CompactPCI® PlusIOPICMG 2.30 is a supplement to PICMG 2.0
CompactPCI® PICMG 2.0 PICMG 2.0 gives no electrical specification for user I/O pins on the backplanes – so-called
BP(I/O) signals The HM connector does not support high-speed differential signals like PCI Express® or
SATA CompactPCI® PlusIO PICMG 2.30 extension
CompactPCI® PlusIO PICMG 2.30 extension: PICMG 2.30 adds a standard pin-out for BP(I/O) signals for serial high-speed interconnects PICMG 2.30 introduces a fully compliant high-speed connector which promotes the use of
BP(I/O) pins for high-speed signals without adding additional ground pins

Focus of CompactPCI® PlusIO
®
J2 I/O Pin Assignment
PICMG 2.30 defines the usage of rear I/O pins of the 32-bit CompactPCI®system slots for high-speed serial signals.
This allows interoperability with other CompactPCI® 2.xx standards by PICMG for 3U as well as for 6U cards which do not use these pins.
For these high-speed signals, a new J2 connector is introduced which is designed to be intermateable to backplanes defined in PICMG 2.0. This connector is able to support differential signals up to 5 Gb/s.
10
Focus of CompactPCI® PlusIO
J2 I/O Pin Assignment
®
This means system slot boards with this new high-speed connector can be used in existing systems.
The pin assignment also interoperates with 64-bit backplanes• 32-bit accesses will work, • 64-bit will not work in such an environment,• Serial interconnect is not usable
One main advantage of the combination of legacy PCI and modern serial buses on J2/P2 is to realize hybrid systems.

To improve the bandwidth, chipsets have been extended by serial high-speed interfaces.
Parallel PCI bus will stay for existing I/O, but is limited to 32-bits PICMG 2.30 defines just the system slot extension. For peripheral
boards – depending in the interface – CompactPCI® Plus, CompactPCI® Express or PICMG 2.16 boards can be combined

These point-to-point connections are optimized depending on the connected devices.
• For closely coupled extensions, PCI Express® was introduced to replace the parallel PCI bus.
• For hard drives, SATA or SAS were established.• Slower, not so closely coupled devices are connected by USB• For multiprocessing applications, Ethernet is the most common solution to
connect CPUs.

Interoperability
®
The CompactPCI® PlusIO specification defines the user-defined pins of the 32-bit system slot definition in a way to bring out the serial interconnections on J2 to the backplane.
This definition does not violate the existing standard so that the two are fully interoperable.
The standard J2 (2-mm HM connector) is not able to support differential signals up to PCI Express® generation 2 (5 Gb/s). So the connector used for J2 is improved as well
The backplane connector does not need to be modified A hybrid backplane can be realized by combining a CompactPCI®
system slot together with CompactPCI® Plus and / or CompactPCI® Express peripheral boards.

CompactPCI® PlusIOPin Assignment
PICMG 2.30 is a definition for user I/O pins of PICMG 2.0
The 3MTM Ultra Hard Metric (UHM) Socket Connectors does not consume additional ground pins
In case not all interfaces are used in the described way, pins are still usable for custom I/O
E.g. when just one Ethernet is implemented, the remaining 8 pins may be used for user I/O

Outlook
The 3MTM Ultra Hard Metric (UHM) Socket Connectors, 5-row and 8-row, are available today.
Work is ongoing on a UHM header for further increased system performance with the same design goals and philosophy: to have internal shielding for higher performance and optimum ground connection, but still be foot print compatible to 5+2 HM headers.

Question & Answer Session1. When will PICMG 2.30 be released as final? (Manfred)
2. What is so special about the 3MTM Ultra Hard Metric (UHM) Socket Connector? Is it not just a standard 2mm HM? (Roland)
3. The following sentence does not make sense. If f/z shield configuration for pairs horizontal in rows, is the SI data available? Also, are the horizontal shields configurable or do they have to be loaded in every position? (Roland)
4. What are expected to be the most common applications driven by next generation CompactPCI? (Manfred)
5. Is there a plan to drive the UHM socket connector to even higher speeds like 10 Gbps+ staying on the 2mm footprint? You said something about a UHM header planned? (Roland)
