The sun sets over Frank Kitonga’s farm in Machako’s County as Mr. Kitonga explains to Nelson Wafula – an agronomist with International Partnership Services East Africa Ltd. (IPSEA) – how the organic fertilizer ‘Fertiplus™ 4-3-3’ has improved his cabbage operation.

“My yields have improved significantly, I used to get cabbage heads that weighed 3kgs, and now most of them reach 5kgs! My production costs have fallen tremendously too: almost by KSH 15,000, especially on manure costs. I’m on a mission to use this [Fertiplus] with all of my crops, on all of my 15 acres of land.”

Like Mr. Kitonga, many Kenyan farmers and their horticultural operations have benefited from the application of Fertiplus 4-3-3 in their acres of land. Since the introduction of Fertiplus 4-3-3 in Kenya in June 2018, more than 120 demonstration sites have been established in 23 counties. IPSEA, Fertiplus’s distributor, expects to reach 100,000 farmers in Kenya by the end of 2018.

Fertiplus 4-3-3’s promotion in Kenya, and the demonstration sites established so far, have been made possible in part thanks to the product’s close collaboration with the Dutch not-for profit organization: SNV (The Netherlands Development Organisation). SNV supports Fertiplus 4-3-3 as part of its Kenya Market-led Horticulture Programme (HortIMPACT), which is financed by The Netherlands Embassy in Kenya.

Answering Kenyan Farmers’ Soil Degradation ProblemSoil degradation on horticulture farms is a key concern for the Kenyan cultivator. This issue often causes increasingly lower yields and crop deficiencies, and is often exacerbated by the constant use of synthetic fertilizers.
