Dear Partner,

If Danny Shelton had waited until he had the money to start 3ABN, the first Adventist net-work would still be just a dream, instead of reaching the world in its twenty-ninth year! That same spirit of reaching out in faith continues through your letters of encouragement and sacrificial contributions. Thank you!

Five years ago the world faced the greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression. Most (but not all) of our business friends urged us to cut back, and some ministries laid off as many as 40 percent of their staff! However, Danny, Mollie Steenson, and Brian Hamilton joined me repeatedly to pray for God’s direction. Under His guidance we chose to move boldly forward, and contrary to rumors, our contributions never decreased!

We’ve been very successful in holding down travel expenses

and anything optional, but more money has been required for broadcasting. Instead of cutting back, we’ve added the Proclaim and Dare to Dream channels, started planning a new chil-dren’s channel, and launched Radio 3ABN Latino! We spend far more on our mission and message than ever before, but your faithful support provides just enough. Thank you for your faithfulness!

“Don’t cut back!” you say. “Move forward in faith with the Great Commission, and we’ll move forward with you!” That’s how the Lord answers our prayers.

Keep on Keeping On with Jesus,

“Those who occupy positions of influence and responsibility in the church should be foremost in the work of God. If they move reluctantly, others will not move at all. But their zeal ‘hath provoked very many.’ [2 Corinthians 9:2.] When their light burns brightly, a thousand torches will be kindled at the flame.” Ellen G. White, The Southern Watchman, April 5, 1904.

Thank you for your comments, suggestions, prayers, and financial support as we seek to reach the world for Jesus Christ!

Letters and other materials sent to 3ABN may be used in whole or in part, and edited for content, grammar, and readability, unless otherwise requested.

THANKS!

Have YOU been blessed by 3ABN?Or have you come to know the Lord Jesus Christ by watching or listening? We’d love to know!

“3ABN has been my lifeline for over

25 years, and without you feeding me and instructing me in God’s

Word, I’d still be lost. I’ve learned through my past rebellious ways

that God’s love for me is awesome, amazing, and forgiving. Thank

you! May God richly bless you.”

Moldova [to our 3ABN Russia staff]: “I was so excited to receive more lessons from 3ABN Russia’s New Life Bible study course. I like them very much. Those guides bring people light and truth. Thank you for that course, and for Steps to Christ, a book that I have already begun to read. Also, I am grateful to you for bringing me the light of truth. I will look forward to receiv-ing my next Bible study lesson from your network.”

Watsonville, California: “Watching 3ABN has been a blessing for me. I have learned more about the Bible and know I can share what I’ve learned with others. The cooking programs have also been a good challenge. I now eat more fruits and vegetables than ever before. Thank you, 3ABN staff, for trying so hard to bring us good programming.”

Maryland, via e-mail: “Your pro-gramming has been such a blessing for our elderly homebound relative and the caregiver! No gift we have ever given has been so welcome [as that satellite dish]. Many blessings to your whole staff.”

Michigan: “One day we would like to share with you the extreme makeover God is doing in our minds. We have been labeled vic-tims of mental illness for the last 15 years. We have been on and off so many psychiatric medications that we’ve lost count. Jesus has delivered us from the hellish prison of our minds and has restored us by His Word. We are convinced that Christ has plucked us out of Satan’s hands. We know we are being called to be His witnesses; to light the darkness that so many are trapped in. May God bless you for caring!”

Via e-mail: “3ABN is really doing a good job! It really inspired me to go to church.... I’ve learned a lot from 3ABN, and, as a result, I got baptized a year ago. I’m still keeping the Sabbath with my Jesus, and watching my 3ABN. May God reward His faithful servants—the 3ABN family.”

From a prisoner in Michigan: “Please accept the enclosed dona-tion for use towards your television ministry. We were blessed at this facility to get 3ABN on our limited cable package.... The Holy Spirit ministered to me about keeping His holy Sabbath, and the vari-ous broadcasts answered all my questions in a blessed, timely way. Praise the Lord! Thank you for all your efforts and faithfulness.”

Bronx, New York: “I am writing this letter to show how grateful I am for your television station. What an impact you’ve made on my life. Two years ago the Lord brought me to where I had nothing but Him. In that stage of my life He opened my heart to show me things about Him that as a child I had always wanted to know. Through His Holy Spirit, He led me to His living words in Exodus 20:8 and Deuteronomy 5:12 where He commands us to set aside that day to spend with Him. May God richly bless and keep you all in His presence!”

