Depth Cues

The depth cues are used to determine the depth relationship between the objects in the scene.

Many depth cues are used by the human visual system to disambiguate the position of objects in a 3D scene.

These cues are divided into two categories - physiological and psychological cues.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is the change in the focal length of the lens of

the eye while it focuses on specific regions of the 3D scene. The

change in the thickness of the lens is due to a change in tension

from the ciliary muscle. The visual system uses the depth cue in

tandem with the convergence.

CONVERGENCE

Convergence is the inward rotation of the eye to converge on the

objects when they move closer to the observer.

BINOCULAR DISPARITY

Binocular disparity is the difference in the images projected on

the left and right eye retina while viewing a 3D scene. It is an

important depth cue used by the visual system to produce the

sensation of depth.

MOTION PARALLAX

This depth cue provides different views of a scene when the

scene or the viewer is moved.

Physiological Cues Psychological Cues

LINEAR PERSPECTIVE

The linear perspective refers to the change in the size of the image

of the object on the retina in inverse proportion to the object's

change in distance. When the object moves away from the

observer, the image becomes smaller. This effect is called

perspective foreshortening.

SHADING AND SHADOWING

The amount of light illuminating a surface is inversely proportional

to the square of the distance from the light source to the surface.

For this reason, the objects that are away from the light source are

darker and this gives cues of both depth and shape. The shadows

cast by one object on the other also gives cues of relative position

and size.

AERIAL PERSPECTIVE

The objects, which are at a distance, tend to be less distinct. Since

blue has a shorter wavelength, it penetrates the atmosphere more

easily than other colors. Due to this, distant objects appear bluish

in color.

Key Industry Drivers/Challenges

The main drivers of 3D imaging have been the

incursion of this technology in multiple segments and

industries and the use of 3D in medical imaging.

The major challenge is that the 3D imaging market is

price sensitive.
