❖RELIGIOUS ED PROGRAM❖

The Sunday school is back to its normal schedule. Three teams of catechists are handling the preparation for Confirma-tion from Grade 2 to Grade 12 according to the Diocesan guidelines. The Youth Ministry is also very much involved in carrying out the comprehensive youth ministry program which is a required component of the diocesan order. Let’s continue to pray for our children and youths. We thank the generous and joyful services of our ever-caring catechists who mold their minds and hearts with the Christian values and prepare them well for the sacraments of First Reconciliation, Con-firmation and First Communion. We im-plore the parents, grandparents, guardi-ans and all parishioners to join hands in encouraging their children to attend the Sunday School and Mass and act as primary catechists and models of living the Christian faith. The Education and Stewardship Commit-tees are trying to provide catechetical materials for the par-ents such as video presentations from the Diocese as part of the required involvement of parents in the religious education of their children.

CONVENT RENOVATION

The first phase of the renovation project in the Convent build-ing is done. Everyone is welcomed to visit and take a look at the newly-installed flooring. The steps of the staircases are also made new including the flooring for the chapel. The re-placement of the old commode bowls in all the restrooms are done too. The Planning & Building committee headed by Joyce Oliveira made the inspection and approval of the finished pro-ject. You would certainly feel happy and proud of the new look.

We are most grateful to the generous steward-ship of everyone thru their monetary offerings. When funds are again available we shall con-

tinue to improve the entire structure so as to maximize its use for pastorally-oriented programs. The Parish Finance Commit-tee is spearheading a fundraising activity that will be launched in March 2018. We hope that all parishioners will join hands in making the “SAVE THE CONVENT” event a successful one.

Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Pastor’s Corner By Rev. Edgar B. Brillantes

First Reading: Jonah 3:1-5, 10 Jonah’s prophetic task was not easy. No wonder he refused it the first time God called. In today’s reading, the Lord’s word comes to Jonah for a second time, this time after the Lord rescued from the belly of the big fiush y having the fish spew Jonah out onto the seashore. Jonah calls the people of Nineveh to repentance based on his personal experience of God’s mercy and opportunity to live a new life in God. God acknowledges the conversion of the Ninevites and God himself repented of the evil that he would have brought upon them.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 This brief passage is Pauls’ advice to the Corinthians about how to live in the interim before Christ comes again in glory. Paul be-lieves that the Second Coming of Christ is imminent, so he conveys his instructions with a sense of urgency. Christians are to live in the knowledge of the Second Coming for this world is passing away. What lasts eternally is God’s grace in the present and active in the Risen Christ, now alive in the hearts of those who believe. When Christians live in this knowledge, then their worldly actions will appear different than those who do not await the Lord.

Gospel: Mark 1:14-20 Jesus proclamation to repent and believe in the Gospel parallels Jonah’s call to the Ninevites to repent. What is unique is Jesus’ proclamations is the preface to his announcement in which he states, “This is the time of fulfillment.” Through our reading of the Gospel according to Mark, we, along with the disciples, will come to know that in Jesus’ very person as the Son of Man who saves is fulfillment of all God’s promises. Without fully knowing this, Simon and Andrew respond to Jesus’ call to come after him and become fish for other followers. James and his brother John are the next to trust in the possibilities of what following Jesus could bring.

Stewardship News & Announcements January 21, 2018

A STEWARDSHIP PRAYER Loving and merciful God, You are the Lord of new beginnings. You sent us Your Son so that we may begin anew and enjoy new life in Your Spir-it. We ask you to bless this new year, to guide and direct our plans, and to show us how to find the resources neces-sary to carry out these plans. Give us the wisdom to take advantage of opportunities we may have to help and serve others, to bring peace to the hearts of those who are troubled, and hope to those who suffer. Help us approach this new year as good stewards of your abundant gifts, with an awareness of your daily presence, and the obedient spirit we need to be your faithful servants. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