Jacksonville, Florida: “I don’t have the words to tell you what a blessing you have been to me. I watched your last camp meeting. Excellence! As with all that I watch on your network, I learned some-thing; and in this case, I learned much. It was 3ABN that helped me get right with God and join the Seventh-day Adventist Church in March 2008, after 48 years of procrastinating and stubbornly refusing to do what God wanted. Praise God, and thank you!”

Apopka, Florida: “I want to take this time to write to you and let you know how much 3ABN blesses my soul each day. 3ABN helps me grow and strengthens my faith in the Lord. May the God of Peace continue to bless the work you are doing!”

nile correctional facility in Illinois. Imagine being able to take cutting edge programs about Jesus into places that house so many young people in despair! What an oppor-tunity, and we’re excited about duplicating this around the country.

Over and over again I hear how Dare to Dream’s programming is meeting the needs of people across many cultures. However, we’ve reached a point where we cannot move forward without your sup-port. We need a remote truck to produce programs on location. We need more staff to develop and produce programs. And finally, we need to be on cable television. I

truly believe God will open those doors for us—if we move forward.

So how can you help? Contact your local cable company and ask them to include Dare to Dream in their lineup. Organize a letter campaign with other church mem-bers. Visit our website to discover how you can send your donation securely through your smartphone. Your monthly support gives us new opportunities to reach God’s children with hope and salvation.

Thank you for your prayers on our behalf. We truly rely on them! And thank you for your love and support. Because of you, we can Dare to Dream!

Everywhere I go I hear how Dare to Dream’s programming is meeting the needs of people across many cultures.

Did you know that Dare to Dream produces program-ming that is tailor-made to

the everyday challenges of Chris-tians and non-Christians alike?

Our young people are con-fronted with multiple distrac-tions—from media, their friends, and their music—so we have pro-gramming that’s designed to refo-cus them.

Pure Choices is our program devoted to sexual purity. We’re not afraid to handle delicate issues, because young and old alike are dealing with them.

According to an article in the American Journal of Public Health, the prevalence of tobacco use among urban, inner city African American youth ages 18–24 is alarmingly high. In some cities it’s as high as 60 percent! In keeping with our mission of sharing the gospel and providing tools for living, Dare to Dream recently produced a six-part smoking cessation series, Kickin’ the Habit, hosted by Raginée Edwards.

Moving ForwardOne of our goals is to increase

evangelism in the inner cities. We would like to take a remote truck and televise evangelistic campaigns around the country. We may even come to your church! But we can’t do this without your help.

Nikki Anderson is the administrative assistant for 3ABN Radio.

We’ve been blessed to be there from the beginning with most of these stations. How exciting it all was! I remember when we began organizing our first training school for applicants who wanted to learn how to run an LPFM radio sta-tion. Our first session was held in December 2001, just seven months after the last LPFM filing window in May. It lasted for two and a half days, and we quickly realized that wasn’t nearly enough, so we eventually offered four full days of instruction. It was still a “crash course” on the basics, but it gave us more time to impart necessary information, and a lot more time to grasp it!

Just last month we held an LPFM radio informational meet-ing during our 3ABN Spring Camp Meeting that was well attended! We met and discussed the appli-cation process with many who are interested in exploring this evan-gelism tool to reach their families,

friends, and neighbors. We’re planning more training schools for those who receive a construction permit in the upcoming filing period, too.

If you are seriously considering applying for a construction permit to build a low-power FM radio station this fall, please contact us. We have packets of information available on the type of program-ming 3ABN Radio offers, as well as the services we can provide our affiliates. We’ll be happy to talk with you about getting started, and send you one of these packets to share with others who are inter-ested in being part of this exciting adventure with God!

We’re so blessed to have such an extensive family tree, and we look forward to grafting in many new branches as it continues to grow and bear fruit! Will your new LPFM radio station be joining us soon?

I was up to my eyeballs in mat-ters concerning low-power FM (LPFM) radio station appli-

cations, construction permits, and information packets when I thought, It’s exciting to think about new radio stations spreading the gospel, but we also need to celebrate the current members of the 3ABN Radio family!

