MAP OVERVIEW

In 2014, China’s outward investment reached $113 billion, already the second-largest outbound direct investment country. The U.S. has been the No.1 destination, luring more than $14 billion of investment in last year alone. To seize this great opportunity, a Chinese Innovation and Investment trip was carried out between Aug 1st and 8th, 2015. DFW Excellerator brought the group directly to the center of the investment and innovation conference and made a total travel of 1900 km. During the trip, the group visited Shanghai, Changzhou, Cixi, Hangzhou, and Beijing to explore new market opportunities and work with several funds, universities, and science parks to form the new strategic relationships.

Founded in 2014, National Tech Transfer (Eastern) Center is a regional technology transfer venue jointly promoted by the National Ministry of Science and Technology and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. The official site at Zhangjiang National Innovation Bay Valley will be open to the public in August 2015, focusing on emerging industries, transforming, and upgrading traditional industry sectors to the next level. The core business of the Center is to support international technology transfer and the development of innovation experimental zone. The Center creates an operational system to gather leading practical technology with strong capital and talent supports, and is expected to become a global science and technology innovation hub.

Summary

Create a global science and technology exchange platform with the proper capital and talent supports.

National Tech Transfer (Eastern) Center provides the platform for Excellerator and its member to upload the technology information.

Entity Description The American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, known as the "Voice of

American Business" in China, is the largest and fastest growing American Chamber in the Asia Pacific region. Founded in 1915, AmCham Shanghai was the third American Chamber established outside the United States. Until 2014, Amcham has current memberships in total of 3601 including 1628 corporate members.

Summary

Setup the operation in China through American Chamber of Commerce will be efficient and effective. They have strong connections in southern China.

Entity Description

Changzhou Science and Education Town were founded in 2002. Within an area of five square kilometers, the town is composed of two major areas for education and R & D, respectively. Changzhou University, with more than 78,000 students, and five vocational colleges are located in one side of the town. The other part of the town is made for industry R & D and incubators that offer companies with free initial capital, free facilities, government grant support and interest discount of bank loans.

Summary A month before the trip, DFW Excellerator met with the Changzhou delegation led by Jianxin Chen, Party Secretary of Municipal Commercial Affairs Ministry of Changzhou and Jian Wang, Division Chief of Changzhou International Investment Promotion Center. To better promote the City of Lubbock and Texas Tech University, DFW Excellerator teamed up with ACP Foundation, a local professional association, to have the delegation met with local Chinese investors, discussing the future of foreign investments and how Changzhou can be a part of the conversation. The reunion in August was able to bring the relationships to the next level. DFW Excellerator and the delegation visited Changzhou Science & Education Town and would work collaboratively to develop similar cross-border programs in Changzhou. Potential partnership to build an international science park together.

Entity Description

The GDP of Cixi reached $18 Billion in 2014. The city ranked No.5 amongst the Top 100 Counties for the National Medium to Small Cities’ Comprehensive Strength in 2014. The Cixi Binhai Economics Development Zone has a total planned area of 168 square kilometers with 315 resident enterprises, providing gross value of $4.6 Billion in industrial output in 2014. The city is seeking talents with eagerness and passionate to witness and support the industrial transformation, offering the government grant up to $6.5 million.

Summary In June, DFW Excellerator invited a Cixi delegation of 16 people led by Qibiao Zhang, head Minister of Standing Committee of Municipal Committee and Minister of Organization Ministry of Cixi to Dallas, Texas, visiting the company’s new location next to the Mockingbird Station and learning about the newly acquired projects including Fulhum and EV Tech engines. The two parties also opened up a talent workstation to help Cixi attract talents in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. During the China trip in August, DFW Excellerator and the group were welcomed by Qibiao Zhang and Guoyi Xie, Deputy Mayor of Cixi Head Minister of Standing Committee of Municipal Committee and Minister of Organization, visited Cixi Hi-tech Industrial Park and met with local businesses to discuss ways to leverage local resources. Potential partnership to build an international science park altogether.

Hangzhou Hi-tech Zone (Binjiang District) is composed of three sections. The north section is the innovation source of high technologies and a large incubator for SMEs, while the south and east section cover over 80 sq km with a total population of over 326,000. The GDP of this area produced 69.28 billion RMB ($11.17 billion) and the GDP per capita reached $34,039. There are 37 Fortune 500 companies presence, and with the 83 foreign companies in the development zone, the zone now ranks 5th among 129 National Hi- Tech Zones in China. The industrial clusters include software and service outsourcing, e-commerce, Internet of things, cultural creativity, telecom equipment manufacturer, renewable energy, biomedicine and IC design.

