Blessings in a Backpack Overview • Blessings in a Backpack is a “neighbor-helping-

neighbor” program that is designed to help meet the nutritional needs of children and families.

• Each week, volunteers distribute backpacks filled with non-perishable food for the weekend (six meals) to “at-risk” students.

• While it seems unlikely the children in an affluent county like Oakland would go to bed hungry on weekends, in reality, 14.3% of South Lyon students are at risk. South Lyon has 1,180 children who qualify for this program.

• The goal of the Blessings in a Backpack program is to keep these students from going hungry on the weekends and remove barriers to academic success.

• The South Lyon program is currently serving all 8 elementary schools, both middle schools and are striving to serve both high schools. We serve approximately 275 children.

Benefits of the Program • Research shows that healthy, well-nourished children

learn better, are more likely to attend school and are able to take advantage of educational opportunities.

• This program is making a difference in the lives of children. Results we have seen are:

Sponsor a Backpack • We are able to purchase food at a reduced rate. Your tax

deductible donation of $100 will provide a backpack and food to one child each weekend for an entire school year!