Several 3ABN Radio affiliates have already reached, or nearly reached, their ten-year anniversary of being on the air and/or becoming a 3ABN Radio affiliate. Here are the stations we’re blessed to celebrate this milestone with (see tables).

Pastor Robert Costa preaches to the crowds during the 3ABN Latino broad-cast of the “Future With Hope” series in Humacao, Puerto Rico.

Jesus said, “ ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have

commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.”  Matthew 28:19–20.

Bringing people to Jesus Christ is the main goal of so many 3ABN workers and volunteers, and this past April the Lord blessed us with the opportunity to broadcast two evangelistic campaigns—one in Humacao, Puerto Rico, and the other in Ecatepec, Mexico!

stations—one owned by the West Puerto Rico Conference Church in Mayaguez and the other owned by 3ABN in the capital of San Juan—and downlinked live into more than 100 churches on the island!

The Humacao evangelistic series aired live during April 6–13 and was the third such series organized in less than 15 months!

The first series by Pastor Alejan-dro Bullón in March 2012 ended with hundreds of baptisms at a beach in Guanica, Puerto Rico.

The second series by Pastor Jose Vicente Rojas in January 2013 touched the hearts of both young and old, and many more hundreds were baptized.

The third was just held this past April with Pastor Robert Costa, and tens of thousands watched his series entitled, “A Future with Hope.” In a letter expressing his gratitude for the invitation, Pastor Costa writes, “God gave us rich fruits for His glory, and will give us many more as a result of the seeds that were planted in many hearts that are fertile ground.”

Live in MexicoFor our second evangelistic series

in April, we traveled to Mexico with Pastor Andrés Portes, one of the evangelists from the Southwest Region Conference, based in Dal-las, Texas. Pastor Portes is also the

speaker at La Voz del Consolador (The Voice of the Comforter) a television and radio ministry that sponsored the event, along with the Ecatepec Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This event attracted over 1,200 people every night, and over 2,000 the last day! This marked the first time the local churches took such a big step of faith in organizing an event of this magnitude, and rich blessings were received. The series was entitled, “Transformed by His Spirit,” and God used Pastor Portes to preach a message that kept them coming to hear more, night after night.

I’m reminded of the words of Jesus in Luke 15:7, “I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.”

Please remember all those who made decisions to follow Jesus during these evangelistic campaigns!

Live in Puerto Rico From our perspective it seems

as if the leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church on this island have shifted their evangelistic endeavors into high gear since 2010, with events to mobilize both young and old to influence Puerto Ricans and

inspire the world. They’ve passed out literature on the streets and gone door-to-door offering personal Bible studies. They’ve given health semi-nars, marriage seminars, marched in parades, launched Internet evan-gelism, and held local church evan-gelistic events. Then there were the massive public evangelistic series. Broadcast live on 3ABN Latino, these programs also aired on two local church-owned radio stations, two local low-power TV downlink

about the molestation, and was subsequently removed from the only place that he’d ever felt loved. Then he fell into crime, and ended up in jail.

But God doesn’t forget about us! His eye never wavers, and His hand is always there! After a series of providential events, this young man found Jesus and is now a seminary student. He’s passionate about the saving grace of Jesus.

Testimonies like this are what Dare to Dream is all about! We’re currently making arrangements to broadcast in some correctional facilities, and share the gospel of Jesus Christ with those who would not otherwise know Him.

As I think about the terrorist act in Boston, I am aware of the fact that the terrorists are like satan [sic]. He tries to maim and destroy us—anything to keep us from the finish line. But Jesus, our Savior and hero, will bring us to victory through the power of the Holy Spirit, and we can all be winners!

N ot long ago, our country experienced a terror-ist act. On a Monday

morning in Boston, three people were killed and 170 injured by an explosive left at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. That day started just like any other day, but ended in despair, pain, and loss. It was said that the perpetrators’ sole purpose was to maim the victims.

a criminal past. Our God forgives, and wants to prosper us with His Divine Plan for our lives. He doesn’t care about our past. In fact, He can take whatever has happened to us, and whatever we’ve done, and use it to make us better. He lets us know that He has a future for us that is “exceedingly and abundantly more than we can ask or think!”

