Darryn Wright, Music Director

PROGRAMME PART I

Fanfare and Flourishes — Based on Te Deum by Marc-Antoine

Charpentier (1634-1704) and written by James Curnow, Fanfare and Flourishes was originally commissioned for the 1991 European Brass Band Championships in Rotterdam, Holland. Subsequently the piece was re-commissioned as a concert band arrangement for the Alfred M. Barbe High School Band (Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA) in 1995.

O Mio Babbino Caro — “Oh My Beloved Father” is from the

1918 opera Gianni Schicchi with music by Giacomo Puccini and libretto by Giovacchino Forzano. Sung by Lauretta after tensions between her father and the family of the boy she loves (Rinuccio) have reached a breaking point that threatens to separate her from Rinuccio. Today’s arrangement was adapted for concert band by Darryn Wright, and will be sung by Kate Amos.

The Laughing Song — From Act two of Johann Strauss II’s

operatta Die Fledermaus (The Bat) with libretto by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée which premièred in April 1874 in Vienna. In the operetta, Adele has run into her mistress‘ husband who belives that he recognises her, but Adele convinces him that a chambermaid would never be found at a party such as this one. Today’s arrangement has been adapted for concert band by Darryn Wright and will be sung by Kate Amos.

Andrew Lloyd Webber: A Symphonic Portrait — Andrew Lloyd Webber has been one of

the more influential composers in the genre of musical theatre over the past 30 years. This medley of Webber’s music by Jerry Nowak includes pieces from Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and Cats. Today’s performance will be conducted by Evgeny Chebykin.

Meet Our Guest Artist

Kate Amos recently recently completed her Bachelor of Music

(Performance) Honours at the University of Melbourne under the tutelage of Rosamund Illing. She also holds a Diploma in Italian. Kate is currently undertaking a Masters of Opera at Melbourne University in conjunction with Victorian Opera as one of their Developing Young Artists. Kate will perform in a premiere production of La Traviata in May, the first opera for the 2014 VO season followed by Hansel and Gretel in July.

Kate frequently sings a wide range of musical styles and markets herself as a versatile artist with repertoire encompassing opera, operetta and musical theatre. Kate’s performance credits include VO’s Noye’s Fludde and Snowqueen, leading roles in: Sweeney Todd, GSOV’s The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeomen of the Guard, The Mikado and Lyric Opera’s The Red Apple. In 2013 Kate played the leading role of ‘Christine’ in The Phantom of the Opera with Windmill Theatre Company for 15 consecutive performances, receiving significant critical acclaim.

Numerous awards include: AME ‘Opera Scholar of the Year’, E & L Jullyan Academic Excellence scholarship, Sleath Lowrey scholarship. Kate studied opera at the Fondazione Spontini Pergolesi in Italy last year after winning a scholarship through the Italian Acclaim Awards. Meet our Music Directors

Darryn Wright has been a member of Southern

Area Concert Band since 1998, originally joining the band as an alto saxophone player. After ten years as the President of the band, he moved into the role of Music Director at the end of 2006 following Craig Seymour’s retirement.

Darryn has been playing music (keyboard) since the age of five, studied flute in high school under the tutorage of Gerard Van Der Geer, and has been

playing saxophone for nearly 20 years.

Darryn has performed in many instrumental and choral ensembles throughout Melbourne, has been involved with many amateur and school musical stage productions, and is on the executive of the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association.

Originally from Russia, Evgeny Chebykin joined

SACB in late 2011 as a French horn player after moving to Australia from London. His musical studies were at the Royal Academy of Music during which time he was awarded many prizes including the Dennis Brain horn prize. Prior to his time at RAM, Evgeny was a student at the prestigious Purcell School of Music.

As an accomplished horn soloist, Evgeny has performed concerti by Mozart, Strauss and Bainbridge and has performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta as well as many television and movie credits including the sound track for the last two Harry Potter movies. Closer to home, Evgeny last year performed in Wagner’s Ring Cycle in Melbourne with for Opera Australia.

Evgeny has held the position of assistant conductor for the Concert Band since the beginning of 2012, and took on the role of Training Band Conductor in January 2013.

Voi Che Sepete — From act two of

Mozart’s 1786 comic opera Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), the Italian libretto was written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. In the opera, Cherubino has an adolescent crush on the countess, who also happens to be his godmother. The song tells of a young boy struggling to deal with powerful, unfamiliar and uncontrollable emotions. Today’s arrangement has been adapted for concert band by Darryn Wright and will be sung by Kate Amos.