New Year Stewardship: Living with Compassion

*From International Catholic Stewardship Council January is traditionally the time for new beginnings, fresh starts. For the Christian steward, the grace of being given another day, or God willing, a whole new year, stirs our deep gratitude. But it also calls us to ask what a “resolution” should really be. Our first resolve should al-ways be to involve ourselves more intimately in the life of Christ, and how better to do that than by embracing Christ’s call to be compassionate? After all, Jesus himself instructed us, “Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate” (Luke 6:36). Clearly, we strive now to live and give compassionately, as we gener-ally understand the term. We try to be kind, considerate and understanding individuals. We share with others. But Jesus’ words challenge us to embrace a compassion that is much deeper, much more radical than our general un-derstanding. The word compassion, at its root, means “to suffer with.” This goes beyond merely writing a check, offering a pray-er or sending a note. Suffering is not a popular notion in our society and we strive to avoid it. But now we hear Christ instructing us to “suffer with” the poor, the vulnera-ble, the powerless, the neglected, the weak. This ongoing discernment and fulfillment of our mission is one of the many things that makes stewardship leadership such a dynamic and sometimes challenging endeavor. Helping people recognize their mission to witness to and make Christ’s love known through their stewardship is a sacred responsibility. As we enter the New Year, let us pray that we may fulfill this mission well and with grace. Happy New Year!

“Each one should give as you have decided in your heart to give.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

Stewardship News & Announcements, contd. January 21, 2018

MAHALO TO GOOD STEWARDS Stewardship is responsible sharing of the gifts of time, talent and treasure that God has be-stowed upon each one of us. This has been manifested by our dear parishioners in various ways:

*CHURCH CLEANERS – Every Saturday a group of men and women parishioners prepare the Church for the weekend cele-brations. They clean the altar and the floor, wipe the pews, arrange the books, flowers and linens, put up the seasonal ban-ners and other tasks. They set up the proper worship environments and make our celebrations dignified and meaningful. We do appreciate them for their dedication and devotion. If you are interested to join, please see Roselani Ramones.

*CHURCH CHOIR – Every Wednesday and Saturday, the choir takes time to rehearse under the baton of Mary Ann Llam-edo. Aside from the adults, children and the youth are being trained cantors. The Sunday worship is made more alive be-cause of their lead in singing praises to God. Please don’t hesitate to share your talent. Come and join the choir. Also as-sisting in the rehearsals and instrumentation are Sr. Clemence Mira, Audrey Peralta, Connie de Santos, Ronnie Palce and the Llamedo family.

*GIFTS OF LOVE ❖Much mahalo to Sio Tuitupou for his regular delivery of freshly picked fruits from his garden to the Rectory refectory. Oth-er parishioners bring and share cooked foods from their kitchen or invite the priests out. Our priests do appreciate such show of care and concern keeping them healthy and happy. ❖Becky Jandoc, the Finance Council chair, donated an office cabinet for use by the Finance Council. ❖Francisca Kovaloff, the Liturgy Committee chair, donated the new candle stand located at the alcove of the Divine Mercy. ❖For the renovation project at the convent, Kalolo Tuihalafatai donated $2000.00. ❖We are most grateful to all dear parishioners who faithfully and steadily supported our Church with their prayers, steward-ship and personal involvement in our parish activities and programs that made the past year 2017 productive and memora-ble for all of us. We look forward to another bright year ahead of us.

*MINISTERS & VOLUNTEERS – Our Parish has been blessed with such responsible stewards who serve and give without counting the cost and we keep praising and thanking God for them.

*Our parish is always open and welcoming any parishioner who wants to volunteer in the councils, committees, ministries, organizations, clubs, prayer groups and donor societies and share your God-given talents and gifts to keep our Church go-ing. You may submit your name at the parish office or contact our pastor. God bless and reward you abundantly.

*TO ALL THE GOOD STEWARDS, OUR SINCERE THANK YOU*

CHARISMATIC PRAYER MEETING A spirited group gathers once a month to render spirit-filled praise and worship to God in hymns, prayers and sharing the Word of God. We pray for God’s healing and liberation from evil spirits in our bodies, mind and soul and in our environment. Come and celebrate our life in

the Spirit as we recognize the miracles He gives us and express our joyful thanksgiving to the Lord. The newly-ordained deacon, Raffy Mendo-za of the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa leads the session accompanied by the witnessing of Kathy Ferreira. The next session will be on Feb-ruary 28, 2018, Wednesday at 7:00pm in the parish hall. We thank the Charismatic Team of Sts. Peter & Paul Church led by Dr. Jorge & Chloe Samaniego who helped us jumpstart the prayer sessions.

NOVENA TO PERPETUAL HELP The novena prayers to Our Mother of Perpetual Help is held regularly every Thursday at 7:00pm in the Church. This is followed by the praying of the holy ro-sary. Come to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many have been helped by her intercession in our various needs thru this popular devotion. This is capped by a potluck fellowship at the parish hall. Come as a family and be blessed.