TRIumPhaNTWe have positive role models of

young men and women that are on fire for God on Dare to Dream Net-work. Many have undergone heavy trials, but have emerged triumphant in Christ, prepared through His Word to meet the challenges that confront them. Recently, on The New Journey program, Pastor Mar-quis Johns interviewed a young man who had suffered a terrible life! As a child, he was unwanted by his parents, grandmother, aunts, and uncles. He bounced around from one foster home to another, hoping to find love and acceptance. When he finally landed in a foster home where the father was kind and giving, he was molested by the

mother! He had to tell his foster father

God doesn’t forget about us! His eye never wavers, and His hand is always there!

As a member of Adven-tist-laymen’s Services and Industries (ASI) organi-

zation, 3ABN has been privileged to broadcast their International Convention for many years. This year’s event will be held August 7–10 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, Florida, where ASI members, supporters, and friends from all over the world will gather to encourage each other and exchange ideas on how to effectively share Christ in their personal and profes-sional interactions.

During this energetic and inspir-ing gathering, networks will be formed and plans will be made that one individual or institution could never accomplish alone. And best of all, friendships will be made that will last for eternity!

This year’s special emphasis, “Prophecy Fulfilled,” will feature ses-sion presentations by C. D. Brooks, Mark Finley, Ty Gibson, Pavel Goia, and ASI president, Frank Fournier. Seminars will cover outreach,

prophecy, health, and other inspi-rational topics with Doug Batchelor, Michael Hasel, John Bradshaw, Lewis Walton, Scott Mayer, and other gifted presenters.

From Every Walk of LifeThis unique and diverse group

of approximately 800 members includes Adventists from every walk of life—business owners, individ-ual professionals, and supporting ministries—and their enthusiasm is contagious!

“The ASI Convention is the high-light of our year,” says Jesse Johnson, president of netAserve.com, a soft-ware training and support company in Fredericktown, Missouri. “My family looks forward to ASI con-ventions each year. They help us stay focused on our mission, and it’s a phenomenal opportunity to stay on track.”

“I come away from ASI awed by the amazing stories I’ve heard of how God is revealing Himself in everyday circumstances, through

everyday people,” says Pat Arra-bito, owner of LLT Productions in Angwin, California. “I walk through the exhibit hall, seeing the things people are doing for God—things I might never have thought of, things unique to the individuals who do them—and I want to add my wid-ow’s mite and my energy to every one of them! It’s a wonderful thing to get a glimpse of God working in ways and places you’d never thought of, or realized!”

“Attending ASI is the most rewarding experience in my life,” says Ray Huang, a technology manager at an alternative energy company. “It’s all about helping

people reach Christ. A couple of years ago, I attended a convention and met Keith Parris who heads up the Satellite Ministry of the Twin Peaks Seventh-day Adventist Church in Louisville, Colorado. With his help I started this ministry within my own church in Denver, and we’ve enabled more than 20 families to watch 3ABN. There are many encouraging stories we’ve heard from people reaching Christ through this ministry.”

Make plans to watch 3ABN’s extensive coverage of this year’s ASI Convention from Orlando, Florida, and prepare to be inspired!

Fireworks Craft

Hi kids! Aren’t fourth of July fireworks exciting? when i was a little girl our family would celebrate independence

day by setting off firecrackers on the hill behind our house. we’d start with sparklers, then the men would set off the bottle rockets, whirligigs, and shooting stars! i’d jump when firecrackers popped, and scream as the bottle rockets screamed back at me. one year, uncle bill lit the last shooting star and it went off at a crazy angle, close to us as we walked down the hill. Suddenly, a flaming ball of shooting sparks shot between Auntie flo’s feet! She screamed, and it was so comical to see a grown woman prancing around as the thing kept spinning around her. it seemed like it had eyes and really was chasing her! uncle bill didn’t know it was a dud, and luckily, no one got hurt. but as much fun as fireworks are, they’re nothing compared to Jesus’ Second Coming! the bible says nothing we can ever imagine will be as good as that! he has really put his whole heart and mind into getting our welcome home party ready for us, and his “fireworks” are just the beginning of it all! Aren’t you excited? i am! let’s make a promise to each other to be there, okay?

i love you so much! Grandma Neal Joyce neal hosts

July 2013 | 3ABN World 19

I t was just another sunny afternoon on the busy streets of Humacao, a city on the southeastern side of the Isla del Encanto (Enchanted Island), as many like to describe Puerto Rico. It was Saturday, August

11, 2007, and what happened that day would impact many lives with sorrow and sadness.