Summary

The companies in the Hi- Tech Industry Development Zone (including Alibaba) are looking to bring more international innovative technological companies to land in the Hangzhou Hi-Tech Zone as potential partners.

4.2 Headway Group Strategic Partnership Opening Ceremony in Hangzhou

Headway Real Estate Group Co., one of the ten famous real estate giants in China, is also one of most trusted brands named by consumers in Zhejiang Province. Headway was founded in 1985, officially moved to Hangzhou in 2000. In 2003, it formally established Hangzhou Headway Real Estate Group Co. After 30 years of development, Headway is a large enterprise with more than 5000 employees.

Headway not only had developed lots of commercial complex such as West plaza, Canal culture square, Metro plaza, Xiasha 16 block, Headway happy city. Headway had got rich experience in the development of the whole system of real estate which covers commercial complexes, office buildings, apartments and residential. So far, Headway has invested more than 15 billion RMB (2.5 billion USD) to developed over 4 million square meters buildings in Hangzhou.

Summary

Headway Group signed the MOU with Texas Tech University to work with their technology transfer and licensing with Headway group.

Entity Description Peking University, as a leader in scientific research and teaching, consists of diverse branches of learning. Their Office of Science and Technology Development (OSTD) are responsible for all activities related to technology development and research commercialization. The Technology Transfer Center (TTC) at OSTD is a business-oriented department that is responsible for transferring research product into the market place. The center is a General Partner in four investment funds that is used specially towards technology incubation and acceleration, with Asset under Management (AUM) totaling to 270 Million RMB 2014.

Summary

Peking University signed the MOU with Texas Tech University to work on technology transfer and licensing. Peking University partner with Excellerator to provide the fund for the technology venture from Texas Tech University.

CITY CARDS Beijing, China

Beijing is not only the cultural and political center of China but is home to over 100 of China's largest companies. Its economy is based on the high-end manufacturing and service sectors. In 2013, it has GDP of $230 billion USD with growth at 10.3%, utilized foreign direct investment of $6.4 billion USD, imports 246 billion USD and exports $55.5 billion USD. The tourism, media and IT industries are particularly prosperous in the Chinese capital. Beijing is where China's market watchdogs and regulators are based. Alongside Shanghai, Beijing attracts multinational companies to base their China or Asia-Pacific headquarters as it is said "If you want market go to Shanghai; if you want connections with the government go to Beijing."

Shanghai, China

Shanghai's gross domestic product (GDP) grew 7.7 percent year on year to $353.9 billion in 2013. It is a clear leader in terms of the quality of its growth – 60.7% of GDP comes from the service sector, while the remaining 39.3% of GDP comes from relatively high end manufacturing of automobiles, electronics, petrochemicals, iron & steel and equipment. Shanghai, located in the Yangtze River Delta in East China, is the commercial and financial center of mainland China, as exemplified by Pudong district, a pilot area for integrated economic reforms. It is a global financial center, and a transport hub with the world's busiest container port.

Changzhou, China Changzhou, nicknamed the Dragon Town, is a prefecture city with a history of 2,500 years. The city, with its jurisdiction, has a population of 4.5 millions and the land mass is 4,375 square kilometers. Changzhou has been recognized for its old “Four Pillar Industries”, including mechanical, electrical manufacture, automobile manufactures and textile. In addition, the city has newly added more industrial sectors to its economy, including high-tech, electronic, biomedical and chemical productions. The industrial contribution to its GDP has reached nearly US $83 billions in 2014 and the share is still going strong. Total 42 international industrial giants of the world top 500 corporations listed on the Fortune have set their offices in Changzhou.

Hangzhou, China Hangzhou is the capital and largest city of Zhejiang Province in Eastern China. It grew to prominence as the southern terminus of the Grand Canal and has been one of the most renowned and prosperous cities in China for much of the last millennium. Major companies such as Motorola, Nokia and Siemens have established R&D centers in the Hangzhou Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone. The Hangzhou Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone positions itself as the "Silicon Valley" of China. The Alibaba Group, the world's largest online B2B portal and China's largest website in terms of market value, is headquartered in the zone.

Cixi, China Cixi City is located on the south of the economic circle of Yangtze River Delta, which is the most promising area for future development. Being the anchor of the Shanghai, Hangzhou and Ningbo Economic Golden Triangle, Roads within the city lead to all directions and there is 1.5-hour drive to Hangzhou, 1-hour drive to Ningbo, and 1.5-hour drive to Shanghai. As the 5th city among the top 100 medium-sized cities in China for being most promising for investment and10th for being the best commercial county-level cities on the Forbes list. The GDP reaches high at $18.5 billion in 2014 and created government revenue of $3.3 billion in the same year, with the financial institutions in the balance of $2.8 billion.
