What can you expect in Third Grade?

Third Grade Third Grade is an exciting year full of growth and change. We hope that you and your child are excited for the next three years here at Wantage Elementary School. We are going to talk a little bit about what your child will be learning next year, our expectations for the incoming third grade students, and some of the fun activities we complete in each subject area.

Language Arts: Students will be continuing the Reader’s and Writer’s workshop. Some of our units include Character Analysis, Informational Reading and writing, A Research Club project ( there will be an expert fair in the springtime to show off their hard work), Mystery Reading, and Adaptive fairy tales. We will have weekly spelling lists, use Flocabulary for Vocab and Word Work, and integrate the use of Scholastic News to practice many different reading and writing skills. There will be four book talk projects assigned during the year, one for each marking period that will be expected to be completed at home.Building a solid reading life is very important and we hope that most students, if not all, have one built into their daily routine. In addition to the reading we do in the classroom, we do expect students to be reading at least 20 minutes a night at home. The independent reading is a majority of our language arts homework.

Social Studies: Some of our units in Social Studies include learning about different types of communities, The government, Explorers, Geography, and Economics. Most of our assignments in Social Studies are project based, with a few quizzes. For example, In economics, Students will have the opportunity to start their own business and budget their money to make sure they do in fact run a successful business.

Math: Students will work on the meaning of multiplication and division. A main goal of third grade math is to commit multiplication facts to memory. A few other topics we cover are fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, area and perimeter. We will continue to use our series Big Ideas Math. We will also use IXL and XtraMath websites to support student learning as third grade is one to one Chromebooks.

Science: During third grade Science we cover units on dinosaurs, fossils, weather, climate, plant and animal life cycles. Most of science is project based with a few quizzes.