An absurd misunderstanding between Humacao police officer Javier Pagan, and a well-known biker, Miguel Cáceres, would end in the tragic death of a husband and father of a ten-year-old boy. The struggle between the two that ended with Miguel’s death reached a worldwide audience after a bystander recorded the crucial moments in which the police officer unloaded his firearm on his victim, who was already down on the ground. The footage filled the following hours as news outlets and TV networks from all over the island and the world showed the graphic images of the two men fighting, surrounded by a multitude of people who witnessed the events in disbelief.

Revenge! The years that followed this epi-

sode were marked by what seemed like an endless legal battle to serve justice in this complicated case, and meanwhile, another story was developing. Miguel Cáceres, Sr.,

the father of the man killed that afternoon, made a solemn promise to himself. He would not stop until justice was served. He would avenge his son’s death. He would kill Javier Pagan himself when he was released from jail, as he awaited his sentence!

Mr. Cáceres’ world became ever blacker with hatred and sadness. As he thought of how to kill Javier, the stress ate away at his body, but he didn’t care. Finally, as his resentment reached a critical point, his heart gave out on him and he suffered a heart attack that nearly ended his life.

Another SaturdayBut God had a different plan, and

another Saturday afternoon changed his life. While he lay in his hospital bed recovering from his heart attack, a group of ladies from the Las Pie-dras Seventh-day Adventist Church came by to visit and pray with the patients. After their visit, one of them took the time to contact Mr. Cáceres’ family, and later visited them. She also continued to ask God to take the hate and sadness from his heart.

Meanwhile, 3ABN was working

with the Puerto Rican church lead-ers to broadcast a massive evan-gelistic series entitled, “A Future With Hope” with Pastor Robert Costa. 3ABN would soon carry the series live from the very city where this tragedy had occurred, and the

lady who visited the Cáceres family didn’t waste any time in bringing them an invitation to attend.

By God’s grace, Mr. Cáceres accepted her invitation and began attending the meetings. God wanted this man for His own, and by His grace, the Holy Spirit touched his heart and converted him! During one of Pastor Costa’s altar calls, he gave his heart to Jesus and came forward for prayer.

Today, Miguel Cáceres, Sr. is a new man. Although the life of a young man was tragically taken, his father now has a new life in Jesus Christ! He eagerly shares his testimony at prayer meetings or with anyone who will listen, and by the time you receive this maga-zine, Miguel will be baptized as the newest member of the Las Piedras Seventh-day Adventist Church. God has truly transformed his life, bringing him out of darkness into the marvelous light of His love!

As he thought of how to kill Javier, the stress ate away at his body, but he didn’t care.

A Plot to KillA murder plot averted by the Holy Spirit!

Carolina Bonilla is originally from Ecuador and works as a video editor for 3ABN Latino. She attends Southern Illinois University, where she’s pur-suing a Bachelor of Arts degree in TV Production.

I was 18, living in Massachusetts, and my life was full

of problems. I didn’t know where I was going. My little brother was sick. My parents’ separation was very painful. And I was lost.

I had many doubts about God. I’d always believed He existed, but I knew something was miss-ing. There were times I grew tired of religion. Where was the God who could part the seas?

Finally, I got on my knees. “Lord, why is my life so empty? What are Your plans for me? If You want me to serve You, then send me to a place where people call and ask me about You. But please take me out of here! Wherever You send me, I’ll go.”

The Call God didn’t waste any time! The

very next day, on the way to New-port, Rhode Island, I told my best friend how I’d asked God to send me away. Just as I told her this, my sister Teresa called me, very excited.

“Carol! A family who works here at 3ABN is moving to Mexico in three weeks. I’ve already spoken to my boss. Can you send your résumé today?”

I was stunned. “What’s the job description?”

“Well, people call from Latin America, asking for programs and recipes. They also have prayer requests, and some even want Bible studies. Basically, they call asking us about God.”

“Okay, I’ll send it today.” I can’t imagine my expression

at that moment. “Megan, I think God just answered my prayer. If it’s His will, I’ll start a new life in three weeks!”

