What is Printing ?• Printing is a process for reproducing text and images, typically with ink on paper using a print press.

•GUTTENBERG’S PRINTING PRESS.

•INVENTED IN 15TH CENTURY

•USED MOULDS MADE OF BRASS

What is 3D Printing?• For methods of applying a 2-D image on

a 3-D surface

• Additive manufacturing or 3D printing is a process of making a three-dimensional solid object of virtually any shape from a digital mode. 3D printing is achieved using an additive process, where successive layers of material are laid down in different shapes.

Additive Manufacturing

• Creates a product through adding materials to the object

• Adds material layer by layer until printing is finished.

Purpose • Imagine a near future in which a device

connected to your desktop prints a SOLID OBJECT!!!!!!

• We can have tangible goods and intangible services delivered over the INTERNET.

Working Principle• Modeling• Printing• Finishing

Modeling• Additive manufacturing takes virtual blueprints

from Computer Aided Design (CAD) or Animation Modeling Software and "slices" them into digital cross-sections for the machine to successively use as a guideline for printing.

Printing• To perform a print, the machine reads the design

and lays down successive layers of liquid, powder, or sheet material to build the model from a series of cross sections.

• These layers, which correspond to the virtual cross

sections from the CAD model, are joined together or automatically fused to create the final shape.

• The primary advantage of this technique is its ability to create almost any shape or geometric feature.

Finishing• Though the printer-produced

resolution is sufficient for many applications, printing a slightly oversized version of the desired object in standard resolution, and then removing material with a higher-resolution subtractive process can achieve a higher-resolution.

Subtractive

Manufacturing • Creates a product by removing sections from a block of material.

• Generates waste through the excess material that is removed.

Applications• Prototyping• Modeling• Custom parts• Design• Research

Page 13: 3d Printing Technology by Sai Thangella

Sustainability•3D printing generates almost no waste during manufacturing, and does not require lubricants.•3D Printing can be used to create replacement parts.

Success Stories

• 3D printed Jaw

Page 15: 3d Printing Technology by Sai Thangella

• 3D Printed Leg For an Injured Duck at Ramakrishna Math

Page 16: 3d Printing Technology by Sai Thangella

Challenges• Nearly anything can

be printed by 3D Printers and this is a troubling prospect if criminals use 3D Printers to create illegal products.

Page 17: 3d Printing Technology by Sai Thangella

Conclusion• 3D printing is an

expanding technology which may soon start an industry in which everyone has the possibility of being a manufacturer.

• 3D printing has a lot of possible benefits to society, although the products created must be regulated.
