And when available, it is often standardized and monotonous, based on mass-produced elements from factories. The building industry is one of the largest global industries. However, good quality housing is not available or accessible to many people. And when available, it is often standardized and monotonous, based on mass-produced elements from factories. The building sector is also highly polluting, not only in production but also in transportation of building elements. The use of standardized products leads to inefficient transport, many man-hours, and a high level of unfitting discarded materials. DUS believes digitalization provides the solution to these problems and explores this idea with the 3D Print Canal House project: a revolutionary project in which an international, cross-sectoral team of partners works together on 3D printing a full scale canal house in Amsterdam.

The research evolves around 4 ‘R&DO’s’:

The project started in spring 2014, at a temporary building site designed as a growing expo open to the public. In September 2015 the 3D Print Canal House moved to a bigger location and grew from a temporary project to a permanent building project in the North of Amsterdam: the 3D Print Global Flagship Warehouse. This ‘3D Print Canal House 2.0’ will combine office space, workshops, storage, cafés, hotel rooms and more to become a permanent place where design, innovation, sustainability and new building concepts come together. Currently, the building site is a 3000 m2 living lab where all parts of the building chain are exposed on and developed in order to kick-start the revolution.

The research on the 3D Print Canal House will continue commercially in the tech startup Actual. Actual focuses on combining online software tools directly with XL 3D printed output, in order to bring tailor-made building elements directly to the masses.

DUS builds unique tailor made architecture with a global attitude, with a focus on community, design and technological innovation. The company was founded in 2004 by architects Hans Vermeulen, Hedwig Heinsman and Martine de Wit. DUS designs things that make you feel at home in the world – from your favorite coffee mug to the neighborhood that you live in. Recent projects include the re-designing of parts of the piers and gates of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, a public park at the outskirts of Amsterdam and a 3D printed one-off bottle for Chanel. The office has won the prestigious Amsterdam Awards for the Arts 2011 and Sustainable Entrepeneurship Award 2014, and was nominated for ‘best Dutch architecture practice’ in 2012, Dutch Design Award 2014 and New Material Award 2014. To DUS, architecture is a craftsmanship, and all their work has a personal touch. As is shown by their most recent project, the 3D Print Canal House, which was recently viewed by U.S. President Barack Obama and is currently under construction in Amsterdam. The project is a research into how new digital fabrication techniques can lead to new smart housing solutions and affordable tailor-made architecture worldwide.