Arriving home, I asked the Lord again to show me His will. Reaching for my Bible, it opened randomly to Genesis 12. “Now the Lord had said to Abram: ‘Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you…. I will bless you…and you shall be a blessing.’ ”

Suddenly I felt frightened. Are You asking this from me, Lord? You know my parents won’t be happy. I’ll have to leave Mami by herself, and Papi isn’t a Christian; he’ll flip if I tell him I’m leaving school to serve You! But if You really want me to go, please heal my brother, and make my parents supportive.

No Way!I ran downstairs. “Mami, I’m

moving! I’ll be starting work at 3ABN in three weeks.”

She stared at me for a moment. “Well, mi hijita, you’re not a child anymore, and though it breaks my heart, if it’s God’s will, I won’t stop you.”

What?I called my father next. “Aló, Papi!

Guess what? I’ve decided to take a break from school for a year, and serve God full-time. I’m moving to Illinois with my sister in three weeks.”

“That’s wonderful!” he said. “I fully support your decision.”

No way!My last three weeks flew by and I

moved to southern Illinois—a place I’d never imagined God would send me. This was the beginning of my version of Abram’s story—and I love it! I’ve cried so much. At times I’ve wanted to run back to Mami, but God assures me He wants me here, for now. He’s strengthened my faith through visible miracles too numer-ous to write and He also healed my baby brother!

I’ve learned to trust Him, and follow wherever He leads.

To exceed either of these is not as good as having a middle-of-the-road position.

A few minutes after eating a plateful of food, it’s in the blood-stream. The heaviness of the blood and its flow characteristics are deter-mined in large measure by what one eats. It may become heavy because

Questions often arise about vitamin supplements. Some advise taking them, saying there’s been a leaching of basic nutrients from the soil; that commercial production and marketing

involve quick growing of plants; that harvesting before full development has occurred; and that cold storage for distant transportation results in nutrient deterioration. So isn’t it wise to take vitamin supplements to ensure our bodies have a sufficient supply?

I believe that humans fit fairly well into their environment—one especially designed for us by our Creator; and even though our food may not be as nutrient-rich as it once was, it still contains sufficient vitamins and minerals to supply all our needs.

a heavy taxLike all substances that com-

pose body tissues, vitamins have a maximum and a minimum level.

Excessive vitamins or minerals cause an immediate imbalance of the body’s economy of nutrients.

of salts or dissolved proteins; it may become syrupy because of sugar; or it may become frothy and sludgy because of the fats consumed.

These blood changes would always be fatal, were it not for the efficient design of the biochemical mechanisms, buffer systems, storage depots, and other influences that bring blood to its proper physical and chemical status quo within a very short period.

A meal not only has “building up” features, but also taxes and ages the body if it’s so heavy that it exceeds the positive effects. Excessive vitamins or minerals cause an immediate imbalance of the body’s economy of nutrients. For example, calcium and phosphorus maintain a seesaw type of relationship with one another. If one takes a lot of calcium, the phos-phorus goes down, and vice versa; excessive protein requires vitamins A and B12 in multiples of their usual requirement; and too much protein causes excessive loss of calcium.

the stimulus merry-go-round

Physicians constantly hear from those who have begun to feel less energetic as they’ve aged or decreased their physical activity. Someone tells him that a vitamin supplement has made them feel better, and when he tries it, he begins to feel better, too.

Vitamins do stimulate the body’s metabolism, causing a general stim-

ulus feeling somewhat like caffeine. However, this is no recommenda-tion, since it puts a tax on the body, expressed eventually as fatigue, weakness, or unpleasantness. Then he begins to feel down again, partic-ularly if he hasn’t corrected the bad health habit that caused the problem in the first place.

Remembering how much better he felt at first under the stimulus of that vitamin, he now fancies he has a deficiency in some other vitamin or mineral, and pur-chases another supplement on the recommendation of a friend. Once again he feels stimulated, then ill, and the round is repeated again. Soon he’s spending as much on supplements as on food!

Puzzled, he finally seeks medical counsel and is surprised to feel better when the physician tapers him off all vitamin and mineral preparations.

It’s better to let the body be its own biochemist, since it’s impossi-ble to reach a balance through the pharmacologic juggling of nutri-ents that should be obtained from food. Receive all the nutrients your body needs to maintain health and recover from illness by eating gener-ously of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—and sparingly of any other food.