Rat Race — Have you ever had a day in which you ran from place

to place and accomplished nothing? David Weirich’s Rat Race is a witty and cleverly scored musical expose that highlights this human condition. Unusual sounds, such as bending pitches on a flute head joint and alto saxophone played with only the neck, help capture the sometimes futile and often frantic nature of modern life. This chart has been donated by band member Andrew Gower.

I Dreamed a Dream — From the musical Les

Misérables, set in the first act and with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, the song is a lament, sung by the anguished character Fantine, who has just been fired from her job and thrown onto the streets. Today’s arrangement is by Michael Brown, and will be sung by Kate Amos.

Reflections on an English Hymn — Based on the English

hymn Jerusalem, this poignant song is given a lush new treatment by composer Carl Strommen.

Vilja — From the 1905 operetta The Merry Widow by the Austro-

Hungarian composer Franz Lehár. The librettists Viktor Léon and Leo Stein based the story on an 1861 comedy play, L'attaché d'ambassade (The Embassy Attaché) by Henri Meilhac. At her own party, Hanna tells the story of a mountain sprite, or a “Vilja”, that roams the highlands of her homeland and innocently traps hunters with her beauty. Today’s arrangement is adapted for concert band by Darryn Wright and sung by Kate Amos.

Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again — From Andrew

Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical The Phantom of the Opera which was based on the 1910 Gaston Leroux novel of the same name (Le Fantôme de l'Opéra). Today’s arrangement has been adapted for concert band by Darryn Wright and will be sung by Kate Amos, who played the lead role of Christine Daae in Windmill Theatre’s 2013 production of The Phantom of the Opera.

Ave Maria — Franz Schubert penned Ellens dritter Gesang in 1825

as part of his Opus 52, a setting of seven songs from Walter Scott’s popular epic poem, The Lady of the Lake, losely translated to German. It has become one of Schubert’s most popular works under the title of Ave Maria. Today’s arrangement is by American arranger and composer Frank Ticheli and will be sung by Kate Amos

INTERVAL There will be a twenty minute interval so please join us for a cuppa and a chat.

PART II

Overture to Orpheus in the Underworld — First performed

in 1858, Orpheus is an opera bouffon with music by Jaques Offenbach. The work is said to be the first classical full-length operetta and was not only longer, but more musically adventurous than any of Offenbach’s earlier pieces. The operetta is an irreverent parody and scathing satire on Gluck and his Orfeo ed Euridice and culminates in the risqué Galop Infernal that shocked some in the audience at the premiere and is widely, but erroneously, referred to by a different name. Today’s arrangement is by Lawrence Odom and the music was donated by band member Linda Pesudovs.

Summertime — Originally composed by George Gershwin with

lyrics by DuBose Heyward for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess, Summertime is recognised as being one of the most covered songs in the history of recorded music with over 33,000 recorded performances. Although now often regarded as a jazz standard, today’s arrangement by Darryn Wright is true to the original operatic version and will be sung by Kate Amos.

I Could Have Danced All Night — With music by Frederick

Loewe and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, this piece is from the 1956 hit musical My Fair Lady. The song is sung by the heroine, Eliza Doolittle, expressing her exhilaration and excitement after an impromptu dance with her tutor Henry Higgins. First performed by Julie Andrews in the original Broadway production, in the 1964 film adaptation the song was sung by Marni Nixon dubbing the singing voice of Audrey Hepburn. Today’s adaptation for voice and concert band is by Darryn Wright, and will be sung by Kate Amos.

You’ll Never Walk Alone — Written for the second act of the

1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel, the character Nettie Fowler sings You’ll Never Walk Alone to comfort and encourage Julie when her husband kills himself to avoid capture during a failed robbery. Around 1963 the song was adopted by Liverpool Football Club as their official club song. Today’s arrangement has been adapted for concert band by Darryn Wright and will be sung by Kate Amos.

Poor Wand’ring One — From Gilbert and Sullivan’s 1879 comic

opera Pirates of Penzance and is sung by Mabel to Frederic in Act one. Today’s arrangement is by Geoffrey Brand, features Alex Burke on solo clarinet and will be conducted by Evgeny Chebykin.

Till There Was You — Written by Meredith Willson for his 1957

musical The Music Man. Sung by librarian Marian Paroo to Professor Harold Hill (a travelling salesman) at the end of act two, the song was released in 1963 by The Beatles. Today’s arrangement has been adapted for concert band by Darryn Wright and will be sung by Kate Amos.

I Am Australian — Written in 1987 by Bruce Woodley of The

Seekers and Dobe Newton of The Bushwackers, I Am Australian is arguably a suitable alternative for Australia’s National Anthem and was used by Telstra in 2003 as the backing music for a noational advertising campaign. Today’s arrangement is by George Brodbeck and will be sung by Kate Amos. Please feel free to join in!
