REJOICE

Today is “Gaudete Sunday”, which means rejoice! Today the feel of Advent is made lighter with the use of the color rose in place of violet. The season of Advent intensifies for the immediate preparation for the celebration of the Lord. Our first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, a very short book with only 33 verses, in which most of the book is gloomy as he speaks of doom for all evil doers in contrast to the concluding verse which is filled with overflowing joy. As Catholics we are called to be joyful people. The Gospel provides three clues for joy: 1) be a good person, 2) be a person of faith, and 3) treat others with respect and dignity. This third Sunday of Advent shouts to us to be happy, joyful and a smile on our face. With due respect to other faiths, have you ever seen a Muslim joke book or a Fundamentalist Oktoberfest or just can you imagine a Puritan Irish Wake? When you get down to it, joy and humor aren’t found in too many religions with the exception of Judaism and Catholicism. Catholic humor like Jewish humor has irony; joy in the midst of suffering. Do you remember Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof? Once when he is speaking to God, he said: “I know that the poor are blessed, but I wish you wouldn’t bless us quite so much.” As followers of Christ, our joy does not come from just pleasure or fun, because joy and pleasure are not quite the same. Joy is a sign of faith. Our faith enables us to still smile when life is difficult; to maintain our balance; to have a sense of humor. Our joy does not mean everything is perfect, rather it is a celebration of God’s presence now with hope for the future. Brothers and Sisters: May God bless you and those 101 angels continue to watch over you as you take time this week to answer the question; “What are the reasons that I have to be joyful?” I hope your list is very long!

Peace and Blessings,

Deacon Joe Webb

Disciples of Mercy Honored for Ministry to the Vulnerable

CCHS Parishioner, David Tanzola, made the transition from serving on the Parish Pastoral Council to expanding its Social Justice Ministry. While staying involved in many of the parish ministries, he reflected on the social teaching of “Welcoming the

Stranger” when the refugee crisis was at an all-time high. He began organizing panel discussions with refugees and migrants in the Diocese, giving them a voice and an opportunity for Catholics to encounter and accompany these newcomers. He was the first volunteer in the “Walk with Me” Mentorship program, where he was matched with a young refugee boy from Damascus, Syria, who had faced enormous childhood trauma when he was forced to flee his home country with his siblings and his parents. Dave became a father figure to this young man, changing the trajectory of his life by spending time with him every week - offering advice, mentorship and guidance. Dave became a beloved member of the family, guiding them through the many challenges that refugees face. Dave has served as a humble model of what it means to step outside one’s comfort zone and put faith into action through meaningful service, solidarity, accompaniment and bridge-building ~Star Herald, November 19, 2021