My memories of kimbap are always associated with road trips, picnics, or school,

since my mother often put it in my lunchbox. At first I was embarrassed to bring this popular

Korean dish made of steamed sticky rice, vegeta-bles, and protein rolled in roasted seaweed to school, so I had a veggie burger every day, instead. However, by the time I was in high school I was sick of burgers and asked my mother to just make me normal Korean food. That made her very happy, because it was so much easier, tastier, healthier—and economical! Instead of wrinkled noses, my lunches now attracted many curi-ous eyes. Before long I began asking Mom to make extra, because all my friends wanted to eat it, too!

Kimbap is a finger food that requires no utensils, but you can always use chopsticks! Try dipping kimbap slices in soy sauce with lemon juice and dissolved wasabi paste. It’s so good!

H ere I am, Lord, asking forgiveness. Again. I don’t know why I can’t seem to

overcome this character defect. I’m so tired of trying, I want to just give up! But You won’t let me. I really need some answers. Do You know how hard this is?

Yes, my child, I know. I’ve watched you struggle.

Then, Lord, why do You let me take it back? Why don’t You just keep me from grabbing back old behavior?

(Pause.)Never mind. I know why. It’s

because You love us enough to give us free choice, right?

You’re right.Then tell me something I don’t

know, Lord. What am I doing wrong? I ask forgiveness again and again. I’m afraid You’re very tired of hearing me ask. In fact, some-times I wonder if You’ve tuned me out. I know I sound like I’m whining, but I really don’t want to live this way.

And another thing, the other day I was talking to someone about having You remove the charac-ter defects that keep me from being useful to You. Then he said something that didn’t make sense. He said, ‘Maybe God isn’t ready. Maybe He thinks He can use your defects for some good purpose.’

That’s sounds crazy! You didn’t create me with flaws, and You don’t want me to stay this way, right? Is it

just a matter of Your timing? No (God chuckles). My time was

a long time ago! Then why won’t you take this

from me?I’m trying. Then why does it seem that as

soon as I place something in Your hands, it’s right back in mine?

(Long pause.)My precious child, you come to

Me with your broken toy and beg Me to fix it for you. “Why, oh why, won’t you fix it?” you cry. So I answer you the only way I can: I can’t fix it if you won’t let it go.

(Oh.)

You mean it’s all about me let-ting go?

Yes.So…if I humbly ask You to

remove a character defect and it doesn’t go away, then…there’s either something wrong with my prayer…or something wrong with my willingness…. Is that right?”

Yes.I get it.(Very long pause.)(Deep sigh.)Thank you, Lord. You’re welcome!I love you, Lord.I know. I love you, too!

Stuck!

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ” 1 John 1:9

“My ex-daughter-in-law told me she’d found her best pets at the dog pound, so I pampered him that night and took him the next day. The folks at the pound were very nice, but they carefully explained their policy of putting animals down within a week if no one adopted them—no excep-tions! But I just knew someone would fall in love with him immediately, so I left him there on a Thursday with high hopes.

“The weekend came and went,” he continued. “Monday, Tuesday, still no call from the pound. Early Wednesday morning I phoned and soon I discovered that no one had shown any interest. My heart sunk. This could be the end of Big Boy. So I got on my knees and pleaded with the Lord to find him a good home that very day—a home with at least seven acres, so he could run and play.”

God’s Amazing AnswerAnd now for the heartwarming part. Although Jay didn’t

know it, within a few moments of his prayer, a woman drove past the animal shelter and felt suddenly impressed to go in and look at the dogs. A puppy or two caught Teresa’s eye, but not Big Boy, the fully-grown Doberman/Chow mix. Later she came back with her husband, Ronny Shelton. He wanted a big dog, and as he knelt down, Big Boy ran and practically jumped into his arms, wagging his tail and giving Ronny a lick.

An immediate bond was formed, and just 45 minutes after Jay’s prayer, the Sheltons were calling to ask if Big Boy would be gentle with their grandchildren, ducks, and chickens. They agreed to take Big Boy home for a weekend trial, and the following Monday, Teresa called Jay to ask about Big Boy’s normal diet.

God had answered Jay’s prayer for Big Boy in every detail. He was adopted by a loving family—who live on seven acres!

God multiplied His mercy to Jay, too. We anointed him on February 25, and Jay has been pain-free ever since!

He also gets regular visits with his very special friend, Big Boy.

