    Paper Presentation & Poster Presentation

    We are told to remember the idea, not the man, because a man can fail. He can be taught, he can

    be killed and forgotten but, 400 years later, an idea can still change the world. Ive witnessedfirst

    handthe power of ideas, Ive seen people kill in the name of them, and die defending thembut you

    cannot kiss an idea, cannot touch it, or hold itideas do not bleed, they do not feel pain, they do not

    love, they can only be expressed.

    Pioneering the tradition of students symposium in our Institute,

    The Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay

    Welcomes you to participate and attend the 3rd

    NCESS 2011. As we are growing bigger every year,

    this year NCESS as part ofAakaar, Civil Department Fest, we are adding another dimension to

    symposium by conducting Poster Presentation as well.

    Objectives:

    To enable closer interaction between students and Professor of our Institute Students have the opportunity to learn

    How papers and international journals are designed

    How Papers are being presented

    To generate a thinking process among the students and to help them incubate their innovativeideas.

    Call for Papers:

    There are two separate categories UG and PG.

    Dual Degree (DD) Students currently in 10th

    semester are under PG category.

    Rest of DD students are under UG category.

    UG Students are free to present papers on any topic associated with civil engineering.

    The topic can belong to any of the areas:

    Structural Engineering Construction Management and Methods Concrete Technology and Building Materials Transportation Engineering Geotechnical Engineering Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering Environmental Engineering Remote Sensing (GPS)Some of the topics mentioned below are guidelines for UG students in choosing their area

    of interest. The UG students can choose a topic of their own from the themes specified.

    Innovative techniques for water and wastewater management Air pollution monitoring techniques Bio-Diesel -The next generation fuel Environmental Impact Assessment for Industrial Project Innovative design of structures for housing in seismic zone RECYCLED AGGREGATE CONCRETEAN INNOVATIVE CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL Innovative techniques for management of ground water Remote sensing and information systems to study urban sprawl and facilitate urban planning Intelligent transport system in highway tracking Public transport-A solution for managing traffic congestion Green BuildingA solution for climate change Thermal efficiency of concrete Advances in Steel Structures New Materials of construction Health Monitoring of structures GIS in mapping of seismic zones GIS in maintenance of sub-surface supply lines Economics of maintenance of highways in India NOTE: The PG students are supposed to present in the area of their specialization

    only.

    Paper Format:

    The brief abstract of 500 words containing the synopsis of the paper needs to be sent as an

    attachment to the e-mail address mentioned below.

    The abstract must contain the Title of the Paper on top followed by the participant details (Full

    Name, Designation)

    The abstract may contain detailed diagrams and/or equations only if necessary to supplement theabstract.

    The procedure involves sending a synopsis of the paper which is scrutinized thoroughly and short

    listed papers are announced following which the selected participants would be sending their full

    paper based on which judges will categorize them to be eligible for paper presentation or Poster

    Presentation at NCESS 2011.They will be judged on various criteria like presentation skills, quality of

    research, originality etc. Note that the poster presentation is not one of the rounds of the

    symposium but a different competition altogether.

    Paper Submission Deadlines:Submission of Synopsis: 20th Dec [email protected]

    Declaration of shortlisted papers: 15th Jan 2011

    Last date for submission of full papers: 25th Jan 2011

    Declaration of shortlisted students for symposium and poster presentation: 5th Feb 2011

    Last date for sending DD: 12th Feb 2011

    NCESS (Symposium): 5th & 6th March 2011

    Poster Presentation: 6th March 2011

    Prizes & Awards:

    First, second and third position of each category (UG & PG) will be awarded with cash prizes

    and the relevant certificates for Symposium as well as Poster Presentation separately.

    Name of winning students will be put up on Aakaar website and T-shirts of the fest and the

    goodies will also be given to them. Also, all the participants would be awarded participation

    certificates.
