Lent this year begins on Valentine’s Day, February 14. In our culture, Lent is
sometimes reduced to a way of give-up bad eating habits, but in reality, it’s so much more. Lent is a point of resistance, a pivot point where we see the lives of others as having value over ours; it is going against the flow. It’s a way to develop purpose; for preparing the Followers of Christ through prayer, paying back the community, re-pentance of wrongs, giving, reconciling with God, and self-denial. While many com-munities of faith turn Lent into a program, it should be a guiding light to our faith; culminating with our hearts focused on Easter. If we’re truly living in love, perfect love, we should strive to live in the grace, love, resistance, and forgiveness. If we seek only self, and giving up eating chocolate, we miss the point of loving God and loving our neighbor as ourselves, and we miss the point of Lent.
Lent is, or should be, a time when we reflect on how we grow in Love. It should be a time where we rediscover how to stick out in the world in a way that reveals God’s love. We can also learn to discern and resist forces that would move us away from Perfect Love. It is a temptation to live life in a ‘least resistance’ mode, to avoid the challenges that come to us as we live in Christ.
How will you make the journey of this season? Can you join us as we journey with Jesus through the ac-counts of the gospel of John? What neighbors can we reach out to? How will we enter the lives of others with the unique love of God?

FEBRUARY WORSHIP
"Christ has no body on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes
through which Christ's compassion for the world is to look out; yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good; and yours are the hands
with which He is to bless us now."

Theme: Shelter & homelessness
Key scripture: For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45
January leader: Kandi Berner Our January project was to prepare and serve a meal at the Beacon of Hope homeless shelter in Fort Dodge. The meal was prepared during a very busy Sunday School hour on January 14th by Sunday School students, confirmands, high school members, and the help of several parents. We were able to fully fund supplies for the meal from the Sunday School Christmas program offering. The meal will be served on January 29th, see the weekly bulletin for details. If you haven't yet had the opportunity to serve at Beacon, please consider joining us. It's a great experience!
February
Theme: Love
Key scripture: By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:35
February leader: Vicki Roby
In February, we'll be sharing Christ's love with a super fun project called "Love on the Rocks". If you're not aware of this craze, search "love on the rocks" on Facebook. During the Sunday School hour on February 11, Sunday School students and congregation members will have the opportunity to paint messages or images of God's love onto rocks. Then, we'll hide these around the community when the weather warms. If you haven't been part of a Hand's and Feet project yet, this is great time to jump in and get involved, no special art skill necessary!
For questions or more information on how you can work with our Sunday School to be the Hands and Feet of Jesus, contact the monthly leaders, Dawn Murley, or Jamie Ridgely.
The February Bible Study: Sharing thoughts, insights, and even leadership in Bible Study is really a good idea. It’s not just about giving up the familiar, but more so gaining the joy of new direction. Our study for February focuses on meaning as both message and effect . Sometimes we find a story meaningful be-cause of the moral or message the story conveys; other times we appre-ciate how the story affects us emotionally. If you haven’t already: please pick up your 8 Circle Book & Serving Group Handbook from St. Paul’s office or your Circle chairman.