Jay’s voice sounded weak on the phone. “They said I should go home and wait to die,” he said with

a sigh. “I have a softball-sized tumor in my colon, and it’s cancerous. My age and heart condition make the risk too high for surgery, so the doctor arranged for hospice care, and said I should get my affairs in order. Well, I’ve done that,” he continued, “and I’m ready to go to sleep in Jesus. But I’m in pain, and need prayer.”

This precious man has called me monthly for years. At 89, Jay Dean Howe has no family connections and leads a rather lonely life. He calls 3ABN’s prayer line for various matters, and always phones later to share how God directed him. So what could I say now?

Jay’s Prayer RequestAfter a few words of comfort, he sur-

prised me. “I’d like to share something else before we pray,” he said. “I want to tell you about my dog, Big Boy. He’s been my constant companion for the last four years, and while I’ve had many pets in my life, none were as loving, attentive, and intelligent as him. When my illness caused

me to start staggering and falling, I realized I couldn’t take care of him anymore. So I called everyone I knew, pleading with them to take him, but nobody would.

A Prayer for

Big Boy

“Soon I discovered that no one had shown any interest.

My heart sunk. This could be the end of Big Boy.”

time my husband will become attached to me, because I have born him three sons.” However, she still doesn’t win her husband’s love.

Her fourth son she names, Judah (“Praise”). Notice her focus changes from her problem, to God, as she says, “Now I will praise the Lord” (literally, Yahweh, indicating a strong relationship with Him).

EnvyEach time Leah conceives,

Rachel’s envy grows. “Give me chil-dren or else I die!” she cries. But Jacob answers hotly, “Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”

Soon Rachel repeats Sarah’s mis-take from years ago by giving Jacob her maid. Bilhah bears a son, and Rachel calls him Dan (“Judge”). “God has judged my case,” she says, “and He has also heard my voice and given me a son.” Notice she uses the Hebrew word Elohim for God. This name emphasizes His power, rather than the intimate Yahweh used by Leah. Bilhah bears a second son

Based on Genesis 29 and 30

Laban gives Jacob his two daughters in marriage and follows the ancient custom

of giving each of them a personal assistant from among his maids. But soon it’s clear that Jacob loves Rachel more than Leah, and this bigamous marriage sparks a life-long conflict between the sisters. Even the names of their children reflect their hopes—and rivalry!

Looking for LoveOur merciful Lord sees that Leah

is not loved, so He gives her a son whom she names Reuben (literally, “Behold, a son!”) and cries, “Now therefore, my husband will love me.” She names her second son Simeon (“Heard”), saying, “Because the Lord has heard that I am unloved He has given me this son also.” Her third son she names Levi (“Attached”), saying, “Now this

woes—exponentially!

and Rachel names him Naphtali (“My wrestling”), boasting, “I have wrestled with my sister, and indeed I have prevailed.”

Following a Bad Example After seeing Rebekah’s maid

bearing her children, Leah makes the same mistake and gives her maid to Jacob. Zilpah bears a son, whom Leah names Gad (translated by some from a post-biblical tra-dition as, “a troop”; however, the Septuagint, a better ancient Greek translation, gives it as “Good for-tune”). Leah names Zilpah’s second son Asher (“Happy”), saying, “I am happy, for the daughters will call me blessed.”

During the wheat harvest, Leah’s son, Ruben, finds some mandrakes, whose roots are used by pagans to this day in magic rituals. The ancients believed they would stim-ulate sexual desire and promote fertility, so he brings them to his mother.

Seeing this, Rachel begs for the mandrakes, hoping to remove her

infertility. Leah agrees to give them to her in exchange for a night with Jacob, and as a result she bears Issachar (“Wages”), saying, “God has given me my wages, because I have given my maid to my husband.”

She bears another son, Zebu-lun—(“Habitation”), stating, “Now my husband will dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons.”

However, God remembers Rachel, and she bears Joseph (“He will add”). Triumphantly she pro-claims, “God has taken away my reproach,” and predicts, “The Lord shall add to me another son.” Her reference to God now is “Lord,” indicating she’s finally on more intimate terms with Him.

Although Jacob now has 11 sons and at least one daughter (Dinah), he must live with two concubines and two jealous and unhappy wive s—one who feels unloved, and another who craves more children. He also has a ruthless father-in-law who was constantly trying to take advantage of him. But that’s a story for another day.
