph.D. (Moderator of the Curia for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson)
Nov. 5th - Session II “Preparing Now for the Hour of Death” Panel discussion with clergy who minister to the dying in
hospitals and question/answer session on end-of-life topics such as: living wills, advance directives, last rites, family
involvement, and the role of spiritual preparation. Panel: Msgr. Jeremiah McCarthy, Deacon Andy Corder, Rev. Gretchen
Steffenson, Msgr. Tom Cahalane
Nov. 12th - Session III “Comfort and Healing for the Dying” Rev. Carolyn Ancell, a certified music practitioner will
share stories from her hospice ministry on how music and sound can comfort the dying and their loved ones
Interested parishioners are encouraged to call the parish office to register for these ninety minute sessions...747-1321.

GIFT BEARERS AT MASS- "Would you honor
the Lord today by being a gift bearer?"
We are all "one body" whether or not we are
involved in some type of parish activity or ministry.
However, there is one time during the Mass that an
individual, when asked, can actively take part in a
beautiful and special moment of honoring our Lord:
Presenting the gifts of bread, wine and stewardship
offerings at the altar on behalf of the whole parish
community.
The honor of being a gift bearer requires no
special skill or permanent ministerial duty, yet, is a
beautiful and significant part of the Mass performed
by lay people.
You may sign up in the Gift Bearer book which,
during the week is kept in the lobby of the parish
office and, during the weekend, behind the last pew
of the main aisle.
"Would you honor the Lord today by being a
gift bearer?"
