WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE A MAKERSPACE?
From New Horizons Report: “One of the most significant aspects of 3D printing for teaching and learning is that it enables more authentic exploration of objects that may not be readily available to schools. While it has become easier for teachers and students to work with these models, some of the most compelling applications of 3D printing in K-12 come from schools and programs that involve students creating something that is all their own.”

PARTICIPATORY LEARNING
oHeightened motivation and new forms of engagement through meaningful play and experimentation;oLearning that feels relevant to students’ identities and interests;oOpportunities for creating using a variety media, tools and practices;oCo-configured expertise where educators & students pool their skills and knowledge and share in the tasks of teaching & learning;oAn integrated system of learning where connections between home, school, community and world are enabled and encouraged

Image and ideas for small lib: http://goo.gl/6BQYrG
“Brian Bannon, who is the Chicago public libraries commissioner, says that maker space is now part of the city's goal to become a major hub for advanced manufacturing over the next couple of decades.”
“According to the American Library Association, about 1 in 6 libraries now dedicates some of its space to maker tools and activities.”
http://goo.gl/Hm8PoI
"Since 2008, when the bubble burst and everything started to fall apart, we've never been busier," says Sue Considine, director of the Fayetteville Free Library. "It has snowballed into this really exciting rebirth
for public libraries in many ways, as places where entrepreneurship and invention and discovery can happen."

ALLENTOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY
“The library is in the learning business, not
just the book business,” said Director Jeff
Krull.
“Allen County collaborated with TekVenture, an educational nonprofit specializing in makerspace technology, to create the lab. Working off a simple one-page agreement, TekVenture agreed to provide the trailer, along with the equipment and some free programming, and Allen County offered free parking.”

KICKING IT OFF
Advice from ThinkLab on a Kick-off:
“We had a 24-hour hackathon where anyone could drop in and play and experiment. We had pizza and candy and demo'd all the tools.
From that experience I would suggest something similar, but perhaps not a 24-hour event. Be sure to print up a bunch of cool examples folks can examine/hold, and little trinkets they can take away with them (eg, keychain with your school's logo). Have a few computers with Thingiverse loaded and show they all the possibilities, and let folks print items start to finish. Be sure to temper their expectations in terms of print times, and keep examples small for quick turnaround. Have other things they can look at, like books/magazines about 3D Printing/MakerSpace/etc. And be sure to give them a fact sheet to take away, with your policies/pricing/hours, etc.”

Everyone is a Maker • Our world is what we make it. • If you can imagine it, you can make it. • If you can’t open it, you don’t own it. • We share what we make, and help each other make what we share • We see ourselves as more than consumers—we are productive; we are creative. • Makers ask, “What can I do with what I know?” • Makers seek out opportunities to learn to do new things, especially through hands-on, DIY (do-it-yourself) interactions. • The divisions between subjects like math and art and science dissolve when you are making things. Making is an interdisciplinary endeavor. • It’s all right if you fail, as long as you use it as an opportunity to learn and to make something better. • We’re not about winners and losers. We’re about everyone making things better.• We help one another do better. Be open, inclusive, encouraging and generous in spirit. • We celebrate other Makers — what they make, how they make it and the enthusiasm and passion that drives them.

Article: http://goo.gl/m3Xmfq Forbes: http://goo.gl/YcPXtF
Anything that can exist in liquid or powder form – in other words, ingredients that can then be extruded through a nozzle or syringe – can be printed. This includes sugar, cheese, sauces, and others. A meal comprising of pizza, an eggplant dish, corn pasta, and panna cotta was recently 3D printed for The New York Times. - Forbes
“This is the kind of potential that I think a lot of people don't understand about 3D printing. By decentralizing the manufacturing process it allows the creation of products anywhere. That's a huge paradigm shift that, once it's better established and more efficient, is going to shake the foundations of industry at many levels.” – Commenter SkipErnst
